Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

Congratulations! I'm happy to hear that your repair was accomplished. It may depend on where you live, which store you are dealing with and the Apple employees, as you say, getting the entire story from beginning to end. I'm very glad that your outcome was a positive one.☺️ Other than the massive monetary loss I have endured with the new MBP, I like my Apple devices, especially my MBPs from earlier years. My 2012 is blemish free. Sturdy and never had a problem with anything but my outgrowing it's capabilities. Also I waited a long time for a larger screen only to have the satisfaction fade very quickly due to holes appearing in front of the hinges.

since I found that this happened to many MBP owners, I will try to talk to the manager in our apple lab.

also, I found that Apple sent a warning about using a cam cover on MBP, it looks like that was the cause of the crack.

But I don't think it is my fault, if there is a problem with the screen that cam cover breaks it, the seller should point it out... its not my responsibility to look in the internet for all the product manufacture defects.

I was able to have the repairs made to the screen, Apple covered the costs but only after a second call to speak to senior support. The second call went something like this... " Im asking Apple inc. one last time to do whats right and remedy a well documented problem before me proceeding to small claims court". The 1st call lasted an hour with no resolve. The second call was no longer than 5 minutes before an apponitment was made at the closest Apple store the next day. The glass still goes to the bottom but has a 1/2" strip of like a vinyl wrap or electrical tape that runs the full width. See pic

Im also more than devastated, I just purchased mi macbook pro 16 inch fully customized and spend close to $5000 USD on this. I should say this is the worse MPB Apple has ever build. Its is much more noisy than previous models, and the it gets really really hot while connected to mi 4k external monitor.

I’m going to be really honest with you guys, I took care and treat this machine better my own wife, and yesterday I close the screen as usual and I ear the crack. The lower LCD bezel just crack and I didn't have any object over the keyboard.

I contact apple support, I manage to talk to a senior supervisor but they told me this will not be covered by the warranty. Now I will have to spend over $700 USD on the replacement.

I will try to fix this as soon as possible (as soon as I can get the money), and also will try to return this machine. I can’t believe all the money I have spent and the money I will lose, because I’m out of the returning period.

I am devastated, so tired of fighting with the pandemic, my economic situation could not be worse at this time and now I have to deal with this. This is the tool I use to provide for my family.

Apple, please listen to your customers like you did in the past, please take notice of all this issues and set a recall program for this machine, this is the most expensive unit you guys sell, and it should also be the most incredible one, but between the noise, heat, and delicate materials, this is now the worse model of your MBP lineup.

Thanks for listening.

The same thing happened to me. A paper clip somehow got in the space between the screen and the keyboard and it cracked the screen. A freaking paper clip! My laptop was literally brand new it was still under warranty and they wouldn’t cover the repair. I am absolutely disgusted! I only had the computer a month i had a protective case and a carrying case and it was destroyed by a freaking paper clip and it wasn’t even a big paper clip 😤

Did you call the manager at the branch or the online store? I could not even get them to take the MAC from me with out agreeing to pay the 700$ charge. The funny thing is they act like these units don't break, but they also try push the Apple extended care like it is going out of fashion, and they claim to know it is a crack screen just by looking at it (which is amazin since they supposedly don't have issues with them cracking).

I had this too, perfectly protected MAC book, always in a case, and transported in a case in a case. My old one lasted for 7 years, but this one did not even make it past two. The screen went black, the store claimed they could see the crack but when I asked them to show me he quickly back pedaled multiple times until he finally admitted he had not seen one and was just guessing. He tried to blame it on a thing like using anything (including a piece of tape) on the camera. I said I didn't so then he just changed it to I should have gotten the care plan, but then admitted it may not cover the monitor anyways unless I got a more extended one and still said it may not. Two stores claimed the monitors breaking was not a thing, and said 700 min to get it fixed but also admitted they would never actually check the cause, just swap out monitors. I could use advice from anyone that can help fix this issue, our school will not cover this mac book's repairs even though I only use it for the job there (since we've been stuck working online there for the past year) and MAC does not seem to care about school employees. :(

Let’s start sharing this on social media

what ****** me off the most about this is that when I took it in to get it fixed they put it on me told me I had to pay 600 of my own money while this person had knowledge of this issue. Apple can fix this problem or they can go fuck themselves. What a crime to sell a product with a defect to people who right now are struggling to get by because of covid and blame the customer when they bring their MacBook in to be fixed and make them pay $600 when apple was already fully aware that this was an issue. I’m never purchasing an apple product again greedy apple bastards

My macbook pro M1 13inch 2020 is only 2 months old when the bezel cracked on the right side. I am also very careful with my computers, this being my 6th macbook laptop, and the first time I have had any kind of damage, so I am really upset. It hasn't, so far, effected the screen image but I read that it could over time. I took it to the local dealer and they suggested to just tape over it to stop it from cracking more, unless I want to pay for a whole new screen! They didn't want to change the bezel for it is too dangerous to do so. I have been going over and over how it could have happened. Like most people I closed it at night and when I opened in the morning I saw the damage. I keep my laptop as clean as possible. I am now so afraid everytime I open in the morning that I will find more damage. I am keeping it on the desk and not moving it which is really stupid since I buy laptops so I can travel with them and have in the past without any problems. Nothing to do but complain on social media hoping apple will fix this bad design so that others don't face the same situation.

This has also happened to me, I bought my macbook pro 13" M1 last may. Worked flawlessly until Saturday 8/21/21, I was on when horizontal lines in the center of the screen appeared, the upper half of the screen appeared to have a stepped back look. I restarted it and the lines were still there, I called apple support, we tried a updating, I didn't have the latest and it didn't fix it. That was all the tech could do. We set up a genius bar appointment for today 8/24. I continued to use my mac for the rest of the day. Closed the lid and when I opened it up Sunday there were hairline cracks emanating from the left side of the screen where that horizontal line first appeared, from then on the display went out, only vertical bars showing. Took it into apple today and I had to pay 570 to repair it because the cracks were considered damage and not a manufacturing defect! I am not happy to say the least. I will be contacting apple to bitch, dont know if it will do any good but Im going to try. I did call Apple support when the cracks appeared to have it on record and showing that it showed up after the screen started acting up! If these screens are this delicate then they have a design flaw in them. This is my third macbook pro and I have NEVER had an issue till now, in fact this reply is being typed on a mid 2009 Macbook pro. Im disgusted.....

My 2019 16" MacBook Pro LCD randomly cracked and the screen went black. I had to talk to 5 different people for Apple to finally make a "one time exception" and fix it for me. I told one of the customer support staff that I never dropped my laptop and I merely closed and opened it to find a cracked screen (my argument was that this was clearly a design or manufacturing issue and not "accidental damage" like they told me it was), and they said that even though there are people who posted online with the same issue as me with the same laptop model, Apple won't have a repair program for that model unless the majority of users have the same issue. Which sounds extremely unfair and unethical - people will basically have to fight or pay up for Apple's mistakes
