My iPhone 6s home button is really hot and the device won't turn on

i have had my phone since Friday, and this morning when I woke up the home button was burning hot and the screen is just black. I went to bed with it working just fine last night, plugged it in to charge, and now it won't work. Nothing else is hot, not even the charging port, just the home button is on fire. I have had the phone unplugged for an hour and the button is still on fire. I had just made the choice to switch from a Samsung to this iPhone and need to say it makes me slightly regret my choice because I have always known that apple products have tons of issues. I an not happy that I have had this phone for less than 5 days and this is happening. Anyways, is there anything i can do to fix it without having to go into the apple storeI did not finish setting up my iCloud, so to lose all of information because of a defective phone will not make me happy.

Just had the same problem on 6s 64gb. Phone was working fine all day. Went to use the phone and it wouldn't power up, just a dark screen, and a very hot home button. I called Apple Support. They ran remote diagnostics and found nothing wrong. At their suggestion I held down the power button and the home button and the phone powered back on normally after about 10 seconds. I thought it might be an overheat due to the new case, but in researching overheat situations I saw that a triangular symbol should have popped up as a warning. The phone itself didn't feel hot, just the home button.

This just happened to me and I've had my iPhone 6s Plus 64 Gb since launch day. I woke up and wondered why my alarm didn't go off. I then discovered that my screen was blank and my Touch ID button was really hot. I held the power and home button to get it back on. I had to do a google search and came to find this thread. I have the Samsung chip btw. Apple is gonna have a lot of issues with warranty replacements if this is related to the specific chip in the phone. Now I don't trust my alarm to wake me up in the mornings

"is Apple hiding posts regarding people getting burned from the hot home button?"

I wouldn't doubt it. Doing so will likely prevent the post from appearing in the google search result pages for "burn" related searches and thus help reduce negative publicity. See the "Apple Support Communities Use Agreement" #5 in the list - Apple reserves the right to edit or do whatever they want with these posts.

This isn't to say Apple is trying to sweep this under the rug forever - I would hope not anyway. Maybe they want to minimize exposure until they figure out a PR friendly response to this issue. It's just business, I would probably do the same thing.

I also have a 6s that turned off - very possible that the battery just ran out, I hadn't touched it in a number of hours. What is interesting is that I let my iPhone charge overnight and it didn't actually charge more than ~12%. I was using the plug and cable that came with the phone which worked fine with my wife's iPhone, so I know the charger isn't the issue. I only saw it got that much juice after I finally found out that holding the power button and home button for 10 seconds turns the device back on and AFTER I sat on the phone with my cell provider for an hour to get a replacement iPhone sent to me. All morning until I got the phone back on the home button was warm but it was far from hot, maybe because my battery was so low... It is charging again per normal but I think I'm still gonna have it replaced.

I wanted to add myself to this list:

Woke up this morning with the 6S 64GB 9.0.2 not coming on and the home button extremely hot. Tried different charging cords and still same issue. Finally read in this forum to reset the phone. Phone has been working for the last 45 minutes after reset. On chat with Apple now, trying to get them to tell me what the next step should be. Gave them a link to this forum... waiting to see what they say next.

It's not your charger... I've got all apple accessories and see the same issue.

It's happened twice to me in the past week and the phone is working (I can see that the Apple watch still can place a call, etc). BUT the phone's screen can't be turned on, the buttons don't respond and the only way to get out is soft reset via <power> + <hot touch ID> for 10 sec.

Have folks seen this happen without the Apple watch I presume?

I've got mine (6S 64G gold) going back for "repair."

I'm just chiming in here in case Apple data mines this to link to my case. I guess I'm glad that it's documented and sad to see that there are more people seeing this - let's hope Apple can get to the root and hopefully deploy a SW fix for this, or new chips / sensors are being slipstreamed into the production lines. If we want traction on the issue, my advice would be for everyone to report this to support to have the issue start costing Apple money; I'm a big fan of Apple but all businesses address issues based on a risk / reward calculation and if this is an unsolved issue, it'll only get attention when it's impactful.

