Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

well... I have been looking into this matter.

I found this repair guide on ifixit

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replace+the+LOGO+Baffle+on+the+screen+with+the+MacB ook+Pro+15+%22Touch+Bar+2017+logo/96767

The part itself is very inexpensive and from what it seems, the original part is as well glued in place. All in all making the entire screen replacement a very embarrassing thing.

Looks like they are fixing some and making others pay.

I guess it is who you talk to at the apple store or on the phone.

The senior advisor told me that his hands were tied because there isn't enough people with the issue to prove it is a hardware fault.

Been back and forth with them for months. I am about to give up on apple after years of loyalty. There has been way to many recent issues with Apple that just argues to the point that they just dont care.

My wife has the exact same problem. She is so super sensitive about her macbook pro, that she can't even stand to have finger prints or dust on her screen. I bought it for her as a birthday gift. The first issue happened not even a month after getting it. The battery stopped working and wouldn't hold a charge. Thankfully, they replaced the mac. Why even bring this up? Because, after doing some searching, it seems to me that Apple still has lots of design and quality issues and they are just ignoring them.

Her screen cracked at about the 11th month point. It felt a little like the crack was poking out and not in and so I took it to the Genius Bar. They told me that this was caused by closing the lid on something, that it wasn't covered and it would cost $680 to fix it. I told them that this was NOT caused by the lid closing on something as I know my wife is almost OCD with her macbook pro. I did not pay to have it replaced and it has now been almost a year later.

As a test engineer, I have looked at the crack to see what might have caused it. I noticed that if I close the lid and pick up the macbook pro by the hinge side, palm underneath and thumb on top, that I could feel the lid flex under my thumb. My hypothesis is that this might be enough pressure to crack the screen. It also seems to me that if these cracks everyone is experiencing was caused by closing the lid on something, then why does the crack always seem to be in the same location and not more random locations?

I can't believe that after all this time and all these complaints, that Apple is not looking into this more seriously. Well, I guess I can believe it as it is probably too small of a number of complaints for them to even care about. If anything, they should be concern with what seems to be a design flaw and fix it.

I would like to ask you aCruceSalus to be more specific with this crack. Because I have realised that two different problems seem to occur both charging for an entire screen replacement.

There are 2 things that can crack here. The actual LCD screen, which I think is less likely to happen, and the chin part under the screen, the part with the Macbook Pro writing on it. This later part is made out of glass but is in effect a separate piece. And I will repeat, this piece can be replaced inexpensively, under 20$. Replacements can be found on ebay or aliexpress, they will though not be original parts. I have seen options to even opt out to an acrylic version, which I guess would be more durable. This part is attached, over the cables connecting the body and screen, just with some glue.

Same here, as i've posted before the bottom of my screen has broken too, crack in the middle. Now, after a few weeks later: I opened my macbook again, a few minutes before I was working with and I closed it, and my display is broken. When I open my Macbook slowly the display is fine. If the angle is getting bigger while open Macbook the display starts to flicker and then I get a big vertical black bar in the middle of the screen. 😠😟😢

I never had so much troubles with an apple device and I'm working with Apple since more then 20 years.

Bad, very bad.

My MacBook Pro also broke twice already and I’ve only had it for year and a half. I barely use it. it never leaves my desk or my house so it doesn’t get used roughly at all! The Touch bar broke and I replaced that for over $300 and now the screen cracked just by me opening it and touching my thumb on the side. They want $475 to fix it. I will have invested almost half of the value of this computer with repairs. Stupidly I went to a MacBook I should’ve stuck with a PC. I can’t wait to get rid of it. I asked if I could sell it back to them and they said you can donate it back to us for recycling for zero dollars. Give me a break.

my 15 mbp screen cracked when i tried to close it. grabbed from the top right corner, pulled and i heard the tiny crunch. a big crack appeared from the top to bottom of the screen. nothing wedged in-between, laptop was on a flat table. the display now shows nothing except for trippy liquid colours.

spoken to many genius types, obviously accidental damage isn't covered, usual £650+ price quoted for a new screen.

