iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.


Has anyone else experienced this?

EXACT same issue with my iPhone 8 Plus. It's not as though the mic CANNOT work, because when I switch to speaker phone, I can be a good distance away from the phone and people still hear me. But, when speaker phone is off, my mouth has to be RIGHT next to the speaker. Even the slightest tilt of the phone away from my face makes me unable to be heard, even when speaking loudly. Very frustrating!

I have found if I use a calling app the phone is fine and calls are working as they should. This tells me it’s not a hardware issue rather a software issue. Thinking back I don’t remember my phone doing this until after the update that fixed the crackling sound when on a call, which my phone had that issue. I just wish Apple would acknowledge this issue and get it fixed.

Thanks. Yes, tried all that. Nothing is blocking the mic (I don't use a cover or anything). Mic seems to work fine for voice memo. It also seems fine when using the speakerphone. But in a call, not using the speakerphone, just the slightest movement of the phone away from my mouth and the caller on the other end has trouble hearing me. I've had the iPhone 4s, 5s, 6 and now 8 and have never experienced this. As I said, not isolated to my phone either. My father's phone (new iPhone 8) does the same. He even went to the Apple store and had it replaced, same behavior.

I have the same problem I just got my new 8plus about a week ago and my wife keeps telling me that she can’t hear me when I move it away from my mouth. I called Apple care and the noticed the issue when I was talking to them so they set an appointment for me at the local Apple store when I when to meet the Genius Bar the guy told me that I have to live with it that it must be normal I told him he has to be wrong my wife has a Samsung note5 and she can move the phone up or down and I can hear her with no problems so I think there is an issue with the mic on the iPhone 8 .

I have had the exact same issue with my iPhone 7 as have all my staff(I bought them all an iPhone 7).

I have been looking forward to a new model to be released so I could get rid of my 7, it has been the absolute vain of my existence since I bought it.. I even went to the Genius Bar and while lining up there were three other people in the line complaining of the same issue. When I asked the technician if he had ever heard of the issue that I'm having he replied"Not exactly like that" ( he lied)..they replaced the phone with a new iPhone 7 and I have had the same issue!! go figure!

After reading your complaint re the iPhone 8, I'm not sure what to do!!!

The fundamental basic reason for having a phone is to make calls, everything else is a bonus. Apple needs to get this right...I am now an incredibly unhappy client that has been repeatedly lied to by Apple.

Hi,


Same problem here.

As soon as the voice in the normal bottom microphone get's lower in volume the sound at the receiving side starts to clipp and/or becomes very weak. As soon as you raise your voice to a louder level the sound gets normal again.

Easy test is to put another (receiving) phone (Upside down) on one ear and the Iphone 8 in normal position on the other ear. Make a connection and start speaking/counting loud en than go softer on your voice. At a certain level you will hear that your voice level is suddenly decreasing to a very low level. Keep this level and distance to the microphone while putting the Iphone 8, (the one witch you are calling with) in Speaker mode, you will hear a sudden increase in volume and everything is very clear to hear. As soon as you put the Iphone 8 in normal mode again the sound is very weak again.


I changed my Iphone 8 for a new one and had the same problem, on speaker all is OK but at normal call's low souds levels are clipped.

If you haven't added your Gmail account and enabled contact syncing, you won't see it. It's apparent that you are unfamiliar with how your iPhone works. This would certainly make it frustrating to use. You should really review the manual:

I can confirm this is an issue with iPhone X which I just discovered on my first conference call with it. I do conference calls several times a week and never had this problem with the iPhone 6s this X replaced.


My use case: on the 6s I would plug in earbuds and use the phone's built in mics to do the call. It worked awesome! Tried the same with the IPhone X using a headphone/charge port adapter, same earbuds. I have a quiet office environment from where I make the calls.


My symptoms with the iPhone X:

  1. with earbuds plugged in, people complain they can hardly hear me.
  2. As soon as I unplug the earbuds and use the "speaker" function (from the call screen), everyone says they can hear me normally


Based on the change in audibility transitioning from 1-->2 above, it can't be a hardware issue such as a case. It is either:


  1. there are multiple mics, but some get turned off when earbuds are in for some reason (bug)
  2. as others point out, there maybe something wrong with the noise cancellation which for some reason doesn't happen when in speakerphone mode, but happens when earbuds are plugged in (bug)


This is an impactful problem for me. I use the iphone for business and using earbuds for conference calls lets me hear everything much better than through the speaker, especially with offshore conference calls. If it doesn't get corrected, I need to look at a droid phone if I can exchange or definitely on the next go around. If I keep it, it sounds like I may need to invest in some external hardware because of Apple's software problem. It's disappointing Apple is dismissing this as a case problem. Quality and customer service are falling off ever so slightly year over year.