I'll report back after a few weeks of using the replacement phone...

same happened to me just this morning. I was using my phone, wasn't charging, then put the phone next to my bed then went for a shower. Got dressed and went back to the phone and phone's screen was dark and home button wasn't responsive.

I thought the battery was drained so I pluggged it into the charger.

A few minutes later, I went back to check the phone again and the home button piece was burning hot....

looked up google and found this thread and followed what some of you guys did to hard boot the phone (lock + home button hold for 10 seconds) . I had to use a pen to hold down the home button cos the touch id ring was just so hot...

Hi all, the issue would still come up for me even during the day while it was not charging and it didn't just happen once.

I did take my iPhone 6s Plus to the Apple Store. I told them about my issue and like some other people who have contacted Apple, he hasn't heard of that particular issue. I told him that there was a thread on the discussion forum but he kinda brushed it off and continued fiddling with my iPhone. Anyway, he did do a button test with this pen tool where he would press down on it and there was a real issue with my home button but he said that he's not sure if it was related to the hot button issue.

Anyway, long story short, I was able to get a replacement iPhone but I had to wait because they did not have my phone in stock at the store. I do have AppleCare Plus (I usually get it).

I did not restore my data and set up the phone as new and I have not had any issues since.

I am curious to see if the 9.1 that was just released today made any difference to those who are still experiencing the hot button on their iPhone.

I am back from the Apple Store. I went there after phone Iphone 6S locked up with a black screen and the home button go too hot to touch . The phone was reset and seems to work OK now. I had called Apple and was told I could be helped at the local Apple store. First, although the Apple phone technician said I had an appointment, I did not have an appointment. It appears that no one can get an appointment (even Apple itself) at any Apple store within 50 miles of Sarasota, FL. So, I elect to wait for about 1 hour as a walk in. The Apple greeter seem to think this was a good deal for me as the normal wait is much longer. Judge for yourself. Once the technician had my phone she ran some diagnostics over the WiFi. I asked why I had to drive 10 miles and wait an hour for something that could be done remotely but did not get an answer. The diagnostics indicated that my phone had not experienced a "dangerous temperature". Tell that to my sore thumb. I am sure that the CPU has at least one temperature sensor within to prevent over heading. If the temperature gets too hot it will automatically lower the clock rate (performance). This is standard practice for CMOS microprocessors. However, I have been unable to find if there are any other temperature sensors on the phone. Clearly there is none on the home button which was burning hot. In the end the technician described what happened as an "isolated incident" and logged it as such. She also said that it was not a "software issue" and that if it happened again I may qualify for a replacement. My option is this is a design flaw in at least four ways. First, the home button can get very very hot. Second, there is no sensor in the phone that detects this overheated condition. Third, the problem cannot be fixed with a software or firmware update. Fourth, Apple has no clue what causes the problem. Of course Apple could prove me wrong by acknowledging the problem and issuing a fix but that would be a good thing. I hope they do. I also hope that the hire more help so it is possible to get an appointment at the store. Customer service is important and it was a struggle to get any.

Both My husband and I have to same phone - purchased at the same time....My phone has had issues from day 1 - his phone - none - This hot home button and phone turning off and turning back on - is the latest issue and holding the home and power key worked but this issue needs to be addressed by Apple because it is very strange and there should be a reason for it occurring.

One of your phones was defective. One wasn't. As soon as phone starts having hardware issues, you need to take it to Apple.

this just happened to me right now and happened to my friend last time.. what i did to my friend is that i placed it near the ac so it wouldnt be hot anymore and stopped charging for a while then she turned the power on it worked. she went to apple and all they said was that she had too much photos. and now it happened to me i woke up then the home button was really hot so i removed the charger then i placed it under the blanket cause i shouldnt use the ac while taking a bath so after taking a bath it still wouldnt work so i tried using the ac too then while reading the comments here. so after like 2 mins? i checked it out it wasnt hot anymore so i turned it on it worked..

i recommend you all to put it near the ac and make it cool for a while🙂
