iTunes with Windows 10 install error

I'm trying to install iTunes 12.2.1 64bit on a new Windows 10 installation and I'm getting the following error:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,type="win32",version="8.0.50727.6195",publickKeyToken="1fc8 b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="amd64". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80073715

Any ideas?

There is no current equivalent to the "for older video cards" releases.

The message "An error occurred during installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT, type="win32", version="8.0.50727.6195", publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorArchitrcture=..." may occur because a particular library file is not included in the distribution package supplied with iTunes or won't install for some unspecified reason. Installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update before attempting to reinstall iTunes may help.

There are three files to choose from so you need to select the one that matches the processor architecture of your system, which should be noted in the error message.

  • vcredist_x86.EXE - 32-bit systems
  • vcredist_IA64.EXE - Itanium processors
  • vcredist_x64.EXE - other 64-bit systems

See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for further assistance if required.

Thank you for your reply. However, I found that this problem has been resolved in an Apple forum. I have used this method to install iTunes on two older PCs - one is 4 years old and the other is 8 years old - both of which would not install iTunes using the Apple Software Update tool which would install the latest version - a prior version needs to be installed first! OP, try installing this version iTunes 12.2.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) then when going into itunes it will tell you there is an update available click yes to install it and it should update fine.

I can confirm i was having excact same problem and this is how i was able to get the latest version of itunes installed and working.

This link above now loads "Download iTunes 12.4.3 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards)" which is an oler version and then allows the latest to be install!!!

See iOS device not showing in iTunes for Windows. Separate mechanisms are used to show a device in iTunes, and in Windows Explorer. For the device to show in Windows Explorer it must have at least one image in the Camera Roll, and with iOS 10, it must be unlocked before it is connected to USB. If it won't show in iTunes the driver needs reassigning.

If a backup fails to complete then reboot both computer and device then try again. If it still fails move the existing backup to a new path so that a new one can be created in its place. See Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support.

I have an iPhone 5s and an iPad Mini. The problems are as follows:

1. Neither now show up in Windows Explorer and consequently they cannot be backed up manually.

2. Only the iPhone could be backed up via iTunes. The iPad Mini FINALLY connected to iTunes and started a backup BUT never finished it. Therefore, it cannot be restored.

3. Looking at the Apple and Windows Stores there was no easy, FREE backup solution to these problems.

4. Previously contacting three levels of Apple Support they could not solve the problem of even installing iTunes to Windows 10. However, a Google search found the answer on an Apple forum.

5. I am retired. I spent most of each of the last 10 days to get this to work. I cannot afford to do this anymore!

6. Steve Jobs died and with him did the vision of Apple. Apple only has a small portion of the market. But without the Microsoft / Windows portion Apple cannot remain profitable in the long run. Without Steve Jobs, Apple has lost its way!!!

7. I need a 15.4" screen at my age of 74. I cannot afford to pay three times the amount that an i7 PC W10 costs versus and Apple MacPro!!!

8. Without being able to easily and quickly transfer and or backup my data from iProducts to my Windows devices I will no longer buy iProducts!!!

Goodbye Apple and good luck,

Here is what worked for me. I have Windows 10, which I had to reset recently, after which I was not able to reinstall iTunes. I tried several 64-bit installers, all to no avail - every time the same error 0x80073715. So after hours of trying, I called Microsoft. They first observed that I had 6 versions of Visual Studio C++ Redistributable package - each in both 32-bit and 64-bit form. They told me to uninstall all of those, then reinstall only the 64-bit versions, starting from 2010 (then 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017). One of those packages forced a reboot, but most didn't.

And after that, iTunes6464Setup.exe worked like a charm.

So it looks like a conflict between 32- and 64-bit versions of the Visual Studio C++. If you have a 64-bit machine, only keep the 64-bit version, at least long enough to install iTunes.

I am having the same problem launching the app in Windows 10. I was finally able to start it in "Safe Mode" by holding down the Shift and Control keys while launching iTunes. I was then asked by Windows10 if I wanted to allow that program to make changes to my computer and I responded "Yes". iTunes finally launched and I was able to connect to the iTunes store and sync my phone. I haven't tried to rip a CD yet, but that's next up on my list.

The weird thing is that in Safe Mode I don't think it's supposed to connect to devices or to the internet to get to the iTunes store, but all of that worked just fine. It's an inconvenience until a fix is found, but ctrl+shift+launch is working for now.

No where in the iTunes documentation that I have found does Apple claim that iTunes is compatible with Windows 10. If you read the forum here, you will also find a number of people that have Mac computers that are also reporting problems with Bootcamp and Windows 10. I'm believing you may need to wait until Apple announces that their software is compatible with the latest version of Windows.

I tried to do a new install in Windows 10 and I couldn't even get an error message. All it did was spin that little blue circle a few times and then acted like nothing happened. I was finally able to launch iTunes by using Safe Mode (ctrl+shift held down while launching). That worked and I'm able to run the full version - sync the phone, connected to iTunes store, etc. That'll work until the system gets fixed.

Now I'm off to holler at Microsoft.
