Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

I came upon this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7995345?page=1) after I too experienced crushing and cracking damage of the logo baffle from something which dropped, unseen, into the “jaws” of the screen-hinging area of my new, 13-inch, 2018 MacBook Air.

Clearly, this is a defect in “materials and workmanship” which subject the MBs to easy accidental damage and, therefore should be covered by the warranty.

  • The material in question is the fragile, glass-like logo baffle which can easily crack and shatter given enough local pressure. Materials with such characteristics should never be used in areas subject to vice-like pressures or, for that matter, normal pressures encountered in screen cleaning. Future designs should mitigate such vice-like mechanics in cover/screen hinging.

  • The workmanship in question is the design of the screen/body hinging, where the space between the screen (and logo baffle ) diminishes as the screen/cover is closed, trapping and crushing anything which has fallen, unnoticed, into the dark, yawning gap, damaging the logo baffle and, possibly, the display screen, too.

As with defective airbags, the manufacturer, i.e., Apple, should be responsible for:

  • Issuing a product warning to all owners of relevant MacBook models regarding this accidental damage vulnerability and measures to take to mitigate such damage*;
  • Developing and offering free replacement of the defective part, one which would not be easily subjected to such damage; and
  • Repairing, at no charge, damaged logo baffles and display screens which have already occurred.

*I believe most of us would never have experienced damage if Apple had alerted us to the possibilities of such. We would then have attended to and avoided debris which might easily or otherwise, fall between the cracks with such costly consequences.

Hi!

For everyone who has this hairline crack damage, which then gets bigger and bigger. I just called Apple Service 4 times. The problem is now known there and is also fully documented. Don't give up and get on Apple's nerves and get a manager at Apple's phone support (even if you have to wait on hold). Also enter it at https://www.apple.com/feedback/, almost as a complaint. The more people report it and energetically inform Apple, the faster something happens that the MacBooks will be called back. That helps each of us. I do it because I've always been satisfied with all Apple products.

Good news. During the second visit to the Apple Store and other employees, the monitor break was recognized as a factory problem. The staff took a lot of time and took a close look at the display and also recognized that the large crack was caused by a hairline crack on the lower left edge of the monitor. It's a shame that not all employees work as professionally as the 2 colleagues in the Apple Store Berlin today. But I'm very happy that it ended well. I was also confirmed by one of the employees that 3 other cases of this problem had already been reported in the store. It goes on. Nevertheless, also in consultation with the Apple Store Berlin, enter this error at https://www.apple.com/feedback/ to make it easier for others to claim the damage.

I have had the same experience. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that is still going strong, but managed to crack the screen of a 2017 model while cleaning it (carefully).

If everyone on this thread would take 5mins to report this as feedback to apple, perhaps they would consider it as a manufacturing flaw: https://www.apple.com/feedback/.

They do need to be aware of it first, after all. I expect the authorised representatives in various countries would very seldomly take the time to report these as possible quality issues.

I have two 15inch MacBook Pros, one for work use and one for personal use – you can see what happened to my personal laptop in my previous posts, but in short a crack appeared across the strip where it says MacBook Pro.

I use both laptops exactly the same one has the issue one does not. Neither has had any trauma, drop, anything sandwiched between it. Regardless of what anyone says like many others on here, I did not cause this damage to my personal laptop.

I am a Designer therefore I have had many Apple products and particulary Macbook Pro's. I have never experienced anything like this it is bizarre and very disappointing.

THERE IS NO POINT IN CONTACTING APPLE:

  1. In Store - They are programmed to say that this is a crack and it is accidental damage - Dead end.
  2. Online – They have no power to help you, especially if you purchased the MacBook from one of their stores or another outlet.

I have also contacted 'Resolver' an online tool for complaints and claims. I was contacted by Apple here and told to contact the store that I purchased the laptop from – Going around in circles, the store would not help me as above.

I was told by Apple Liverpool and Apple Birmingham that I should contact the Retail Ombudsman if I am not happy – I contacted them and this is not an option as Apple are not part of their system - Dead end once again, and also told wrong information.

My insurers can easily cover the repair but I am not happy to do this, I have lost confidence in the product and Apple. I would rather return the laptop for a refund but as you can see above there are not many options if any at all.

