Apple TV 4K Netflix No Video

Apple TV 4k, Netflix: Audio only, no Video. restored ATV to factory, reinstalled NF app, cable is compliant, AVR settings and TV settings ok as no issue in other apps. Worked fine until today. OS 11.1. everything has been reset, reinstalled, rebooted, and reconnected. Any ideas? NF works fine through the app on the TV as well as the app on the cable box.

I had the exact same problem with the Apple TV 4k (OS 11.1, most recent update)

TV: Hisense 55H9B2 4k curved tv

Cable: Apple-recommended Belkin Ultra HDMI cable

(plus about 6 other 18Gbps cables I bought from Monoprice for much less)

All YouTube 4k content played fine, and I could play 4k movies from iTunes with no problems. Netflix would allow me to browse the content, but when I played 4k videos I would hear sound and could see the UI elements but the video stream was a green screen. When I played regular 1080P content the screen was black, but I could hear sound and see UI.

The Apple TV 4k automatically chose 4k SDR, and would not switch to any other output resolutions. I called Netflix and Apple trying to troubleshoot, but neither could find a solution except to point out that it seems like an HDCP 2.2 issue and to try upgrading my cable. I tried 7 difference cables, including the recommended one from Belkin.

I finally found a post on Amazon for my TV which mentioned that my TV firmware needed an update. The TV's online firmware update feature returned nothing, but I knew mine was the oldest shipped for this TV. Thankfully, someone posted the most recent firmware file on Amazon. I updated via flash drive, and suddenly the Apple TV 4k asked to upgrade the display output to 4k 60Hz HDR. After I changed the output, Netflix started displaying all videos properly.

Check for a firmware update for your television.

For reference for anyone with the Hisense 55H9B2 TV, I upgraded from F1211 to H0117 in order to enable 4k 60Hz HDR (https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R24J42DVDCE5FM/ref=cm_cr_getr_d_rvw_t tl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00ZGIJDOU).

Thanks for the suggestion. I doubt it's a timing issue though, because I usually turn the TV on first and then the AppleTV. I haven't changed how I turn it on but the issue still happens. I appreciate all of the research and effort everyone is putting in. If only Apple spent as much time trying to identify the issue as we all are.

I was just talking to an Apple Advisor and he will be escalating the issue to an engineer. He will call me back on Monday. In the meantime he said that it was fine to try out the latest beta - tvOS 11.2.5. He also said that with the Apple 4K you cannot go back to a previous tvOS version.

BTW, apart fromNetflix/Amazon this issue is not impacting YouTube and some other third-party apps that I have.

Yesterday I had a meeting with Apple genius bar. They opened the Apple TV 4K and made a „complete“ reset of firmware (comparable to loading a complete new firmware on Apple TV 4 by using an usb cable and iTunes).

Now I am on 10.2.1 but the issue is not solved. Tomorrow I will get another Apple TV 4k from a friend to test it, but unfortunately it is not on OS 11.0 😟 For me I want to try if it’s a hardware problem or not.

I will inform you if I have news...

I have a Philips 65pus7601 4k tv and have no problems with the build in netflix app.

Also no issues using my sony ubp-x800 uhd player and starting the same movie in netflix from the build in netflix app of the sony.

Playing the same movie via netflix on the apple tv 4k with the same hdmi cable and port gives a horrible picture with lots of color banding and worse colors overall.

So for me its clear that something goes wrong in te apple tv with the hdr or dolby vision signal of netflix.

Nothing yet and I do not think that I will get a reply - from what they told me, if there is an issue they will fix it and issue a patch or notify Netflix and tell them to fix their app.

I am also waiting fro the next patch from Sony - wonder if their latest patch in November did not break something in the HDCP handshake.

Yep - very frustrating - a lot of people have this issue. I also asked the Apple technician to check this thread - sent him the link...

I am using a Samsung TV with an Apple TV 3 and it seems that I have the same issues as describe here. Here is a details list of the issues I am encountering:

  • When running anything on Netflix I have no video, just audio and subtitles. I also can't pause the video when is running by pressing the touch pad of remote.
  • For me Amazon Prime Video app is also not working, but different behaviour: Nothing is started, it just remains stuck with the black screen. (Also the loading icon is stuck).

I tried restarting Apple TV, but no success. I haven't tried yet to restore to factory settings yet. Waiting to see if anybody finds the real issue we are all encountering.

Thanks, that’s what I thought. This isn’t a problem specific to Netflix or to the 4K model. It’s a problem with both models of the Apple TV and with certain types of content of which Netflix is just one, although probably the most popular.

I wonder which version of tvOS this started with. I first noticed it in mid-November but I hadn’t watched much in the preceding month, and this thread started on October 11. tvOS 11.0 was released on Sept. 19 and 11.1 was Oct 31. If the problem started with 11.0 then I’m surprised there haven’t been more complaints. Of course it could have nothing to do with tvOS itself and could be due to something else.
