I had this problem happen on August 18th and found the only way to fix it and make sure the virus is gone. You'll need to have a separate external hard drive big enough to put all the files you don't want to lose on to. I recommend a 2T (terabyte).
I got the notification that my iCloud was being accessed on my iPhone 7 plus when my computer shut down on its own and came back up asking for a 4 digit code and an email saying write to applehelp@caramail.***.
I changed my iCloud password right a way. Called apple and this is the steps I took and will need to be taken to have this whole issue resolved. You will need to call an apple store and make an appointment with them explaining your iCloud has been hacked and that you need to have the firmware code removed. Bring your receipt or a copy of the receipt to the apple store or they will not help you. It should take an hour at most to remove the firmware, and if they tell you that they have to erase your computer, THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BUT IT WILL NEED TO BE DONE AT SOME POINT UNLESS YOU HAVE A LEGIT SOFTWARE THAT CAN REMOVE IT. Once the firmware is unlocked, you may still have it show on your screen or a count down to type in password until the 4 digit code pops back up. This part is important so please follow just as Ive written. Shut down your computer. When you go to turn it back on, THE SECOND you let go of the power button press these 4 keys at the same time:( option, command, r, p) You will hear one chime from the start up, after the second chime let go, and then there will be a third chime. At this point you should be able to get back into the computer. DO NOT use time machine to back up your computer because you will just be saving the virus on to the computer and just repeating the process. Manually move everything you do not want to lose on the external hard drive. After doing so, you will need to erase your computer and reinstall OS software. Now before you start putting stuff back onto your computer from the external hard drive, obtain a safe and legal software that will left you scan the external hard drive to make sure no viruses are on it. I use Avast and that is my go to but the reason it will not able to pick up this virus is accessed through Icloud and not through anything else. (This is what the tech in apple explained to me) I also noticed that people with the two-factor authentication are less likely to have any other files corrupted on the computer and just a firmware lock. The people that do not have this and have security questions only seem to have even files that even after getting back into their computer are still corrupted. To erase my computer, I just googled a how to and 10 million pages popped up. Just make sure to follow them right so you don't erase something you shouldnt have (Like I did and had to call apple support to figure out why a disk was not showing up for me to reinstall OS software on to).
