people cant hear me on calls on iphone x

I’ve had my iPhone X since release day, but over the calls I’ve made. I’ve had everyone say I sound very faint at times or they can’t hear me at all. Then I have to yell and all of a sudden they hear me yelling at them. Is this a software problem? Or should I go to the Apple store? Less than a week owning it is pretty disappointing when I have to go to the store for a check already...

Have been meaning to post this for a while - the issue is not the phone. It’s the flip case. When you fold it back, it covers the rear mic and the phone thinks your voice is the background noise (hence trying to cancel it out).

I have tried calling without folding the cover and multiple people confirmed my voice was crisp.

So I have spoken with Apple Support and their engineers have been able to look over my diagnostic logs. This issue is much more wide spread than people understand and Apple and their Engineers are aware of the issue. It seems it has something to do with the mic on the back camera and noise cancellation. Apple definitely has a problem. However, they are very reluctant to admit it. I can actually simulate the problem.

I`ve also had this issue both on iPhone 8 and now on iPhone X. The only solution I`ve found so far is enabling !! noise cancellation and holding a finger against the rear microphone (the one next to the LED light between the lenses) when making a phone call and thus blocking it. Before I`ve experienced trouble during literally every phone call but now people hear me loud and clear.

I mean.. it`s a bit stupid to do this kind of black magic with a $1000 phone but at least now I can finally make phone calls with it 😀

My office desk is in the same place now as it was when I owned an iPhone 7 plus two weeks ago. I place my iPhone X in exactly the same location and position as I did with the 7 plus, but now I routinely have callers tell me that they can no longer hear me mid-call. At first I thought it was my bluetooth headset, so I eliminated that and started using speaker phone. I've disabled noise reduction (accessibility feature) and still callers are saying that, when I answer or call or call them, they hear me for a few seconds to a minute and then can no longer hear me. I bought my wife an iPhone X the same day I bought mine and hers replaced an iPhone 6s. She has the same problem. iPhone 6s maintained calls at our house and now the iPhone X does not. Something is wrong with the iPhone X. Not sure if it's hardware, firmware or software, but there's no doubt in my mind that something is wrong.

I have had the exact same problem on 2 IPhone X 256gb the first exchanged and the second returned for a refund because the store had no solution. We tried the phone in store and it clearly was inaudible unless I shouted directly into to bottom of the phone. Then all of a sudden for a few sentences I could be heard but it was still muffled, then it became virtually inaudible again. The store upgraded the phone to the latest firmware that had just been released yesterday and that seemed to increase the volume so I could be heard although still muffled but I took the phone away to try it further. Then within a space of a few hours, callers could not hear me clearly. I took the phone back to the store and in store the phone settings were reset with no effect. The whole phone was erased and set up as a new phone with only the supplied Apple apps but still no solution. The store requested I get a replacement sim which I did from the three store a few stores away. Still no solution, low and muffled volume. Works fine if using speaker phone. The store staff were as confused by the fault as I was, albeit they were very helpful. Clearly an issue, as this is the same fault on 2 separate iPhone x’s. back to my old iPhone 6 until I’m satisfied apple have this one sorted.

My iPhone X was making muffled calls. It was in folio Apple case. Muffled calls cleared up when I put the phone on speaker phone. I’ve tried hard and soft reboot‘s, with and without case (cleared a little) to no avail. I brought the phone to the Apple Store (3 hr drive) to have tests run on it and the outcome of those tests was everything was operating as normal. We tried to duplicate the muffled sound and after many tries we succeeded duplicating the sound. the tec then went into the setting, cellular, cellular data options, enable LTE, ticked on voice and data. After doing us the phone seem to work fine I left the store and a few hours later made some calls which were again muffled. I went back to the store and exchanged my iPhone for another iPhone X. After making 2 calls It seemed to work fine. I left the store and had the same thing happen one hour later... muffled calls. Today I will try a new SIM card and see if that helps, but in reading the previous replys it looks as if it won’t . It seems many are having the same problem, apple has really dropped the ball on this one

I have the exact same issue. I bought my iphone X on thursday and when i tried taking calls i couldn't hear anything from the earpiece, with the speaker on, the sound was flawless. So i tried the following with no changes:

  • Taking off the case, i have a leather one from Apple
  • Cleaning the earpiece
  • Recording a voice memo and changing the output of the sound
  • Hard reset
  • Connecting a headphones
  • Clean installation

Finally i have contacted apple support and appointed a Genius Bar meeting for saturday as it seems a HW related issue. It's pretty disappointing that a >1000€ phone can't take calls, i hope Apple reads this and checks their production line.

Same issue here- people report the audio to be very muffled and unclear. They’re unable to make out the words when I talk.

Interestingly when I put the call on speaker, the other person can hear me very clearly.

Have already had one replacement phone because of this issue and the camera stopped working correctly, looks like I may have to send this one back too.

Am going to try turning off the noise reduction mention in other posts to see if this will work.

I can confirm this is an issue with iPhone X which I just discovered on my first conference call with it. I do conference calls several times a week and never had this problem with the iPhone 6s this X replaced.

My use case: on the 6s I would plug in earbuds and use the phone's built in mics to do the call. It worked awesome! Tried the same with the IPhone X using a headphone/charge port adapter, same earbuds. I have a quiet office environment from where I make the calls.

My symptoms with the iPhone X:

  1. with earbuds plugged in, people complain they can hardly hear me.
  2. As soon as I unplug the earbuds and use the "speaker" function (from the call screen), everyone says they can hear me normally

Based on the change in audibility transitioning from 1-->2 above, it can't be a hardware issue such as a case. It is either:

  1. there are multiple mics, but some get turned off when earbuds are in for some reason (bug)
  2. as others point out, there maybe something wrong with the noise cancellation which for some reason doesn't happen when in speakerphone mode, but happens when earbuds are plugged in (bug)

This is an impactful problem for me. I use the iphone for business and using earbuds for conference calls lets me hear everything much better than through the speaker, especially with offshore conference calls. If it doesn't get corrected, I need to look at a droid phone if I can exchange or definitely on the next go around. If I keep it, it sounds like I may need to invest in some external hardware because of Apple's software problem. It's disappointing Apple is dismissing this as a case problem. Quality and customer service are falling off ever so slightly year over year.

I had an iPhone 6 before the X I have now and had no problems with call quality. Since I've had the X I've had callers saying they either cannot hear me or I sound distorted or robot-like. I've had my phone back to apple for repair and was using an old android phone whilst it was away - I had no issue with the android. Apple replaced the microphone and display (not sure why they replaced the display) and I'm still getting the same issue. I'm trying if for a couple more days then I think I'm going to ask for a refund under my consumer rights. Not good but I'm considering ditching apple and going back to android. If a phone doesn't perform its primary function then its a poor show.
