iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this?

iPhone 8, iOS 11.0.2

I found this interesting post on a similar mic issue thread for the iPhone X (thanks to brentwoodkennyg):

I sound muffled or underwater, but only sometimes. Other calls are perfect. Tried all of the fixes in this forum - Network reset, LTE off/on, full reset, wi-fi calls off. Noise cancellation off. With and without cover. Got a replacement phone from the Apple store. None of it helped and now I know why...

The issue turned out to be how I was holding the phone. There are three microphones on the X and one of them is located by the camera on the back of the phone. Even though I didn't cover it while holding the X (with fingers and thumb on the sides of the phone, I apparently was close enough to make that mic behave differently. When I move my phone-holding position in the same grip to the bottom part of the phone, the problems vanish. I have run through a series of test with my "complainers" and this seems to pinpoint the root cause. It's either user error or a design flaw, but there is a simple workaround. Hold the phone at the bottom of the case and definitely not near the top. Problem Solved!

Update as to why this works: Apple has designed noise cancellation into the talking side of the phone. (This is different than the noise cancellation in the Accessibility settings - those are for the listening not speaking). Anyway, there is a small mic on the back of the X by the camera. It's purpose is to listen for ambient noise (think crowded bar) and to cancel that noise from what it hears from the mics on the front at bottom of the phone. Those mics hear your voice talking plus they hear the ambient noise (crowded bar). The software "subtracts" the bar sound from what it hears on the front and the listener never hears the bar noise - just your voice. (You can test this by completely covering the back mic hole with your finger - then the listener hears the bar noise and has trouble hearing your voice).

Anyway, this is a really great feature - except that if you hold the phone near the top, it channels part of your voice into that back mic and it ends up canceling out all or part of your voice. So I have to hold my phone at the bottom and things work fine. This also explains problems with folding phone cases and issues when you are holding the phone between neck and shoulder.

Re iPhone 8+ mic problems.

I asked Apple chat to help me find the USER manual, not the safety, warranty, regulatory manual which to me is worthless for my purposes although easy to find on Apple. However the USER manual is much more difficult to find, took the apple chat person 5 min to find it, then she sent a link, which I tried to paste here but the second I pasted it, it disappeared immediately. I tried to help y'all out but apple would not let me. Anyway the USER manual she finally retrieved was an older version that did not list the 8+ iPhone I bought - chat person said Apple had not updated the manual... go figure and typical! I only wanted to know the location of the microphone, turns out there appears to be 3 microphones.

The User manual is three four clicks from this page if you start by clicking on "Support" at the top of the page:

My actions:

Step 1; yesterday I called apple support and registered my defect and complaint. Certainly they acted like they have never heard of this problem!

Step 2; I will excise the the warranty and exchange as many phones as necessary to get one that works.

Step 3; I am researching cheap, throw away, non-apple phone options.

Step 4; I've disavowed apple period. Not fully developed products when rolled out, warranty too short, much too expensive products and services, friendly but inept customer support.

I Highly doubt it will fix it!! We all have been dealing with this garbage of a new Iphone 8 Plus and Iphone X for Months now with zero fix. Not sure what Apple's problem is and when we have spent 1,000.00 of dollars for something that doesnt even work like a normal simple phone! Again, I'm Done with Apple. So sick of the big boys ignoring all of us who have made them wealthy beyond wealthy! They dont care one bit about us and these issues. Even the Apples stores are not acknowledging these issues. Switching to Samsung !!! Now thats a configurable phone. Try typing in a new contact into your iphone under contacts and have it sync with you Gmail contacts. Yea , Right!! Samsung, you can choose and you can have options to customize apps and all sorts of options. Kicking the rotten Apple to the curb. Apple better figure this stuff out and get back to where Steve Jobs thought about customer service.

I am having a similar issue with my iphone 8. No one can hear me while on a phone call unless I switch to speaker phone. I had this same problem with multiple 5s models. Seems apple still hasn't fixed this very fundamental problem. I am probably going to switch to android because every Iphone I have ever had has been a piece of garbage. My iphone 7 was by far the biggest piece of junk I ever shelled out almost 1k for. Apple doesnt give a **** because they make a ton of money either way. They have no incentive to make quality products because people are willing to spend a thousand dollars on one of their phones because its sleek and it has the apple logo on the back. I cannot express how disgusted I am with this company and the qaulity of their product. I would advise anyone reading this to switch to another phone like samsung or something. Prove me wrong apple.

