iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this?

EXACT same issue with my iPhone 8 Plus. It's not as though the mic CANNOT work, because when I switch to speaker phone, I can be a good distance away from the phone and people still hear me. But, when speaker phone is off, my mouth has to be RIGHT next to the speaker. Even the slightest tilt of the phone away from my face makes me unable to be heard, even when speaking loudly. Very frustrating!

Hi all

I've been in IT for 20 years. Just gave my son an iphone 8 for Christmas and it had the "mic issue."

Read through the forums and this isn't a hardware issue. Process of elimination makes it clear it's affecting too many diverse pieces of equipment and different equipment batches to be a hardware problem. Further - the problem only exists on the Apple Phone app. 3rd party apps don't have the issue using the same physical hardware, case, etc.

It's a software issue. Having been in networking and Cisco IPT for a long time - listened carefully during test calls and the voice was clear if shouting or in loud environments but crappy in quiet or normal environments. This points to one thing - noise cancellation and an overaggressive codec involved. Cisco had a similar problem a few years back when they introduced a new HD codec.

Solution - upgraded to the latest 11.2.x release and turned off noise cancellation in Settings > General > accessibility

Instantly the crappy mic worked perfect. Being that it is a software bug -- it's possible that the codec might drift and the crappy mic comes back. In that case you might have to turn noise cancellation back on for a few minutes and then off again -- or reboot your phone.

It's a pain but I can tell you as an IPT professional -- I'm 100% sure this is a software bug.

Apple -- I know you are reading this -- get your engineers to fix it. Please.

If you read through this entire discussion group, the issue is affecting iPhone 7's, 8's and X's

It's affecting people across multiple regions of the world. It's affecting those on iOS 11 specifically.

All that adds up to it's not hardware -- it's statistically too broad -- it's software as previously described... a misprogramed driver, codec, etc that is overaggressive on noise cancellation. Turning off noise cancellation and updating to the latest iOS seems to resolve it in a workaround way.

Interestingly before iOS 11 the default was to have noise cancellation turned off. In iOS 11 the default was to have it turned on

If you are reading everything you will see that updates and noise cancellation adjustments don’t work. The other microphones work better than the main apple microphone but it is because of software not hardware

I have the exact same problem but mine goes even further. My mic doesn't work on speaker phone at all. No one can hear can hear anything when I am on speaker. This also affects social apps like Snapchat, no audio when take a video. Apple has replaced my phone 3 times and at first the speaker phone works fine but then when I upgrade to 11.2 it stops working. My latest backup was done on 11.2 so I am stuck with no speaker or losing all of my data.

My exact thoughts as well. Sure havent seen or heard of Apple reaching out to all of us who do have New Iphones 8, 8Plus and X's to make this right. They have just taken our money and ran. They need to quit using Cheap China crap in their massively expensive phones!! Can u imagine the profit on each phone! I'm on my second one and ready to call in and get a third but the more posts i read, it seems it wont to a bit of good.............Come on Apple, figure this out and Make it Right!!!!!!!!!! Or you will be losing a lot of Customers over to Samsung

Same here, on my second Iphone 8 Plus and this is getting totally ridiculous! You read the article in TIME ? Quote " Apple confirms all macs adn ios devices are affected by the meltdown chip flaw. Slowing down these products and devices. Nice Apple. Ever since Steve Jobs past, Apple has slipped big time!!!!!!!! They claim they are working on an update for this issue. Wonder if its effecting our current phones with the mic. On my phone i am experiencing what you are and when i go to text a picture to someone there is such a delay after i tap the text icon, its ridiculous. My previous iphone 6 didnt have this issue. Is the issue with the mic, a software or hardware issue? I'm hearing both. Apple needs to Fix this Immediately!!!! These phones are not Cheap!!

Same problem here. Getting fed up trying to shout so people can hear. My voice seems to cut out when I move my phone about when talking. Mic has to be sooo close to mouth or other person keeps asking if I’m still there. Getting fed up using this device as an actual phone. Had none of this with my old iPhone 6s! Very disappointing. Please rectify this Apple!

I too am having this problem with my 8 Plus. No one can hear me if I speak normally into the phone. I have to use speakerphone or bluetooth headphones. If Apple is aware of this software problem, are they going to fix it? It's an annoying problem and it sounds like it affects most every iPhone. I love my phone though and will just work around if they can't fix it.