Just wanted to further share my experience...

It is so much disappointing to see here more than 1000 messages with similar problems under this question and no problem decision from Apple.

I consider myself a loyal Apple devises customer, and I've never faced any problems with devices that I and my family use at home or at work.

But the current situation frustrates me a lot. Two days ago I was cleaning my Macbook Pro and suddenly my bottom screen panel broke. Although, I didn't press and wasn't harsh while wiping. So, I took my computer and went to Apple service here in St. Petersburg, Russia, being confident that the service would change the panel in two days because my Macbook is still under guarantee. Unfortunately, the man on the service desk after a short glance answered that this damage is considered to be my fault and the repair of the whole (!!!) screen costs 500USD.

I was disappointed and a bit shocked by three things:

1) Why the damage on the bottom panel demands the WHOLE screen change for 500 USD?

2) Why the screen panel on Macbook Pro (that is thought to be unbreakable) is thinner and more fragile than the protecting glass on my Iphone?

3) Why don't you tell your customers in your manuals not to clean this fragile place, not to touch it and not to breathe on it if the guarantee doesn't support these accidents later? You change without any complaints such thing as EarPods also because of their fragility...

And the main thing frustrating me is... Why should I pay 500 USD for a whole (!!!) screen replacement if I wasn't careless or harsh with my Apple devices, I was just caring and cleaning it...

After talking to the Apple service manager I also contacted Apple Support in a chat but I got same answers again.

I hope Apple Support can answer any of my questions :( or let me know who I can contact to get a good explanation...

Otherwise, I could later spend 500 USD and buy Apple Watch or Apple Ipad as a Christmas gift and now have to think of my screen (?) replacement.

Hello Everyone!

Has anyone experienced this with their new MacBook Pro? Mine is 2018 with Touch Bar. I got it in late December of 2018. And today, I was shocked to find out that what I thought was a stain on the lower half of my screen, was actually a cracked glass. When I rubbed it off with my thumb, tiny specks of thin material came off.  I had to use a scotch tape to pull tiny specks of glass off my finger. So BE CAREFUL - if you see an anomaly on the screen, do not touch it.

Same problem here with a 2017 Macbook Pro 15" from a client. He only cleaned it with a soft cloth, when this small crack appeared. He opted to leave it, but 4 months later his display started to show strange colours. It was sent in for repair but now the repaircenter claims it is because of this crack, that the screen is broken. Replacement will cost €1100 !! while the machine is still under warranty!

I hope Apple takes notice of this already 20 page long topic with numerous examples of way to fragile displays on a very premium product. It would be nice if they could start a special waranty replacement program of some sort, but I'm guessing this won't happen anytime soon.

Let's see what happens. I have pointed the repaircenter to this thread, hoping they can take notice and talk to Apple directly about this serious flaw.

I don't necessarily believe the screen cracks itself, but I personally just fell victim to this issue. I have never placed anything in between my laptop screen and the keyboard when it has closed. I was on my laptop until 2am last night without having a crack, and this morning at 10am when I opened my laptop for class I saw a crack. I keep it in a case any time I am not using it. Im thinking maybe there is a poor design with having that bottom part that is close to the hinge as glass. My thoughts are maybe I squeezed a little hard when picking up the laptop. The only thing is I am not that strong at all, but then again how much force could cause it I do not know at all. The crack on mine does follow where the screen would come in contact with the keyboard part of the laptop though.

Same thing happened to me. The day before the laptop was just sitting on the desk and everything was fine. The next day, when I opened it, I noticed a small crack on the bottom left corner. These was nothing in between when I closed it. Brought it in the store, they said it was a physical damage and not a defect. Called Apple support with no success so far.

Figured I'd share my experience as well. I was cleaning my laptop with an electronic wipe and had the same problem. Very gentle pressure and still I hear a crack. A year or so ago I had the corner of the display crack and I didn't even notice when it happened. Another time I had spiderwebs appear on the screen randomly and had to have it fixed. Can't stress enough that I treat my laptop very carefully. Two of times I didn't even see how the damage happened, it just appeared. Very unhappy with how fragile it is. Wish they would help their customers out with this issue.
