iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I found this interesting post on a similar mic issue thread for the iPhone X (thanks to brentwoodkennyg):

I sound muffled or underwater, but only sometimes. Other calls are perfect. Tried all of the fixes in this forum - Network reset, LTE off/on, full reset, wi-fi calls off. Noise cancellation off. With and without cover. Got a replacement phone from the Apple store. None of it helped and now I know why...

The issue turned out to be how I was holding the phone. There are three microphones on the X and one of them is located by the camera on the back of the phone. Even though I didn't cover it while holding the X (with fingers and thumb on the sides of the phone, I apparently was close enough to make that mic behave differently. When I move my phone-holding position in the same grip to the bottom part of the phone, the problems vanish. I have run through a series of test with my "complainers" and this seems to pinpoint the root cause. It's either user error or a design flaw, but there is a simple workaround. Hold the phone at the bottom of the case and definitely not near the top. Problem Solved!

Update as to why this works: Apple has designed noise cancellation into the talking side of the phone. (This is different than the noise cancellation in the Accessibility settings - those are for the listening not speaking). Anyway, there is a small mic on the back of the X by the camera. It's purpose is to listen for ambient noise (think crowded bar) and to cancel that noise from what it hears from the mics on the front at bottom of the phone. Those mics hear your voice talking plus they hear the ambient noise (crowded bar). The software "subtracts" the bar sound from what it hears on the front and the listener never hears the bar noise - just your voice. (You can test this by completely covering the back mic hole with your finger - then the listener hears the bar noise and has trouble hearing your voice).

Anyway, this is a really great feature - except that if you hold the phone near the top, it channels part of your voice into that back mic and it ends up canceling out all or part of your voice. So I have to hold my phone at the bottom and things work fine. This also explains problems with folding phone cases and issues when you are holding the phone between neck and shoulder.

Hi,

Same problem here.

As soon as the voice in the normal bottom microphone get's lower in volume the sound at the receiving side starts to clipp and/or becomes very weak. As soon as you raise your voice to a louder level the sound gets normal again.

Easy test is to put another (receiving) phone (Upside down) on one ear and the Iphone 8 in normal position on the other ear. Make a connection and start speaking/counting loud en than go softer on your voice. At a certain level you will hear that your voice level is suddenly decreasing to a very low level. Keep this level and distance to the microphone while putting the Iphone 8, (the one witch you are calling with) in Speaker mode, you will hear a sudden increase in volume and everything is very clear to hear. As soon as you put the Iphone 8 in normal mode again the sound is very weak again.

I changed my Iphone 8 for a new one and had the same problem, on speaker all is OK but at normal call's low souds levels are clipped.

i have found a solution.

the back microphone near the rear camera lense is being blocked more than likely by your phone case if you have a folding phone case, if you remove it or prevent it from blocking it then it will be working fine.

I tried it and it's extremely fine. this guy initially posted his finding and it turned out to be the case for me.

Quoting him "Okay I had the same problem and I went to the Apple genius bar tonight. What the genius spotted was the wallet case that I am using folds back onto the back microphone when you’re talking on the phone this microphone apparently used for noise reduction and causes it to go immediately muffled sound when you talk on the phone.... Without the case closed over itself at the back it works perfectly. So in might account for some of your problems because mine was exactly the same worked on loudspeaker worked on the headset but was muffled on the microphone...therefore causing this problem. But I think it’s intermittent because the way I hold the phone it’s not always the same and sometimes the back microphone the one near the camera would be exposed and sometimes it would be closed over with the back cover. I took the cover off and guess what it works perfectly. Every time I gave it to Apple to check I took the phone out of the case and gave them the raw phone so it took awhile for them to work out that I actually had a case. Hope this helps everyone. "

let me know if this works.

Yup. I now have 5 iPhone 8’s one is worse than the other. 3/5 bad mic. Nobody hears me. Unless you screem directly in the mic. I did a test. Call it with another phone, lay the iPhone down, mute the phone your calling it from, brush or rub the 2 mic holes right next to the charger port. One side will emit sound and one won’t. Then wait a second, do that again, and the other side won’t work. Very very hard to tell if it’s ios11.x.x.........5 8’s??? All the same? All out of the box?? Hmm odd.

After 9 days of troubleshooting and tear downs, and 5 of the same phones, I feel it’s a possible software settle/installation that only affects certain 8 models along with the plus and X... it’s not clear what or why this happens 8/10 times no matter what is done to the phone. From my experience and testing 5 phones, it seems intermittent but all the time. Some are worse than others. 2or 3 can work normal for 1 minute then fade out because the dual microphone has a hard time transferring from one side to the other.... if you talk on the left side, its faint. If you talk on the right side its clear and vice versa. Putting on speakerphone then off, fixes but only for seconds. This issue will go for more thorough tes

I have found if I use a calling app the phone is fine and calls are working as they should. This tells me it’s not a hardware issue rather a software issue. Thinking back I don’t remember my phone doing this until after the update that fixed the crackling sound when on a call, which my phone had that issue. I just wish Apple would acknowledge this issue and get it fixed.

The problem is so intermittent you think you fixed it but then it comes back. Right now after putting in the big update from apple our two phones are working right (1 1/2 days). We have carefully eliminated the case as a problem, (mic still failed with case off) but each case is different so you need to test your case making sure it does not cover the mic in back, the two on the base or the one by the ear speaker. We replaced one of the two phones with another brand new one to no effect, using compressed air gently blew out the grills on the bottom mic. Replaced our old SIM cards with new ones. So we just keep hoping the upgrade holds.

After 3 new Iphones 8 and a new SIM card and no cover the microphone problem still exists.

On speaker mode all is OK but making a "normal" call the receiver hears a muffled, fading voice level.

Something to do with software choice of which microphone to use when calling.

I think the Iphone 8 has 3 microphones and the software decides which one to use in according to the input level of the 3 different microphones. In speaker mode this microphone switching goes OK but a a normal call the software fails
