iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I found this interesting post on a similar mic issue thread for the iPhone X (thanks to brentwoodkennyg):

I sound muffled or underwater, but only sometimes. Other calls are perfect. Tried all of the fixes in this forum - Network reset, LTE off/on, full reset, wi-fi calls off. Noise cancellation off. With and without cover. Got a replacement phone from the Apple store. None of it helped and now I know why...

The issue turned out to be how I was holding the phone. There are three microphones on the X and one of them is located by the camera on the back of the phone. Even though I didn't cover it while holding the X (with fingers and thumb on the sides of the phone, I apparently was close enough to make that mic behave differently. When I move my phone-holding position in the same grip to the bottom part of the phone, the problems vanish. I have run through a series of test with my "complainers" and this seems to pinpoint the root cause. It's either user error or a design flaw, but there is a simple workaround. Hold the phone at the bottom of the case and definitely not near the top. Problem Solved!

Update as to why this works: Apple has designed noise cancellation into the talking side of the phone. (This is different than the noise cancellation in the Accessibility settings - those are for the listening not speaking). Anyway, there is a small mic on the back of the X by the camera. It's purpose is to listen for ambient noise (think crowded bar) and to cancel that noise from what it hears from the mics on the front at bottom of the phone. Those mics hear your voice talking plus they hear the ambient noise (crowded bar). The software "subtracts" the bar sound from what it hears on the front and the listener never hears the bar noise - just your voice. (You can test this by completely covering the back mic hole with your finger - then the listener hears the bar noise and has trouble hearing your voice).

Anyway, this is a really great feature - except that if you hold the phone near the top, it channels part of your voice into that back mic and it ends up canceling out all or part of your voice. So I have to hold my phone at the bottom and things work fine. This also explains problems with folding phone cases and issues when you are holding the phone between neck and shoulder.

I’ll say it another 100 times. It’s software affecting the hardware. Every single iPhone running iOS 11, will have this issue. It all depends on how the device took in the update back in sept. That’s why most complaints are involving devices installed with 11.x.x. This problem happened in the launch of 11 and ALL DEVICES ARE AFFECTED. I own 5 8’s and only 1 has no microphone problems. I noticed the issue when 3 different people couldn’t hear me for s**t no matter how loud I talked. It’s a sensitivity issue that ties with the software. And no. Sorry. Apple is unaware of this because they’re focusing on more emojis than the actual phone itself. I’m level 10 by the way. Not 1

I have an iphone 8 Plus, which is a little bigger, running IOS 11.2.2. No one can hear me during a regular call. When I switch to speakerphone they can hear me fine. I tried both suggestions on page **10** of this thread (attention, Apple -- fix this problem!!) and neither worked. The two suggested fixes were (1) Go to Settings / Privacy / Microphone and switch Off all the green switches. Did this, and people still can't hear me on a regular call. I also tried suggestion (2) which is go to Settings / General / Accessibility and turn Off Phone Noise Cancellation. This also did not work for me.

I have this same problem Apple tech agreed that I sound like I was in a tunnle and I was sitting still not moving full bars holding the phone like I have since my first iphone the iphone 3. Apple gave me a new phone still happens people everyday all day long say they can not hear me. My only work around is to use speaker phone. The microphone works great on Voicememos and other tests. I have tried turning off noise cancellation still same thing.

They gave me a new phone to try to fix. The tech on phone agreed with how I sounded, after a factory reset did not work they said to make an appointment at the genius bar where the tech there gave me a new phone. Problem is still happing but they are trying big time. Now we are testing turning off noise cancellation and revisted after using for a week or two. It might have fixed the problem, but only 3 days into my using with noise cancellation off. Thus far I have not yet had someone say I sound like I am in a tunnle.

I’m on my second iPhone 8 in 4 weeks both have the poor sound quality for the recipient. Muffled woolly taking with your head inside a fish tank have all been given by people I’m calling, as well as fading in and out. The new replacement phone sent to me by Very is actually worse than the phone I returned. I’ve rang Apple countless times and done everything they suggested and still the same sound issues. I’m currently waiting for an engineer’s result of call logs downloaded from my phone. Yes the Apple staff are polite and say all the right things such taking ownership but this far it’s only lip service. I’m lucky that I still have a few days to return this phone for a refund which looks highly likely as Apple seem unable to resolve it. Currently looking at replacing the iPhone with a Samsung.

Hello,

I thought my third new Iphone 8 was without the microphone problem but I was wrong.

People still say they are having trouble hearing me with normal phone calls.

It is sure that is has something to do with the way that the software chooses which of the three microphones to use when making a call.

After several updates the problem is still there, and I am making all my phone calls in speaker mode.

Hope there will be a good solution from Apple soon for this problem.

Staff at the Apple store now know me by the name of "reload" girl. I literally am still having to treat my iPhone as a wi controller (moving it flat then back up again or "reloading") to get a call back in line after my voice starts to fade. They insist it's a coincidence but it works every time. I have to do it once a minute. Also using the earphones helps a lot, but it still happens. Last time I went in they reset my phone thinking it must be something in the way the phone was set up and data transfer since its happened to the last THREE PHONES i've returned since 2/6/18. They have a 4th phone on hold for me at the store waiting for me in case this "fix" didn't work. Its like they know I'm gonna keep coming back and they dont want to talk to me about it anymore - They just keep giving me new phones and no fix ever works across 3 new phones in 8 weeks has worked. I'm hard headed and optimistic. I'm going to try again.

I'm sure there are so many customers in that same boat. Not knowing its some big old issue with Apple, that isnt going to get fixed by them... If you are not leaving Apple or cant or dont want to do the Edge Up program (Verizon has this option), which allows you to get out of your phone. You do have to pay the rest of your contract if you are not quite to the 12 month payments made. Make sure you get a replacement phone and complain big time to them. But call your carrier, dont go into a store front of your carrier. Talk to Tech Support and not Sales. Use the phone and talk like normal and not on speaker phone and they will hear the issue, trust me, my Verizon Rep sure did and she couldnt believe it. I said, i've been fighting this for 4 months now. Tell them you want a replacement phone Now. Hopefully it will be a better phone but my 3 replacement ones sure were not! So, I switched to Samsung last week!!!
