Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

TL:DR -- Apple covered mine without charge. Only because I cited this thread for backup, took photos from start to progressive damage, and was politely insistent. The Apple store staff is probably not your friend. Call in first, and request a Senior Advisor to handle your claim.

If this happens to you, being armed with photos and this thread is your best shot at having it covered.

I opened my MacBook Pro one morning and saw a small spidery line inside the LCD on the lower right near the hinge. I had not dropped it, hadn't moved it from the table in days. Then it spread. Then it got worse. Then a second line began. My speculation: it's a fragile LCD and there was something amiss with the assembly at the hinge putting pressure on the LCD. No physical signs on the outside of the screen.
FWIW, mine is one of the "popping" 2016 MLH42LL/A laptops, right out of the box. Popping Sound, MBP 2016

After seeing this thread, I called Apple to get a case number. The rep said it would be covered, and if the store genius gave me a hard time to ask for a manager. The Apple store experience was the dispiriting time suck I expected: they told me $680 for the repair and told me I had dropped it; then admitted they couldn't find any point of impact; then when pressed to give me their hypothetical scenario, finally speculated that I must have closed it with -- please clutch your pearls here -- a grain of rice I didn't notice. Come on, guys.

Know when you are dealing with unreasonable people. I returned home, called in again, had a long talk with a sympathetic rep who escalated it to a senior advisor. I sent photos while we were on the phone. The SA said they look for a point of impact, and a spiderweb, and there was none. He said he was entering notes in the case to be covered at no charge, but to be aware that the techs might disagree upon exam. Apple overnighted me a box, I overnighted it back, and they replaced the screen and overnighted it back. No charge.

Flawless top notch CS... once you get to the right person.

So -- be informed, be reasonable, be firm, and know to walk away and talk to someone else. I believe that Apple will eventually send out a quality report about the LCDs. They know about this, but they are going to stonewall when they can.

The other thing to note is that early adopters of the MBP touchbar are under the older AppleCare Protection Plan. Apple rolled out AppleCare Protection Plus in June of 2017, which includes 2 incidents of accidental damage. There are no plans to grandfather the earlier MBPs, nor to offer the Plus for a upcharge (which I would happily pay) to bring all of this model under consistent coverage. It's frustrating to be effectively punished for being an early adopter of the new models, where all of the design flaws are showing up with use.

Same problem! Crack on bottom right corner... and growing. I was lightly wiping the screen with a sense cleaner when some lines appeared on the right. I was disappointed, but did not think too much about it. By the following day, the crack has grown to about 1 cm so I have lost the bottom and right side of the screen.

This machine is complete crap! The keyboard is terrible, the letters do not respond (I already had to go in because the 't' and '3' stopped working.

I've had about 10-12 Macs and, besides a hard drive that died, I've never had ANY problems before. My old one is now 7 years old and is still working fine. A bit too slow, but otherwise fine.

This one... definitively not the quality I've come to expect from Apple! What a disappointment... let's see what they say tomorrow at the Apple Store.

Idk man. There’s 24 pages here of people with the same problem. This happened twice with my own laptop and to this day I have no clue how it happened. It’s extremely frustrating for people who spent money on what’s meant to be the most competitive laptop on the market and later find cracks and dents with absolutely no explanation and are told “it’s your fault”. This is by far the most fragile laptop Apple has put out. For the cost it feels a bit slimy.

"Screen breaks. Wants to learn about it"

What's there to learn about? You go to Apple if you broke your screen. If you have AppleCare Plus it's covered for repair. If you don't have it then you pay. Simple as that. Every complaint here is a new account. Wouldn't the others that have been here a long time be complaining about a broken screen too? I don't see that. Does it only happen to members with new accounts? Sure seems to be the case. Then each post ends in a rant or "I'll never buy an Apple product again, etc...".

I see a planned agenda here from outside sources.

"Comments on this subject date back to June of 2017. Many users, including myself, have also uploaded pictures with their comments."

And who's doubting the bottom panels are cracked? I can see that plainly. But these are not defects. This is accidental damage inflicted by the consumer. So coming here to post a rant rather than going to Apple to get it rectified does what? Why don't you go to Apple to get it fixed?

Sorry @DPJ,

but this is not an appropriate answer, nor is it helpful.

I am not a native english speaker, so please forgive me for using the word "convince"

I even had to translate the words serendipitous and negligence

Let's say: I was happy that the guy believed me.

I say this because I contacted the dealer before and they also just said something like: "this is your fault"

But I do understand you - a cracked display just looks like the user didn't treat the MacBook right. I also couldn't believe what happened to the screen when I opened it. And a big problem is probably that a lot of people try claim warranty when it's there fault.

In the meantime I got a theory:

The fact that I almost work the whole time with a closed display might be the reason for the failure. Maybe the display doesn't like the heat that the MacBook produces in long term.

"But I do understand you - a cracked display just looks like the user didn't treat the MacBook right."

It's not about simply mistreating the MacBook, it's the fact that some hard object was logged in between the screen and the top case which is the keyboard. When you closed the lid that tiny hard object caused the screen to crack. That's logic and fact. Saying that you simply closed the lid and the screen cracked itself is not logical and completely defies the laws of physics. Just because you don't know how it happened doesn't mean you're not negligent. If you can convince me that a glass screen cracks itself I'll be happy to listen.

But to be honest, your MacBook looks pretty dirty in the hinge area and that's the gist of this thread. People allowing dirt and small hard objects to get down in the hinge area causing the screen to crack when the lid is closed.

I also see that you ignored my request for you to upload and share the repair receipt?

I have the exact same issue with a 2 month old MacBook Pro 15 inc – I lifted my MacBook screen up to discover that the cowling had cracked across the 'MacBook Pro' lettering.

Took my machine to the Apple Store and I was told that his was my fault and the cost would be £625 to repair.

I'm sorry but my MacBook is in immaculate condition, nothing was done to the machine for this to happen and it s clearly a fault and/or not fit for normal usage.

The warranty-provider decides whether to cover the repair, not you.

Apple's policy to date is that these screen are rigorously inspected for defects (which would show as optical imperfections) at several stages during the manufacturing process, and all that survive the shipment from the factory, half-way around the world to you and are delivered without cracks are defect-free.

No one cares how it happened.

Same problem. I bought new Mac Pro 2019. My laptop is 99% time at home and after 14 days i recognized 2 small crack on lower screen chin bar. No hit, no fall - carry like diamant (new machine, you sure know).

Servis canceled repair on warranty. Im rly sad about quallity of this PC - last mac pro 2015 was after 4 years service in 99% condittion and now - new machine is pice of crap and I am really sceary about traveling with my PC.

And after 1 month . first repolace of keyboard :-D . new 2019 keyboard is same problem like olders.

My recommendation - Do not buy any Macbook from new generation.

Apple shame on you!!

"I will never accept that the fragility and damages to it are our responsibility."

Accepting whether or not it's your responsibility is not going to get Apple to pay for the repair. You'd have to show proof that the product is flawed. If not then the responsibility is for sure on the consumer.
