Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

Hey! So sorry this happened to you as well. I had to speak to a number of people at Apple to try and make it clear the damage wasn’t caused by me, eventually I got through to a really helpful Senior Advisor. He compared the photos of the internal LCD crack I took when it occurred, and compared it to the images the Apple service center provided which showed more damage than how the Apple Store sent it off. Luckily for me, he overruled the charge and so the repair was free and covered by Apple. It does seem that this is a very growing and worrying issue, however, and I am now petrified using or handling my MacBook Pro. I would suggest just keep trying to speak to a Senior Advisor and don’t give up.

Not a problem DEFriend58. I am under the impression that Apple are not letting this be an open platform for people to speak about their problems with these devices. Just to update you. I have emailed the retailer informing them of the issue with the device not being fit for purpose and that not as described. They telephoned me! Wouldn’t email back, they said that they could not take the device back for full refund but if the same thing happened again they would think about paying for the repair! Now I did not mention how much the repair would cost this company as they would be shocked! I said please put that in writing for me. They did somewhat. They said that they would not accept the laptop back as I had ownership for too long! Now I am going to inform them that this is being returned under Customer Rights Act 2015. And I will then post it to them. I will not accept it if they try to send it back to me! It is upto them to pay me back or it will be criminal then!

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) purchased in July.

No one pointed out before I bought it:

the super new 4 ports...are not magnetic and don't release easily...

So of course, when I accidentally stepped on the cord, it pulled the laptop right off the desk instead of releasing the way my other Mac laptops always did.

Though I like the 4 ports, I would have preferred the easy release feature.

The helpful guy at the Boca Raton Apple store knew all about this...

after I brought it in to yes, complain about the fragility, not only of the screen but in general.

If you look at the new models from the side angle it is very slender...so perhaps logical that it is more fragile?

This was not mentioned or pointed out.

The screen is now broken= $600 to fix. (apple wanted $1000+)

The speaker stopped working back in November, probably the result of the fall.

There have been keyboard issues since the beginning, have reported them regularly but I haven't had time to troubleshoot. Keyboard doesn't work well if it is cold in the house. (not talking freezing!)

This is my 3rd mac laptop, my 2nd mac book pro.

Have never had damage on the others, and have had 2 Mac desktops, ditto.

My first mac book pro was great...have had it since 2009, it is

and lasted much longer better than this.

Did not want a new laptop but was talked into it because just the MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) had the

super new system...the desktops did not yet have it last summer.

Seriously, seriously disappointed now.

I have the same devastating experience. My MacBook 2018 is brand new, it has this cool Touch Bar, and today, I noticed a stain on the bottom corner, but when I rubbed my finger to wipe it, tiny specks of glass came off! I had to use a scotch tape to take some of these small glass off my finger. BE CAREFUL not to touch it if you notice anything unusual on the MacBook Pro Screen.

Same problem here with a 2017 Macbook Pro 15" from a client. He only cleaned it with a soft cloth, when this small crack appeared. He opted to leave it, but 4 months later his display started to show strange colours. It was sent in for repair but now the repaircenter claims it is because of this crack, that the screen is broken. Replacement will cost €1100 !! while the machine is still under warranty!

I hope Apple takes notice of this already 20 page long topic with numerous examples of way to fragile displays on a very premium product. It would be nice if they could start a special waranty replacement program of some sort, but I'm guessing this won't happen anytime soon.

Let's see what happens. I have pointed the repaircenter to this thread, hoping they can take notice and talk to Apple directly about this serious flaw.

"He only cleaned it with a soft cloth, when this small crack appeared."

Unless you actually witnessed this happening I think your client may have cracked his/her screen another way without his/her knowledge. I have visited multiple retail stores checking out that bar below the screen. I've pressed with force and was unable to get it to crack. It's certainly not as vulnerable as cleaning the screen with a cloth. Usually something like a small pebble gets lodged between the screen and the body and closing the screen causes the crack. It takes a great deal of force. If I wasn't able to crack it then cleaning it with a cloth certainly wouldn't do it.

