iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I found this interesting post on a similar mic issue thread for the iPhone X (thanks to brentwoodkennyg):

I sound muffled or underwater, but only sometimes. Other calls are perfect. Tried all of the fixes in this forum - Network reset, LTE off/on, full reset, wi-fi calls off. Noise cancellation off. With and without cover. Got a replacement phone from the Apple store. None of it helped and now I know why...

The issue turned out to be how I was holding the phone. There are three microphones on the X and one of them is located by the camera on the back of the phone. Even though I didn't cover it while holding the X (with fingers and thumb on the sides of the phone, I apparently was close enough to make that mic behave differently. When I move my phone-holding position in the same grip to the bottom part of the phone, the problems vanish. I have run through a series of test with my "complainers" and this seems to pinpoint the root cause. It's either user error or a design flaw, but there is a simple workaround. Hold the phone at the bottom of the case and definitely not near the top. Problem Solved!

Update as to why this works: Apple has designed noise cancellation into the talking side of the phone. (This is different than the noise cancellation in the Accessibility settings - those are for the listening not speaking). Anyway, there is a small mic on the back of the X by the camera. It's purpose is to listen for ambient noise (think crowded bar) and to cancel that noise from what it hears from the mics on the front at bottom of the phone. Those mics hear your voice talking plus they hear the ambient noise (crowded bar). The software "subtracts" the bar sound from what it hears on the front and the listener never hears the bar noise - just your voice. (You can test this by completely covering the back mic hole with your finger - then the listener hears the bar noise and has trouble hearing your voice).

Anyway, this is a really great feature - except that if you hold the phone near the top, it channels part of your voice into that back mic and it ends up canceling out all or part of your voice. So I have to hold my phone at the bottom and things work fine. This also explains problems with folding phone cases and issues when you are holding the phone between neck and shoulder.

I upgraded my wife from the iphone 6 to the 8 and then myself to the X when it came out. EVERYONE she talks to has trouble hearing her with the same issues in this thread. The case is NOT the issue. Since calls seem to work okay with headphones or speakerphone, I'm inclined to believe it is a software issue. The fact that Apple has so far refused to acknowledge this issue should have Steve Jobs rolling over in his grave. This is just flat out horrible. We switched from Android when the 6/6+ came out. We just might have to go back to android after we pay these phones off (which will be another 2 years).

This issue should be clearly (pun intended) obvious to anyone who has extensive IT experience. All other possibilities have been exhausted by this community. If Apple isn't willing to accept that this issue exists in their software, then they have bigger leadership and culture issues to deal with that will damage their reputation long term.

I have the exact same problem but mine goes even further. My mic doesn't work on speaker phone at all. No one can hear can hear anything when I am on speaker. This also affects social apps like Snapchat, no audio when take a video. Apple has replaced my phone 3 times and at first the speaker phone works fine but then when I upgrade to 11.2 it stops working. My latest backup was done on 11.2 so I am stuck with no speaker or losing all of my data.

Same problem here. Getting fed up trying to shout so people can hear. My voice seems to cut out when I move my phone about when talking. Mic has to be sooo close to mouth or other person keeps asking if I’m still there. Getting fed up using this device as an actual phone. Had none of this with my old iPhone 6s! Very disappointing. Please rectify this Apple!

I too am having this problem with my 8 Plus. No one can hear me if I speak normally into the phone. I have to use speakerphone or bluetooth headphones. If Apple is aware of this software problem, are they going to fix it? It's an annoying problem and it sounds like it affects most every iPhone. I love my phone though and will just work around if they can't fix it.

My wife’s iPhone 8, 3 weeks old is doing the same thing. 7/10 calls, I can barely hear her or the sound breaks up. She switches to speakerphone and I can hear her fine. Tried all suggestions on this post and it still keeps happening. Was about to take it to apple for exchange, but it looks like the problem is happening even with folks who have exchanged their phones. Any solution ????

I’m the one who suggested to shut off all the green switches on microphone privacy. It only seemed to help for one day. Apple finally convinced me to get a new phone even though this thread advised me not to.

They also told me not to restore when I get the new phone. They wanted to see if the problem still persisted before the restore. That method would be able to pinpoint the problem

My wife is having the exact same issue with her iPhone 6. Her voice is VERY faint when using her phone normally, but her voice is at good levels if using ear buds or speakerphone. Her case leaves the mIc at the bottom fully free and the mic at the top fully free as well. She is on OS 11.1.2. I'm now going to upgrade her iPHone 6 to 11.2.2 to see if that makes a difference..............While I'm waiting for the upgrade, I'll vent a little. Apple is no longer a start-up and customers can't be expected to give it the benefit of the doubt in these issues. It needs to acknowledge when there is an issue (Transparency), as in this case and not expect customers to go for days and weeks wondering if it's their fault (eg wrong case) or thinking it's just an issue with their phone.....................I've now had the time to vent a lot more on the issue while waiting for the upgrade and delete my the balance of the vent 🙂.

I'll post again when I have the results.

Same issue. Just spent 2 hours at the Apple store tonight swapping the iPhone 8 for a new iPhone 8, and the same speaker issue exists on the new phone. Apple "Geniuses" pretended like they had never heard of this issue before, so we pointed them to this 11 page thread. I might just contact my credit card company and stop payment on the phone. It doesn't work unless the microphone is directly aimed at my lips. a slight movement causes the listener to think I stepped into a cave. At first, the apple store said "the diagnostics are fine" until we offered to have a call on the spot with them, which immediately produced a replacement to a new phone with the identical issue.

Yes big delays all over- sending pics, in several apps, going talk to task. The camera slow to respond, sending etc etc etc Of course the mic on the $1,049 256gb...... I just got off the phone now, half the convo was me repeating myself. My caller kept saying what happened? I can’t hear you. Sounds like your in a train, tunnel, bathroom, muffled.. No acknowledgement or promise that a fix is in the works. Sad.
