iOS 11 incredibly slow on iPhone 7 Plus

So frustrated - iOS11 installed perfectly and works great on my iPad Pro. Installed on my iPhone 7plus (with 90GB free space) a few hours later and the phone is essentially unusable. The install went OK but when I click on any app (3rd party or native iOS - like Mail or Messenger) - there is a 20 second delay before the app opens. Unable to make or receive phone calls, texts.

Reset network settings, then all settings, then a complete erase / restore - still slow as Christmas. My phone, at this time, is essentially useless. Google Searches don't show this as a common problem - I'm hoping someone here has experienced this and has a suggestion?

I'll join the choir.
I have the exact same problems on my iPhone 7 (128 GB): Extreme lag, no sound, no vibration. I've tried reinstalling as new phone without it helping. Rolling back to 10.3.3 gave me a working phone again.

Please fix this ASP!

I'd also recommend anyone making an instant judgement about speed wait several hours first.

To make sure functionality is restored as soon as possible after an install, a lot of database updating occurs behind the scenes when the device comes back up that may take a few hours to complete. Those of you with Macs may be familiar with the fact that after you install a new version of macOS, the Spotlight indices must be rebuilt; it's no different in iOS.

While that is going on, performance suffers and battery charge may drop significantly, which is why it's best to always be plugged into a power source when updating.

So, I just talked to a technical advisor from Apple Support and he made me run some tests and diagnostics. First diagnostic didn't reveal any failure or hardware issues, all checked out fine.

The second diagnostic created 100 MB of log files and data, that got transfered to Apple Support and their engineers will look at them.

The support guys told me that they have had some reports of strange behaviour with iOS 11.

So please, if you haven't called Apple Support yet, then do it! Upgrade to iOS 11, call from a different phone and make them run the tests and get the log files etc. Only way to solve this, I guess.

Patrick - this afternoon I went to the place that replaced my screen so we could verify it was a genuine Apple screen. This is a local shop that, over the last 3 years, has replaced thousands and thousands of screens on both iOS and Android phones / tablets. I watch the guy disassemble my phone and we verified is was indeed an original Apple replacement screen. He had been reading about this and at no cost, gave me another replacement screen. I watched him open the genuine Apple packaging and replace the screen. I had my laptop there so we booted up the phone, verified the screen worked, and downloaded the iOS 11.01 update and applied - and got the same problem as before.

Using my laptop I used the same 10.3.3 .ipsw file to revert back and everything worked fine again. And - I was able to restore my 10.3.3 backup (I squirreled it away before my Windows iTunes backed up the 11 environment).

The tech - who knows his stuff - thinks somehow the phone knows it no longer has the original screen. It may be an apple, but somehow it must know it wasn't a genuine apple replacement process? Who knows - but he's the kind of guy who wants to figure it out - he has another customer with the same problem. I'll keep you updated.

I'm in the same boat with an iPhone 7 Plus 128Gb in the UK having carried out every conceivable permutation of reinstall and update to iOS 11.0.0 and 11.0.1 with backups from various iTunes saves as well as iCloud from a complete wipe.

For comparative purposes, mine takes 4.5 minutes to boot up from off and then begins to freeze after two swipes after unlocking. It also has no haptics, vibrate, sound or Siri. I can also neither make nor receive calls.

I've probably spent 8 hours on the phone with a very knowledgeable Apple Customer Service rep and sent two lots of logs via my iMac but all to no avail after almost a week. She said downgrading to iOS wasn't supported by Apple so it sounds as if there's conflicting advice being given about this.

Reading around the forums, the issue isn't restricted to iPhone 7's but there does seem to be a correlation with some, but not all, third party screen replacements. In some case exactly the same issues have been reported with phones that have never been damaged (see above).

One other factor that has been mentioned in a number of cases is how hot the phone got during the reinstall/upgrade. Mine was still bearable to handle but got very warm front and back and wonder whether the update caused a component failure due to heat? However, this seems unlikely if rolling back to iOS10 removes the fault.

Clearly there's an issue affecting a small percentage of users in a variety of countries but there seems to be no common connection, other than the screen issue but only in some cases.

If I don't get a resolution in the next 24 hours I'm going to drive to my nearest Apple Store and try for an over the counter warranty replacement.

Has anyone else anything new to add/suggest?

Which symptoms did you have before?

Similar to these:

- No Sound

- No working microphone (people not able to hear you through the phone)

- No vibration

- Very slow respons when opening apps etc

I talked with Apple Support today and they said that engineers were working on the issue, but they didn't have an answer to when it would be solved - 5 hours later iOS11.0.3 was released! If this is the fix then I'd be very happy!

I have the iPhone 7+. The only problem I was having with the iOS 11 and 11.0.2 upgrade is my phone was brought to a snails pace. It would take as long as 5 minutes+ to open a link in an email, or to surf the Internet. After I posted in several threads here, my phone improved on its own accord. I did restart it several times in the interim. Several days went by before my iPhone’s speed improved, about 5+\-. By the time I downloaded 11.3.0 early yesterday afternoon, my phone was back to normal. I have not yet had any significant problems with the recent download. My iPhone’s speed has slowed once or twice, and it gradually improved after I restarted the phone. Thank you Apple for addressing this issue, as my iPhone was essentially useless for a few days.

To be honest I was actually on the iOS 11 Beta program and had to roll my phone back then because it caused me the exact same issues as we are all seeing now, I was told at the time "wait for a new update and it will fix it"... well that update never came and for some reason I naively thought I wouldn't see the same problem with the official release.

I do agree with you, I can find nothing on the internet about this and have no clue why such an apparently small amount of users are experiencing this, at least in my experience it has happened at different times and completely different OS builds... it appears that my phone just cannot use iOS 11. (Its a 7 plus by the way so I am assuming its not a hardware issue).

Oh yeah don't fall for the re-indexing, my phone was practically bricked for a week because apple told me to wait...

Anyway, I hope your phone carries on working on 10.3.3, if its any small comfort I had no problems whatsoever when I rolled back from the beta.

Expect an update tonight or possibly tomorrow morning regarding my conversation with apple!

I'll add to the list of issues, just tried to play music (from apple music) and got "this operation could not be completed" with "an unknown error occurred (-12746)".

Helpful tip for anyone still having this issue like myself - Instead of tapping each icon and waiting, I've been double tapping the home button and sliding between apps, there's no lag doing that.

Hello Anigoreg,

I don't think anybody here has had this issue resolved without reverting to 10.3.3.

If you are looking for a fast solution this may be the only option, apple are however looking at my case at the moment and should be getting back to me soon, I will be updating this thread with any updates.

Till then good luck, and if its any help double tap the home button and use that app switching technique to get around the lag, outside of that I don't know anything else
