Apple TV 4K bluetooth range diminished

Just received and setup my new Apple TV 4K today. I regularly use AirPods to listen to the TV while moving around the family room and kitchen at night. As soon as I paired my AirPods with the Apple TV I immediately noticed a huge difference in the range and clarity of the audio signal. I would estimate it is at least half the range as with my previous Apple TV (4th gen).

Nothing else has changed in my setup. I just swapped out the Apple TV. Anyone else noticing a difference? Based on specs (and the upgrade to Bluetooth 5.0) the range should have improved.

I believe I fixed my issue...

I had my Apple TV mounted just behind my TV so it was out of site. I tried moving it to well below the TV away from any other devices and it made a big difference. So it does seem that the Apple Remote is susceptible to interference from other devices. My TV is an LG 65UH9500 and has WiFi and BT so that could explain the interference.

This could be related to issues with other BT devices as well.

I found this problem as well, except my trouble was with the Apple Remote (which uses BT). I previously had a 4th Gen Apple TV in the exact same spot and had no problems at all with its remote. When I put the new Apple TV 4K in place, I noticed that the remote actions were "jumpy" and didn't register several taps/swipes and button presses.

I ultimately determined that I was getting BT interference from my AV Receiver, so I turned off the BT function on it (since I never use it anyway) and that has made a world of difference. I realize that this may not be a solution for others, but attempting to minimize line of sight issues and other BT enabled devices may serve as a workaround until the BT signal can be investigated by Apple. I would expect the BT signal to be equal to or surpass the capability of the last gen Apple TV!

Has anyone filed a bug report or feedback on this yet?

I have reported the Bluetooth issue to Apple. A senior advisor is working on it. I even had them look at this thread so I assume your voices are being heard. Anything you post here will probably be helpful to Apple. They are going to call me tonight and follow up on the Bluetooth issue. The senior advisor that was assigned to my case seems very serious about getting this issue resolved.

Ok - an update...

I swapped the first unit for a new one today at the Apple Store. That did not fix the issue. Following some of the feedback in this thread I determined this is definitely some sort of BT interference issue related to my television.

My Apple TV sits on a shelf in a cabinet (technically in the other room) behind my TV. When I'm in front of the TV I have a range of <10 feet for my AirPods, the Siri remote, and any other bluetooth headphones. If I move into an adjacent room (so the TV is not directly between me and the Apple TV) I can get a range of 20-40 feet, with walls and doors in-between. I also tested the issue by moving my AppleTV to a shelf much lower in the cabinet, so that it would physically be lower than the height of my TV. This also solved the problem. It definitely seems to be some sort of issue with interference from the TV. I don't have the ability to discretely disable the BT or WiFi radios on the TV, so I can't test that specifically.

I did call Apple Support and logged a ticket with a senior tech. I gave him all the details and he acknowledged there were other similar reports. So it certainly seems to be something Apple is aware of and working on.

I'm curious if those of you still having this issue are in a similar situation. If you have any other devices with BT or WiFi right next to, or in-between, you and your AppleTV you might want to try moving things around to see if that will fix it. Even if it's not something that is going to work for you long term it would be interesting to know if this is the issue.

...and after a couple of days, the problem re-surfaced today 😠 with no changes in device configuration or placement. Now I'm at a loss to explain.

Data points to consider:

1. I could move the remote around the room and this variable affected how well it registered my commands.

2. Using my iPhone iOS 11 remote control in control center completely eliminates the problem.

Both of these data points indicate the issue seems to be related to interference. Since the BT radio uses the same 2.4Ghz spectrum that WiFi does, I wonder if I'm getting interference from my WiFi access point? I'm not sure I'm willing to disable my 2.4Ghz channel on my WiFi APs to investigate further.

I'm having a similar problem. I swapped out my Apple TV (Version 4) with an Apple TV 4K and the new Siri Remote is unreliable. Even though I'm only about six feet away, the remote is unresponsive and has lost and regained Bluetooth signal multiple times. This leads to slow/erratic swiping. If I use the Apple TV iOS app or Control Panel app it is fast and smooth with no problem. I've tried all the suggested procedures on Apple's support site.

Spoke to someone from Apple's Engineering team today. She gathered lots of information about the issue. So it seems like they are working on it.

Make sure you make the call and log a ticket. This way, if it never gets fixed and you decide a month or so from now that you can't live with you have some documented basis to demand a refund.

I have exactly the same problem and I have reported it to Apple. They didn’t really do anything other than take my details and told me they would contact me as soon as they had a solution. I can cope at the moment because our use my mobile phone to control the Apple TV but if it is not resolved soon I will return it for a replacement.

Give them some time. It is not a hardware issue. It is a software issue. Try turning on the beta program so you will be the first to get any new updates. Apple contacted me a couple times and I provided them with a Ton of diagnostic data. They seemed very concerned and on top of the issue. Just give them a little time.

Reported the fault within the 14 day return period. Chased the call up within the 14 day return period. They called me today (after the 14 day return period) and gave me the option of taking half a day out of my time to go to an Apple store or to be without an Apple TV whilst they repaired it by post. When I asked why they couldn’t just give me a new one, they told me I couldn’t do that because I was now outside of the 14 day return period. Premium price, amateur service.
