Apple TV 4K Netflix No Video

Apple TV 4k, Netflix: Audio only, no Video. restored ATV to factory, reinstalled NF app, cable is compliant, AVR settings and TV settings ok as no issue in other apps. Worked fine until today. OS 11.1. everything has been reset, reinstalled, rebooted, and reconnected. Any ideas? NF works fine through the app on the TV as well as the app on the cable box.

The only thing I can add to this conversation is that Netflix and the new TV 4K got along fine for a couple of weeks, we had no issues. Suddenly several days ago after no changes by us (though possible TV 4K update because it's set to auto-update) Netflix video disappeared. Still have audio and sub-titles, but the main picture is black.

As others are reporting, every other app source (YouTube, Crackle, TED, etc.) works fine. Our television is a Sony Bravia 1080p, not 4K.

Just wanted to let yo know that an Apple Engineer downloaded data from my Apple TV 4K to analyse and try to figure out the issue. I do not know if I will get back some feedback as I was told that if a fix was found, Netflix would be contacted...

I did some more tests and I am starting to wonder if there is some HDCP handshake issue between my Sony TV 4K and my Apple TV 4K. When I have the issue, I get the following error message when I try to watch an iTunes "extra" (no problem watching the actual movie - just the iTunes extra):

"This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection."

I also found out that when I turn everything on and I get a screen blackout that lasts a few seconds when the Apple TV screen comes up that I will be having problems with Netflix - no issue with the Apple TV when I don't get that blackout.

So maybe something happens to the HDCP connectivity - this is why protected content such as Netflix and Amazone Prime Video would not play correctly but YouTube would work without problems.

So far the only thing that seems to be working for me is to keep the Apple TV from going to sleep. If the Apple TV goes to sleep then it will always have the no video issue. Now if I manually put it to sleep, I have no issues but I am doing so with my tv still on. If I allow the Apple TV to sleep, turn the tv off, and then I turn the tv back on later, then the no video issue will always happen. I have not tried doing any resets on my Sony tv or Apple TV. I agree that the HDCP handshaking has been disrupted. The Chroma does need to be kept at the setting of 4.2.0. Changing to the 4.2.2 setting seems to cause the video to blank out momentary.

I kept having this issue of needing to restart my Apple TV in order to get the picture on Netflix to work. After a number of failed attempts, what seems to have solved the problem is setting the Apple TV to never go to sleep by itself by going to Settings-General-"Sleep After" and selecting "Never". It seems that when the Apple TV goes to sleep automatically it somehow loses the Netflix video connection with the TV which causes the restart to be required.

Had a similar issue. All was working fine until last night. Running 11.2.5 beta. Netflix started not playing movies (audio but no picture), then last night started to fail showing any picture when running the Netflix app. Just snow! Thought it was the cable. Tried an old AppleTV i have still and all good. Back to the 4K and snow. Left it till this morning, worked for a while, then wouldn't show a picture. Changed the resolution to 4K HDR @ 30Hz....all good. Still not happy though as all apps previously worked on 4K HDR 2 60Hz. Problem was Netflix app. Deleted and redownloaded. All working fine on 4K HDR @ 60 Hz.

My latest. I moved the 4K Apple TV to the non 4K TV and the non 3k older Apple TV to the 4K tv. Netflix worked but picture was not awesome. After two weeks I switched the Apple TV 4K back to the 4K TV without restarting anything and have video perfect and on 4K ever since. Never touched the HDMI and didn’t reset any video settings. It just reverted to 4K.

Had it working a couple of days by never turning off apple tv.. now it suddenly is worse than ever even though Apple tv 4k never goes to sleep. Tried every setting. Basically i have to restart atv to watch netflix each time i turn off the tv

This is just awful. Seems like an easy fix, obviously a hdcp handshake is needed again or something - how can apple not fix this?

Running latest beta atv os on a Sony 4k tv. Anyone got more info from apple??

Nothing yet and I do not think that I will get a reply - from what they told me, if there is an issue they will fix it and issue a patch or notify Netflix and tell them to fix their app.

I am also waiting fro the next patch from Sony - wonder if their latest patch in November did not break something in the HDCP handshake.

Yep - very frustrating - a lot of people have this issue. I also asked the Apple technician to check this thread - sent him the link...

I'm over it. So tired of having to deal with this. Restart needed every time I want to watch Hulu, Netflix etc. Now even getting an issue where things will play without sound but have the picture besides the picture and no sound issue. Other apps as well: AE, Nick JR, Disney.

Great new Sony TV and Apple 4K top of line piece from Apple. Way too much work.

Same problem,

- Netflix: black screen with sound

- Prime: stuck in Loading

- Youtube works

TV: (a monitor actually) swedx 58 inch

after restarting the Apple TV it works mostly.

I am very frustrated - bought 5 HDMI Cables, mails to Swedx and hours of googling.

For me it is an Apple TV bug.

- It is not a Netflix only problem

- After restarting the Apple TV it works

- It appears on many different TVs

Since it is possible to make it run im hoping for a quick bugfix.

Cheers

Felix

Thanks, that’s what I thought. This isn’t a problem specific to Netflix or to the 4K model. It’s a problem with both models of the Apple TV and with certain types of content of which Netflix is just one, although probably the most popular.

I wonder which version of tvOS this started with. I first noticed it in mid-November but I hadn’t watched much in the preceding month, and this thread started on October 11. tvOS 11.0 was released on Sept. 19 and 11.1 was Oct 31. If the problem started with 11.0 then I’m surprised there haven’t been more complaints. Of course it could have nothing to do with tvOS itself and could be due to something else.
