Do you think I should consider returning it? As far as I can see, many users have this issue but others aren’t experiencing this weird “cold gate” issue with the LED flash. I’m confused and I don’t know whether it’s a software or a hardware issue.

Hi djtwok,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you are having some issues with the flash on your iPhone when it is cold out. I'm not sure how cold we are talking, but you may want to make sure that you are using your iPhone within the range outlined below:
Environmental Requirements
- Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
- Nonoperating temperature: −4° to 113° F (−20° to 45° C)
- Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
- Operating altitude: tested up to 10,000 feet (3000 m)
iPhone 8 - Technical Specifications - Apple
Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures.
Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support
Regards.
This firm said its a software problem, the Apple work hard on the issue.
This is an certificate Apple Service!
They said we must told as many we can to Apple! Very important☝
Sorry to disappoint but apple don’t give a ****, they’ve gave me 3 iPhone 8 pluses, my case went far went on for weeks and in the end they said there’s nothing that can be done it’s designed like this to protect the battery apparently !! Just a load of crap but they are fully aware of the issue and don’t plan on fixing it so sorry you will have to wait till summer to use your flash at night

But are we guys sure it’s not just a huge batch of faulty phones? Apparently some people aren’t experiencing this issue, at least judging from their comments.
Many are complaining, and that’s a matter of fact, but I really want to make sure this issue is actually affecting all of the iPhones 8/8 Plus and X on the market.
Why don’t they even addres this problem on YouTube? I mean the tech reviewers... I’m so **** confused!
Yeah, please let me know as you as you can because I still don’t know whether I should return it or wait for a software fix! Do you know 8/8 Plus users whose phones work just fine even in cold weather?
I am experiencing the same problem with my iPhone 8 Plus.
Went out for a bike ride this evening and stopped to take a few photos. However, the flash didn’t work. I tried it in ‘AUTO’ and ‘ON’ but no joy. Ambient temperature was about 4 or 5degC.
Once I got home and had been indoors for about 5 minutes the flash worked fine.
So weird, I really hope they’ll fix it soon!
Anyway, hoping that it’s a software issue and they’ll fix it soon, here’s a tick to take pics when when it’s too cold outside and the flash doesn’t work: scroll up to the control panel, turn on the Flashlight setting it to the max level of brightness, get back to the Camera App and... the magic happens!
Im having the same problem, literally just got mine swapped out not even a hour ago started walking home not even 10 minutes outside the "replacement" did the same thing. It's not even that cold out! When the phone is exposed to the slightest cold temperature the flash does not work. Im restoring my replacement as I type this. It was a waste of time. This is something Apple needs to address in maybe a software update. The Apple tech told me someone came in with the same issue the other day but he couldn't help him because he didn't have an appointment. When my phone warms up it starts working again. I walk to the gym so when I got to the gym lucky my gym is located in the back of the mall I went in and spoke to the tech I said "Look what happens" lucky I made an appointment. I said Im showing you now so when I do come in later it won't look like Im crazy. He noted it in my appointment. He said "Oh I see..." a few hours later at my appointment time he said hes going to swap my phone out but he said had it not been for him seeing it with his own eyes I would have had to record it and bring the video in as evidence because the flash would of worked at that point and the diagnostic showed nothing wrong with the phone.
I dont know if Apple is aware of this issue but they need to fix this, a lot of iPhone 8+ and iPhone X users seem to be having this issue. My friend was with me yesterday in NewYork (colder than today) the same time with me same duration of time spent outdoors and his iPhone 7+ had no issues with the flash. I believe this is exclusively a iPhone8+/iPhone X issue.
They need to seriously address this.
I haven’t swapped mine for a new one yet because there’s no Apple store in the area where I live and I should ship mine, which means it will take at least 9-10 days for me to get it back. So frustrating...
Could be connected to Apples battery statement
Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.
Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.
I’m having the same problem with the flash on a new iPhone X. If I go outside, and it’s below 32°, and perhaps take the dog for a walk, etc., the flash doesn’t work. The flashlight works. It starts working again a few minutes after I bring it inside. This happens even if I’ve kept it in my pocket so it’s relatively warm.
Same here. Called Apple and gave them link to this communication. They told they were not aware of this issue 😮. Hopefully this issue gets resolved. I was just wondering, if this issue is only with 8+ or even X is affected.
I live in Maine, where it’s often cold, and so far have not figured how to fix other than bringing indoors, playing with it a little bit such as switching around some of the settings, and then it gradually start working again. It’s irritating to not be able to take photos outdoors, like I used to do quite frankly with my Samsung product.....
Not true what Apple say they know, they are not willing to take on the problem. To many devices!
We must form
a community and to enforce their will! A common letter to Apple's leadership that everyone signs here!
I contacted Apple Support today again but nevertheless they told me that they don`t heard about. I gave them the hyperlink to this discussion but the reaction was "ok....I will check it later".
She told me also that I should visit with my 8 plus the Apple Store or request a repair of my phone.
From my point of view this feedback is a sign that the regular support don´t know how to handle with this problem,
I am not from technical service from Apple but I think that they don´t can solve this with an exchange of my 8 plus. Furthermore two times they checked my phone via the "analysis app". First time because I bought Apple care + for my phone. But the woman from Apple Support ignored that and told me that I have to visit the Apple Store or order a repair. Very strange and crazy from my point of view.