I cannot quite bring myself to pay that much for something i consider a design flaw, the screen should not crck when i try to close it.

i'm about to sell this thing and buy a PC. i paid nearly £4,000 for it including apple care, and i can't live with paying that much after only having it for a year.

Thank you to everyone in this thread who advised to call customer service.

You all know my story- closed my new(ish) macbook with NOTHING between the screen & keyboard and heard the gut wrenching crack of something breaking. Thankfully I found this thread and followed the advice of several people to call Apple customer service and insist on speaking to someone who would authorise a replacement free of charge.

Remain polite but assertive, refer to the multitude of complaints in this thread and elsewhere online. It helps if you're a loyal customer and to mention that- I've bought five macbooks, two desktops, three ipads and countless iphones in the last 15 years and suggested if this was the quality of their new products, I may start looking elsewhere.

Moral of the story is- they WILL fix it for free. Got an appointment with Genius bar that day - yeah, the guy was patronisingly insisted screens don't crack by themselves but I'd already been over his head so hahhaaa- and have my macbook back four days later with a shiny new screen :)

Thanks again, legends of this thread!

VagabondForest--

More info to add to your experience:

Although it is not typical, a few loyal customers have been granted a special exception and were provided with a replacement PART, provided they pay the US$99 fee for Apple's replacement labor.

Knowing that this sometimes has been done, it may be a helpful fallback position for negotiating, it they refuse the entire cost of complete repair.

Sorry to hear about your cracked screen incident folks. I've taken care of my Macbook Pro 15" Touch Bar since the day I purchased it in April 2017. It costed me a cool $2,700 with the upgrades and education discount. Now after turning my head for 1 second, one of young cats decided to bite down on the top right boarder frame on the screen. There are 14 teeth marks dented in now. This small imperfection angers me off to the max as someone who cares for their personal belongings. And Apple doesn't seem to make it easy or cost effective for screen replacement sales for DIY. I love my Macbook Pro. But now I wish I never bought it because I had hope it would be a great long term investment for a laptop. Instead I will have to continue using my laptop with the bite marks that haunt my screen every time I use it. Or try to set up a repair appointment although I'm hoping it shouldn't even cost so much more than a couple hundred dollars for a laptop screen. You can purchase a 4k 65" television for around the ballpark of $500 nowadays.

I had the same issue. Apparently by the time this happened to me Apple had received enough complaints on this that I didn’t get the response you did. I was actually told that these computers are much more fragile. This was an Apple employee telling me that as she shared that they get several of these complaints on a weekly basis at the Apple stores. I’m very upset! I was literally wiping dust off my computer when the bottom of my screen cracked. It literally sounded and felt like an egg shell! If anyone is interested in filing a suit against Apple over this issue, I’m in! I paid a lot of money to have this thing crack in 30 days! I could have spent way less for this kind of quality :-/

3) Why don't you tell your customers in your manuals not to clean this fragile place, not to touch it and not to breathe on it

The issue is often discovered when cleaning, but damage may have actually happened earlier -- If the MacBook Pro is handled in exactly this way:

Picked up or moved when closed, by pinching the center rear in one hand, with the thumb of one hand on top, and the remaining fingers below the exhaust vents at the rear.

This puts the maximum possible pressure on the bottom of the screen and the bottom-bezel. The glass bottom bezel is sometimes later found to have be damaged by this much pressure.

My macbook C02T3B8TGTFM is the WORSE machine I have EVER owned . From day one track pad jumps to left corner whilst in use. The keyboard a KNOWN issue by apple double types some letters and need to bbe replaced by apple!! Easy when you live near an apple store and you are NOT a sole carer to a severely disabled son who you rely part time work by using this piece of expensive piece of badly made parts. The screen broke the same way yours did dust, elements in the environment cannot escape the valley on the fold of the screen to the keyboard and so crack the screen, The glass seems super thin. The keyboard is supper clunky and noisey . IT is by far the worse upgrade I HAVE EVER MADE. Dont get me started on the USBc's
