Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I came upon this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7995345?page=1) after I too experienced crushing and cracking damage of the logo baffle from something which dropped, unseen, into the “jaws” of the screen-hinging area of my new, 13-inch, 2018 MacBook Air.

Clearly, this is a defect in “materials and workmanship” which subject the MBs to easy accidental damage and, therefore should be covered by the warranty.

  • The material in question is the fragile, glass-like logo baffle which can easily crack and shatter given enough local pressure. Materials with such characteristics should never be used in areas subject to vice-like pressures or, for that matter, normal pressures encountered in screen cleaning. Future designs should mitigate such vice-like mechanics in cover/screen hinging.

  • The workmanship in question is the design of the screen/body hinging, where the space between the screen (and logo baffle ) diminishes as the screen/cover is closed, trapping and crushing anything which has fallen, unnoticed, into the dark, yawning gap, damaging the logo baffle and, possibly, the display screen, too.

As with defective airbags, the manufacturer, i.e., Apple, should be responsible for:

  • Issuing a product warning to all owners of relevant MacBook models regarding this accidental damage vulnerability and measures to take to mitigate such damage*;
  • Developing and offering free replacement of the defective part, one which would not be easily subjected to such damage; and
  • Repairing, at no charge, damaged logo baffles and display screens which have already occurred.

___

*I believe most of us would never have experienced damage if Apple had alerted us to the possibilities of such. We would then have attended to and avoided debris which might easily or otherwise, fall between the cracks with such costly consequences.

You're not alone. Had this happen to my 2018 15" MBP w/ Touch Bar yesterday. Opened my backpack, took it out of the case and immediately noticed a tiny crack near the camera, which slowly enlarged diagonally throughout the day. It's only visible when the MacBook is on, and only very faintly visible near the camera when it's off (see pictures below). I have never been more careful with a product than I have with this MacBook. It didn't look like it had any significant point of impact, therefore it was assumed that "particles of dust or dirt must have slid in between the lids", causing this to happen. I bought this for portability reasons. If this can happen at anytime, despite having it in a case inside my backpack, why go through the trouble of paying for the repair? It's disappointing that this can happen so easily to the most expensive laptop money can buy. I called again and asked if there any way I could get a discount on the $680 quoted, being under warranty still and pretty sure this has to be some kind of Manufacturing Defect on their end, but got quickly denied. I hope this issue creates enough attention to reach higher-tier Apple employees that can do something to resolve this problem. It was frustrating having to repeat myself over and over again at the genius bar and then with Advisors and Customer Relations over the phone. I've also never experienced Genius Bar employees getting agitated at customers so quickly, which leads me to believe that this is not an uncommon thing. We're all truly seeking a fair and adequate resolution to this issue. I had my old r MBP 2013 for 5 years and treated it much more roughly and never had anything like this happen. I finally took it for repair 9 months ago after a little liquid damage and even paid extra to repair the Stain Gate issue (it was past the free repair window at the time). I love Apple products, but it's going to be hard to continue using their notebooks if I'm going to get an Anxiety disorder thinking this might happen again at anytime with any type of mild provocation to the unit. Had I dropped it or caused any type of significant impact, I would take responsibility and pay for the repair in a heartbeat. Apple really needs to reach out to their Quality Control team and have this problem looked at a little closer.

The same probem happened to me. Upon opening of the display, I had no choice but to crack the corner.

This is not accidental but more a design flaw that exposes the display to get punctured by the frame. When the display is air sealed tight with a sheet or paper in between. It will lift the hinges by the thickness of the paper (0.0045") which makes the opening uneven to its ordinary way of opening. Accidental is when you physically throw or drop or put pressure on the product. In this scenario, the product defectively caused the display to crack.

I got the same problem. MacBook Pro 15'' TouchId (2018)

My display cracked "out of the blue" when it was closed.

I was on my desk, MacBook closed on external display. Suddenly the external display went black. I checked to MacBooks Power (because that's the only reason I know why it could disconnect the display) - but nothing. All fine.

I opened the MacBook and I just saw some kind of bluescreen (like windows did) - but more or less a bluescreen with some snowflakes on it - not completely blue. This was all over the internal display.

I shut down the MacBook (hardware button)

I restarted.

I was surprised to see a tiny crack at the bottom right of the display and some colorful lines on the right side.

I didn't disappear after restarting.

Then I shut down again and lifted it up to make some more pictures of it while powered of (there was nothing to see on the display or on the keyboard or at the case)

Then I put it on the desk again, powered on and: .... **** - even more cracks!

It worked a while, but now the screen is completely black and doesn't work at all.

It's still working perfectly when it's connected to an external screen, but still...

It's so strange! And do not have to mention that I am very, very careful with my MacBook. It's THE thing I earn money with and 99% of my work is done on a desk with external screen and closed MacBook. So I do not carry it around a lot, don't open/close it very often.

Luckily I could convince a guy at an Apple Store that this is a true story and they will do it on warranty!

Maybe it helps some of you to have another one here who got the same problem.

