Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

Hi Drtimothy

Bought this Mac Pro 15 2018 in July 2018 in Lisbon Portugal.

Yesterday I noticed some lines on the right side of the screen. Looking closer with lens I discover a small crack in the right end of the display. The out side glass is not cracked only the inside display. It. was about 3 mm but now is coming bigger.

This Mac has been treated like a baby and there are any even marks on is body that could result from small impacts. I'm completely sure that nothing was clamped between the display and the key board because I already shout about this will ruin the display. Last thing I did was moving it over the table using the very low edges of the screen to lifted ups bit over a book. I didn't felt any crack but some minutes later I can see a defect screen. With time defect become bigger and now I have vertical and horizontal line starting from the crack.

Today I went to Apple service repair and there ask 800 Euros for the repair. They claim this is no warranty because the screw is cracked.

Of course I'm revolted agains this warranty policy and it is evident that this screen is not protected enough. I looks like done to sale parts and as always with a very good margin.

I'm completely surprysed about this warranty policy and also surprised by the price of the repair. Today I went to the Apple service repair and they ask for 800 Euros to replace the screen. No warranty was consider even looking and the pristine state of the Mac.

First the screen should be protected with an outside glass with some impact certification like the mobile phones. Second , this a warranty case. No injuries no the out side should define a warranty case!!

This is good to sell parts , but will not be good to sell me another product in the future.

If you have a new Mac Pro be very careful with the display and make an insurance anyway as I didn't did mine thinking I was too careful.

I called the support line and told them my display was damaged by a piece of elastic material being trapped between the screen and keyboard. The material was as thick as about five sheets of paper. I sent them pictures of the screen that show no surface damage, and explained my MacBook pro 17 inch screen was all i had to go by as far as display normal toughness, I also told them they should warn people about the displays fragile nature so they can act accordingly. I was told by the service rep that the pictures show no surface damage and it should be treated as a defect and repairable under the one yr hardware warranty. But we will see what happens. I would hate to sever my relationship with Apple over this, but they should stand by their product, and make changes necessary to strengthen the displays surface so it can perform as a mobile computing tool should. Not asking for a tough book, just a reliable everyday performer like my 17 inch MacBook pro has been.

Hi , I have just repaired my MacPro 15 from 2018 with a very similar problem. The outside screen glass was ok but the display itself cracked due to small pressure of my thumbs when lifting it a bit by same place yours cracked. Result is a bill of 875 Euros!!

For this money one can buy a brand new windows computer! It is not the same machine but at least it doesn't crack like this one.

Meanwhile I was inspecting MacPro older versions and they look like war machines compare to this one. One of them suffer a fall down to concrete flour and only have small scratch on the thick aluminium case.

Be very careful with this machines , it must be treated like a very young Baby other wise you have to buy two or three of them in spare parts.

I had my display crack internally when a piece of elastic material was caught between the display and the keyboard. The display seemed very fragile. When touched lightly with a finger it would leave a swirl mark as I dragged my finger across it. the damage was an internal crack at the bottom of the display and horizontal and vertical lines. I sent it in for repair. To my surprise the screen replacement did not exhibit the same swirl marks when I made contact with my finger, it seemed like Apple had reengineered it to be more durable. But I did have to pay for the repair. I am hoping a class action law suit comes about to reimburse those who like me experience damage with nearly zero contact with the screen

I have the same devastating experience. My MacBook 2018 is brand new, it has this cool Touch Bar, and today, I noticed a stain on the bottom corner, but when I rubbed my finger to wipe it, tiny specks of glass came off! I had to use a scotch tape to take some of these small glass off my finger. BE CAREFUL not to touch it if you notice anything unusual on the MacBook Pro Screen.

This just happened to me!! I plugged the MacBook Pro on to the charger and when I went back and opened it there were lines all through it. I didn’t realize that it was because it was cracked. I didn’t even see the crack in lower left corner. I am a very honest person and I would admit if I had damaged in it any way but I literally did nothing to it. At the Apple store they said the cord must have gotten caught in between the screen and the keyboard when I shut it. IT DIDN’T. They want 680.00 to fix it. The computer is not even 4 months old! I am devastated. I was so upset I almost cried in the store. I don’t want the thing anymore. I am furious at Apple because I see that others have had the same issue. This is outrageous. My husband wasn’t happy that I spent $2000.00 on this piece of junk and now I have to shell out another $680.00 or throw in the trash which I am very tempted to do. Shame you Apple!!!!!

I agree with you and share your feelings. I am upset and frustrated still because I know the cracked screen in my MacBook Pro was Apples Design Flaw around the hinges. Samsung created something similar but the hinge design is far more superior and stable .

Apple should allow the new MacBook Pro users to do a full refund or at least exchange the item for something more durable like the previois MacAir. There were talks about the low quality control and that most Apple products were made in China but being sold in the US.

I don’t care if it’s made in China as long as the quality is superior.

The right thing for Apple to do, if you are reading this Apple, DO NOT CoVer up your mistakes and correct the problem. A thousand more people will complain and you will lose your market edge.

Refund us the money and for all these inconvenience of shipping back the broken screen, waiting for days before we can work with the laptop, and then charging us more money on top of the $2,000 we gave your company for a durable and high quality laptop.

Yes I received my 2018 MacBook Pro brand new and barely used it. Within 30 days I noticed something which I thought was a smudge in the lower corner. I ignored it for several days intil tried to wipe the screen and tiny specks of glass came off - they stick my fingers- and I had to use a scotch tape to take them off.. Apparently the screen cracked near the hinges.

"He only cleaned it with a soft cloth, when this small crack appeared."

Unless you actually witnessed this happening I think your client may have cracked his/her screen another way without his/her knowledge. I have visited multiple retail stores checking out that bar below the screen. I've pressed with force and was unable to get it to crack. It's certainly not as vulnerable as cleaning the screen with a cloth. Usually something like a small pebble gets lodged between the screen and the body and closing the screen causes the crack. It takes a great deal of force. If I wasn't able to crack it then cleaning it with a cloth certainly wouldn't do it.

Haha, unless you don't know my client, nor the details of the situation, your comment is even more useless as you claim his story to be.

I am always sceptic about what clients come in with regarding damage, but in this case I have no reason to question what happend. And ofcourse, he didn't throw a cloth up in the air, gently falling over his Macbook and damaging the screen. Maybe you have never cleaned your screen before (tip; try it, makes a world of difference!) but you have to apply a little force for the fabric to rub against the screen, otherwise nothing happens! ;) And no, even with some force, this should not happen to a €3000+ computer that is otherwise very sturdy. Also, I'm sceptic about you finding any 2017 Macbook Pro's on display anywhere still. And don't mind me saying, but going round to purposly try and break screens of retailers inventory is just disgraceful.

I LITERALLY HAVE THE SME ISSUE!! Apple told me they can do nothing but charge me for an entire new screen!!! How can you pay R35 000 for a computer with only a one year warranty. I WAS a fan of Apple, however, I think I’ve made the wrong choice. I had the 2013 MacBook Pro and never had any issues with it! Now this in just 16 months after purchase?!
