Return it for an exchange. It’s faulty.
Have been meaning to post this for a while - the issue is not the phone. It’s the flip case. When you fold it back, it covers the rear mic and the phone thinks your voice is the background noise (hence trying to cancel it out).
I have tried calling without folding the cover and multiple people confirmed my voice was crisp.
I found the issue was with Wi-Fi Assist and LTE for calls. I turned off the Wi-Fi Assist and LTE for calls and it solved my problem. I turned Wi-Fi assist back on recently and it was fine.
Turning off noise cancellation corrected the problem
Same issue here- people report the audio to be very muffled and unclear. They’re unable to make out the words when I talk.
Interestingly when I put the call on speaker, the other person can hear me very clearly. Seems this might be an issue with the mouthpiece on these new phones?
It’s faulty return it for replacement they will not be able to repair it because they don’t know what’s causing the problem. I had three until I got one that worked. Had 3 space grey then went for a silver that worked. No idea why. Perhaps a different batch.
Try updating to iOS 11.2 today and see if that helps. If it doesn't make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and have it looked at.
Yes thats what I did. They gave me a new one which works fine.
I fixed this problem by doing the following...
Settings -> General -> Accessibility ->Hearing Aid Compatibility "Toggled On".

Exactly. The case. And in my case was a Guess case with all the speakers opened. It was to take off the case and everything solved.
Been in touch with Apple technical support this morning re your fix. However, they state they have no knowledge of this fault and it may be a bad batch. I explained that I gave had 2 Iphone x’s with this fault and that a number of people seem to be affected by it but still said it must be an untested faulty batch. So my advice to anyone with this problem would be to return it ASAP as you may have a faulty device. I will purchase another as soon as I get my refund on my card and try it out and return it if it’s of the so called faulty batch. Waiting a scheduled call from Apple later today and will report back if anything further to add.
I’ve found that the last thing Apple want to admit is that their flagship iPhone has a bug that they can’t fix. I would set about making a complaint to force them to exchange your iPhone and if subsequent exchanges are faulty keep exchanging them. Many people will not be aware that others can’t hear them because people don’t like telling the caller they can’t hear them because they sound muffled. I was able to make a call to a store assistants Iphone that highlighted the fault. Initialily they stated it was audible but muffled but hen I called Apple help line then they couldn’t hear them so a hands up.
After 3 iPhones all x 256gb space grey, I can say that it has nothing to do with your carrier. This is an Apple ploy to shift the buck. I finally got a silver x 256gb and no problems at all. Apple tried to tell me it’s was a carrier issue, if that was that case how then does this latest exchange Iphone work. Return it and keep returning it until you get one that’s not faulty.
Apple will never acknowledge it here, this is a user-to-user technical support site. Nor will they see your post. You need to make a Genius Bar appointment or call AppleCare.
Just curious, are you using a folios type case? Does it act the same out of the case?
More than 15 million iPhone X models have been sold. What percentage of that is 868?
Get them to send you a parcel that you can send it back to them in for repair. If you go to the store, they'll just fart around with it and give it you back. If you send it them they'll likely replace the microphone.
I'm still testing mine after they replaced the mic & display. Sod's law though, hardly had any calls since!
Because it's not a problem for the vast majority of owners.