I had the same thing happen today was using my MacBook before closing the screen and going off to do some things around the house I come back 30 minutes later to find the crack it looked like impact damage but I know it wasn’t there when I closed the laptop nor was anything there to cause it. But there was the tiny crack with bits of the logo panel on the keyboard which makes me to go straight to it’s not something I did if the pieces were still there.

Have been in in contact with support and have an appointment so they can “inspect” the issue. But I brought up that this seems to have happened to many people and got it may possibly be covered under warrenty.

will update with what I get told.

The part that looks broken is an extra decorative bezel. The original part is made of glass. There are some reports of replaced screens featuring a strip of metal instead. That piece is not available separately at this writing.

There are anecdotes of Service Providers covering that area with a thin film of black Vinyl. Users have been unable to decide whether that is any different in form or function from one strip of Electrical Tape.

Figured I'd share my experience as well. I was cleaning my laptop with an electronic wipe and had the same problem. Very gentle pressure and still I hear a crack. A year or so ago I had the corner of the display crack and I didn't even notice when it happened. Another time I had spiderwebs appear on the screen randomly and had to have it fixed. Can't stress enough that I treat my laptop very carefully. Two of times I didn't even see how the damage happened, it just appeared. Very unhappy with how fragile it is. Wish they would help their customers out with this issue.

The screen doesn’t break so easily that all you have you to is touch it. You’re greatly exaggerating. I clean my screens weekly with light to medium pressure with a lightly moistened microfiber cloth which is normal and I have never experienced a crack. At this point ranting here is not going to help. You’ll have to deal with Apple’s cost or repair the screen yourself.

That sounds exactly like my story. I worked on my Macbook Pro (not even 6 months old) during the day, mind you at my desk, without moving it from one place to another. In the evening I closed it and went out to eat. When I came home about 2 hours later to finish my work, I opened it and, as always, carefully in the front indentation, which is intended to be opened. I noticed a small hairline crack in the lower left corner. When I opened it further, the crack pulled into the middle of the monitor. Note the crack inside the monitor. No defect is visible when the device is switched off. The Macbook did not fall down, nor did I hit it, nor did I drop a heavy object on it. I have purchased 3 MacBooks from Apple in the past 10 years and have never had such problems with the monitors. So I was also very surprised when I saw that. I was in the Apple Store, today I made the third call to the Apple Distribution International Service and they showed my photos to a "technician" and he only said "I dropped it or hit it with something". No insight from Apple or at least a specialist who may disassemble the computer to see if tension cracks are really the reason for this problem. Here in the Apple Forum alone, several people have already reported this problem, which I also told the support several times. Answer from support: Yes, I cannot see these cases now. I just said, "You only need 5 minutes to google, just like me. Then you will find several such cases, also in other forums." I am just very sad and disappointed. A computer worth 3,000 euros and it breaks after less than 6 months and nobody really wants to deal with the problem. And the buyer remains at the expense. Real **** and embarrassing for such a big company! I can understand that there are probably a lot of people who try to put forward other reasons, since it is also their own fault for some people. Therefore, I also suggested that the computer be sent directly to the Apple headquarters in order to rule out any production errors. But I hoped in vain, no insight. Customer service looks different in my eyes. And I have already left 20,000 euros as a private person in the company in 10 years. In the Apple Store in Berlin, 2 people looked at the monitor for 30 seconds and told me it was broken. Yes, my grandma can answer that too. I am the cause, for no reason. Only I can have caused the error. I am a producer and DJ and can only say if I had stood on stage with the device and suddenly the monitor jumps and the computer switches off, it would have been a disaster. It is a pity a pity that the Apple Store, Apple Support and Apple Distribution International Service leave me completely in the rain and come up with flimsy arguments. "The computer fell on the right side and therefore has a tear on the left inside of the monitor." And the joke is that the right side of the monitor is completely intact. But anyway, I'm not giving up and will keep complaining ...

Best regards from a "longstanding customer" ... :-(

Although your argument is interesting, Apple will not argue directly about the way this happened.

Apple's position has always been that glass that passes inspections does not have defects (which would show as visible flaws in the glass). Glass that also passes the practical "stress test" of being shipped from China to you in one piece does not have defects.

Their warranty only covers defects, so it does not matter how it happened.