Thanks for your all of your insights and suggestions. Yes, I totally agree with everyone!. I just received my 3rd replacement iPhone 8 Plus last week and yep, you all guessed it, same issues. Even when I was talking with a tech from Verizon, they said , wow, I cant hear you and then when i put it on speaker, they even said, you sound like you are in a tunnel. So they heard first hand from Verizon. I wont go to an Apple store and sit and discuss this for 2 hours. No way! I've read every single post here and you all have done your due diligence and have helped me make my decision! 2 weeks ago, I sold my Apple Watch Series 2, 42mm and yesterday, I called Verizon (Do Not go to the Verizon Stores, call into Verizon-they can work with you better, trust me). So I called Verizon and said I am done with APPLE period, this piece of crap iPhone isnt a phone, its a device i can email, surf internet and text from, thats it. I do not want it!!! So, I'm doing the Edge Up program and getting out of this iPhone 8 Plus and YEP, getting into the New Samsung S9 Plus!!!! Such a better phone. I dont have it yet but with that and the Samsung Frontier Gear 3 Smartwatch, I'll be Way, Way, Happier. Apple isnt going to fix these issues, you all watch, they wont!! Samsung thinks outside the box and is such a better phone that is way more configurable. I plan on going to Youtube or Google to figure how to do things on this new phone! I've already started looking. The Samsung can do so many cool things and everything is related to Google. I'm So, So Sick of iTunes and how we all have to be tied to iTunes to do anything and back these iPhones up and restore. So, Best of Luck to you all and hopefully Apple will fix the issues but I'm done holding my breathe and paying for a Lemon of a Phone!!! I told Verizon that as well. So do call into your carriers and they will help you. Apple Out, Samsung In !!

I think you are doing the right thing buying a S9.

When you buy an expensive phone which is not capable of making a normal call and the producer of the phone can not fix the problem what are the options?

I saw you will get about $ 400,- in return for your Iphone 8 when buying a S9.

Still a loss of $ 500,- but better than having a bad phone.

I think I will do the same and I wonder what Steve would have said about these problems not being fixed.

Looks to me very easy for a programmer to put the code in that when making a normal call it has to use the lower microphone, how hard can it get ?

Perhaps you should see my fancy iphone, settings, contacts, Zero mention of any default setting for gmail. Zero option. iphone 8 plus , brand new replacement . If it was there i would use it. All i have is : siri, sort order, display order, short name, my info. Thats all that is visible

If you haven't added your Gmail account and enabled contact syncing, you won't see it. It's apparent that you are unfamiliar with how your iPhone works. This would certainly make it frustrating to use. You should really review the manual:

I did take note of the suggestion to work with the carrier and like this idea, believe it has potential to help me resolve my problem probably at the lowest cost to me; thank you! Only to know, I also got burned on a $2500, late 2016 build, Mac book pro that failed catastrophically to the tune of $650 for repairs, just 70 days past the 1 year warranty thru no fault of my own - the right fan failed and wiped out the logic board. Yep had to pay out of pocket for this, absolutely no consession on apples part - not a happy camper. Especially as my other Mac book pro, a late 2011 build, paid $1199, is still working flawlessly. So the apple product and brand has diminished drastically in the last 5 years or so, when it's time for a new laptop, I'll be buying an $800 PC based throw a way. Not an overpriced, predetermined obsolesce, rotten apple. and to find out that the late 2016 Mac book pro has a glued in battery, sure it can be unglued and removed, but it's a toxic nightmare and the process and chemicals should be banned by the EPA. and ...for strike three, my daughter's iPhone 7 screen locked up and would take no input no matter what, apple "Genius Bar support" a real oxymoron, and phone support was of absolutely no help. Cost us a replacement phone, again, the 7 was a few months out of the 1 year warranty.

my entire family is now thoroughly appalled at these experiences; apple will sell no more of anything in this household period, but it's clear, they could care less!
