Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

I have a Mac mini late 2012 i7 with Intel HD4000 graphics. I've had the same kernel panics since installing 10.10.3 over 10.10.2. Multiple reinstalls haven't helped. I notice that running Little Snitch increases the frequency of the crashes from 1/ 36 hrs to 1/ 2-3 hours, and the swap file grows to 2-3 gb. But the panics still occur after removing LS. Very frustrating.

Hello Peoples,

Are any of you running flash or have installed flash at any time if so you need to remove it and never use it again or you will have this problem over and over again.

I to have had this problem of random rebooting since 10.10.3 as for the problem of the patchy screen i still have not worked out what is causing that as yet but will keep looking.

I will add i am not a technichian or a computer expert, I only found that this method worked for me.

As for watching videos on you tube use the html 5 extensions in your safari preference add an extension called click to flash 3.1.6.

To rid your self of the flash program its self follow the uninstall flash from the adobe webpage. Hope this helps you guys too.

I have tied my graphics card to 'discrete', using the nVidia GPU these days. I didn't have any more crashes from this point forward. I have been using my MacBookPro for weeks if not months now like this. Maybe this is a hint...

Switched back to intel graphics card last night... Guess what: Two crashes, in a row, when it started rebooting again all out of a sudden a minute ago. Now I'm back to nVidia. If it's never gonna crash again from this point forward then I'm pretty sure where Apple should focus on debugging... 😉

Hello, Thanks to this thread and you all I understood what was happening to me when switching from mac mini late 2009 to late 2012 (2,6GHz quad i7, 16Go ram and two SSDs), installing 10.10.5 and restoring all my apps and data. I experienced like you kernal panics I never had nor new about before.

I stopped asking me 1000 questions when reading that (very long) thread. So I switched back to 10.10.2 which works fine, except that trimforce does not work, so no trimm for my SSD, but I prefer that rather then crashes ! Just waiting for a valid OS that no more crashes (and hope not waiting too long !).

There is no way of knowing if Apple addressed this problem in El Capitan. It seems to hit those users with the Intel 4000 graphics, but not others. I've minimized it by completely uninstalling Little Snitch, but that's not the whole issue. Very frustrating.

This problem disappeared for me, so I haven't checked on this thread much, but I figured I'd give an update and let y'all know what worked for me.

After experiencing this issue daily, I bought a new rMBP for work and have been using my 2012 MBP for basic internet surfing, downloading media, etc. I still host all of my files on it for Dropbox purposes to be accessible everywhere (1tb drive) and do use it daily for a couple of hours. I am a developer so I use my laptop a lot. Keeping in mind that I went from using it 10 hours a day to 2 should be noted.

After having the logic board, RAM, and display replaced through AppleCare, I have to say - the issue did mostly resolve itself. I'd have still artifacts now and again, but only 1 kernal panic in 2 months.

After 2 months however, I began having issues described in this video:

indicating a bad RAM slot.

I took it back in to Apple and they replaced the logic board and RAM again and tightened the display (a lot, it's tighter than even my new MBP. I have no idea if this could matter). Since then, not one artifact or kernal panic at all and it's been almost 3 months now.

I know there is a ton of evidence that this is a software issue, but I think it might be more complex than that. I don't know what combination of having a new logic board/display/RAM + heavily tightened display + updates in 10.10.4/10.10.5 may have resolved this issue for me, but I went form a nightmare machine to not a single problem and I never once did a reinstall of my software. Same hard drive, same system files.

Without AppleCare it would not be worth it to replicate, but just wanted to share my experience.

Hope El Capitan sorts this out for everyone, as I know how frustrating it is.

However, I found that there are common GPUs from Macs that will run El Capitan, but may not support Metal because they lack OpenGL 4.3 support.

Nvidia GeForce 8000-, 9000-, 100-, and 300-series GPUs (common between 2007 and 2010).

Another update (see included image)!

After using the settings "Reduced Transparency" and disabling "Font Smoothing" I had no more crashes in OS X 10.10.5. So that worked.

I installed OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan") today to test. The new video interface should fix the crashes. I did not do a clean install on purpose, to test (for everyone!) if this fixes the Yosemite video issue.

After 12 hours, there hasn't been a crash yet.

I turned the transparency back on, including font smoothing - no crashes.

I checked the new specifications, and here's what I found (more below the image):

Using the maximum amount of memory (16GB) for this computer and possibly all systems using the Intel Core iX processors with onboard Intel HD Graphics 4000, OS X 10.11 allocates a considerably larger amount of memory for the GPU. An additional 80MB per 1GB of memory above the original 256MB. That is more than 50% more than the allocation under 10.10.

I'm not using a secondary display at the moment, but will test that soon.

I am so frustrated with Apple...

They made their so-called stress tests on my MBP, kept it for 5 days and did not replace a thing. The guys handing the machine back to me are total noobs and don't understand nor care about my problem. On the phone they keep telling me to bring it in. Warranty expires next week. It feels like Apple is shouting at me to buy another brand computer...

FWIW, ever since I turned off transparency, my late 2012 Mac Mini has been pretty solid. I haven't seen a kernel panic or any flickering bars in almost two weeks. I have yet to upgrade to Yosemite. I've otherwise made no other major changes to my setup.

Try OS El Capitan. I have no problem so far.

The IOS X 10.11 allocates a considerably larger amount of memory for the GPU.

The also resolve problems with permissions. Actually "Verify Permissions" and "Repair Permissions" are gone.

I'm very very disappointed. The flicker is back in El Capitan!!!!!
