Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

My screen has two holes in it. I have repaired it as best I can. Any and all visits to the Genius Bar are the decision of the owner of the MBP.

No one has the right to try and dissuade anyone else from having an Apple store look at the damage and access the situation. I had a free consultation online with a tech and was able to send screen shots of the damage.

It is not user error, it is a design flaw.

You have no right to try and dissuade a customer from having their MBP looked at and evaluated.

NicoletteBG. Hi there and thanks for your input, I hear what you're saying and I have the exact same problem of hundreds of other MBP users. As mentioned I will book mine in at a Genius Bar and see what comes of it. If you make it before me then please feedback into the forum. I'm compiling a case for apple, because an estimates several hundred repair fee sounds very concerning and extremely poor service. I have a great quality standards advicate here in the UK so I think we can all find a solution to this.

Hi everyone,

I had send my MBP to get checked on after the screen spontaneously (and out of nowhere) broke after 5 weeks of usage at a desk and even when mentioning the thousands of other comments on here, Apple won't budge. I have to pay 600+ euros to get this screen replaced while i have had this laptop for less than 6 weeks. They said i might have been too rough when closing the laptop... Thats honestly just a bunch of nonsense. I have always been a loyal costumer but i cannot believe this new apple macbook pro is so fragile. Now i'm even scared to start moving the thing around once it gets back to me (I have a pretty active job in non-pandemic times). What a waste of money. I used to travel extensively with my previous MBP and i'm pretty sure this new one won't be able to handle that. Is there any possibility i will get the repair money paid back once apple recognises this issue? And is there anything we can do to get apple to do this?

That's exactly what happened to me. The hinge behind the glass hit first one side, then the other. Each time I heard a sickening crunch. The glass pieces were very fragile I couldn't believe they used it for the screen. I guess I'm lucky it didn't destroy my display. I covered each hole with electrical tape and so far my screen is still useable though very ugly. I had my MBP for only a few weeks. Now every time I see someone on TV slap their laptop shut I cringe. I treat mine beyond gently now. I can't afford a new screen and don't have any guarantee this would not happen again, even worse.

Same problem here too! Opened up my MacBook Pro 16in this morning and discovered what I first thought was a bit of fluff I actually a crack to the screen!

Any ideas what to do? I'm definitely not forking out the crazy amounts some others have had to do on this topic. I'm going to complain as I've NEVER had this with ANY laptop I've ever owned, Mac or PC.

I returned my last MBP (15in 2018) through the Consumer Rights because of the horrendous butterfly keyboard. Looks like this may be another return...

I bought it directly from Apple. And no, they did nothing to help me. At the time I was living where they had no Apple stores so I couldn't take it in. I didn't buy Apple Care and when I called they said all screen damage was assumed to be due to user error or abuse. They made me cry because it was so expensive and ended up as a paper weight after less than a month.

Apple has already removed my previous posts about this. It’s obviously a defective part that this company will not take credit for.

I’ve purchased so many apple products, I’m disappointed they are treating loyal customers this way. Cheapest screen replacement is $800-1000. Could almost buy another computer with that.

I just launched a website I have no access too. Thanks Apple. All the money I’ve invested in your products & this is how you handle a forum of thousands of customers who bought your product. SMH.

Joining this discussion to say "Me too" - 16-inch MacBook Pro - less than a month old. I closed it and when I opened it, discovered a tiny crack in the lower left.... Ridiculous. This was the most expensive computer I've ever bought, and comments here don't make me optimistic about getting help from AppleCare+...

I think this is an interesting question because it could explore whether this is a product fault or accidental damage. However, it depends on when the replacement parts were made and if they were identical to the original parts. Given the number of replacements, I would assume that the replacement part has been improved since the launch of the MBP model.

This would explain the reduced number of faults post replacement. In either case, there are situations (anomalies) where it is impossible to determine a future product fault. I think these cases are most likely a product fault, a weakness in a particular section of the screen probably a combination of factors and a difficult combination to test given Apple's rapid cycling of new hardware.

However, despite this likelihood, Apple is unlikely to admit to unknown causation but just may find a clever economic and creative way to satisfy the needs of their loyal consumer base by doing the honest thing?

Yes, I'm extremely curious. I had this happen on my device after less than a month. No accidents, no travel, just opening and closing the laptop normally. It's on its way back to Apple for repair - after decades of using Apple products, I've never had an issue with a screen or any kind of issue this soon after purchase, so I hope that this will be a one and done repair....

Apr 20, 2021 12:52 PM in response to drtimothy

Wow! I can’t believe this issue seems to have been present since 2017 and Apple are still comfortable charging customers £500-700 for a display assembly repair when it is quite obvious a fault. I have had an M1 MacBook Pro since January 2021, and as I’m working and studying from home, it’s lived on my desk in my home office. I’m extremely careful and meticulous when it comes to my Apple devices as they’re often purchased with years worth of savings. But this downright made me cry. I was sat at my desk completing an assignment, I left the room (just me at my home) and when I came back a few minutes later, the display had cracked internally and vertical lines had appeared. There is simply no explanation as to how this happened but the Genius Bar instantly told me it’s accidental damage and that I probably applied too much pressure when cleaning the screen. I’ve never heard such nonsense. These are devices that are meant to travel and be used in all sorts of scenarios and if cleaning the screen with a soft cloth can smash it, that’s a huge concern. They have quoted near £600 to repair the display. Has anyone had success getting this repaired by Apple or without having to pay out such a high price?