Some words for google: Cracks on MacBook without physical impact. Cracked Screen while closed.

Directly after bluescreen and hard shutdown

After lifting it up and make some more pictures while powered of

Nothing, no crack to see at the bottom right corner

I can add - my 2019 Pro after 30 days in home using....

Today...2 months ago i have one crack more - now V shape. I applied piece of screen cover after first crack, but still is cracking.

Still home using - 0% manipulatting. Extremly fragille, worst Pc ever - i prepare some review on youtube and media in Czech republic - it should be "scratch gate".

I would like to start communicate with apple - i think, they ignore this forum.

I'm having this same problem with the 2018 MacBook Pro. Woke up this morning to find a big crack right next the the hinge. Really makes me furious as I know I didn't cause this crack. (I mean come on, it's a $1,500 computer. It's my baby). Luckily I haven't even had this computer for more than a year, so it's covered, but it still makes me furious that it cracks!

I have had the same experience. Bought brand new 2019 MacBook Pro, one day a crack appeared (not sure how perhaps a headphone jack or something) and so I took it to be repaired - $700. After that expense I decided to be extra careful and only use the laptop at home on my desk. Another crack appeared - see pics - and Apple wants another $700. I decided at that point it is an engineering flaw in the design, the glass is unprotected from even the tiniest object. Not only did my screen crack both times but the entire monitor was rendered useless. So now I have converted the laptop to a desktop by connecting a Dell monitor ($400) and keyboard. So for a grand total of $3000 I now have a Mac mini. I have concluded it is not worth spending more money on screen repair as it will only happen again. I have gone back to using my VERY reliable 2010 17" MacBook Pro , a workhorse of a machine. MacBook Pro's have really sacrificed quality for thinness. As far as I can gather people who use MacBook Pro'd don't care that much about how thin it is, rather that it will not cost them $700 to repair every few months.

Some homeowner or renters insurance policies used to offer 'personal articles floater' for additional

items such as electronics; to include damages from indoor and outdoor weather, water pipe breaks,

accidental falls, damp damage, lawn sprinkler on timer, or drop damages to computers, etc.

Maybe that idea got too popular and they shifted the blame to consumers, with higher premiums.

Some EU countries have different wording in consumer protection rules, that may help a few there(?)

If consensus tells you to 'not close the lid of your portable when it safely sits overnight' on table;

since several images & stories here attest as factual, why not leave display open? Or use external

with lid closed all the while? My three mac portables of varying vintage have nice intact displays;

and sport mint condition keyboards. ~ Maybe its the 'touch-bar' making them break premature?!

Thin metal can flex a bit, glass apparently cannot. LOL 🌻😵

That sounds exactly like my story. I worked on my Macbook Pro (not even 6 months old) during the day, mind you at my desk, without moving it from one place to another. In the evening I closed it and went out to eat. When I came home about 2 hours later to finish my work, I opened it and, as always, carefully in the front indentation, which is intended to be opened. I noticed a small hairline crack in the lower left corner. When I opened it further, the crack pulled into the middle of the monitor. Note the crack inside the monitor. No defect is visible when the device is switched off. The Macbook did not fall down, nor did I hit it, nor did I drop a heavy object on it. I have purchased 3 MacBooks from Apple in the past 10 years and have never had such problems with the monitors. So I was also very surprised when I saw that. I was in the Apple Store, today I made the third call to the Apple Distribution International Service and they showed my photos to a "technician" and he only said "I dropped it or hit it with something". No insight from Apple or at least a specialist who may disassemble the computer to see if tension cracks are really the reason for this problem. Here in the Apple Forum alone, several people have already reported this problem, which I also told the support several times. Answer from support: Yes, I cannot see these cases now. I just said, "You only need 5 minutes to google, just like me. Then you will find several such cases, also in other forums." I am just very sad and disappointed. A computer worth 3,000 euros and it breaks after less than 6 months and nobody really wants to deal with the problem. And the buyer remains at the expense. Real **** and embarrassing for such a big company! I can understand that there are probably a lot of people who try to put forward other reasons, since it is also their own fault for some people. Therefore, I also suggested that the computer be sent directly to the Apple headquarters in order to rule out any production errors. But I hoped in vain, no insight. Customer service looks different in my eyes. And I have already left 20,000 euros as a private person in the company in 10 years. In the Apple Store in Berlin, 2 people looked at the monitor for 30 seconds and told me it was broken. Yes, my grandma can answer that too. I am the cause, for no reason. Only I can have caused the error. I am a producer and DJ and can only say if I had stood on stage with the device and suddenly the monitor jumps and the computer switches off, it would have been a disaster. It is a pity a pity that the Apple Store, Apple Support and Apple Distribution International Service leave me completely in the rain and come up with flimsy arguments. "The computer fell on the right side and therefore has a tear on the left inside of the monitor." And the joke is that the right side of the monitor is completely intact. But anyway, I'm not giving up and will keep complaining ...

Best regards from a "longstanding customer" ... :-(
