When cold flash not working IPhone 8+

Does anyone has the Same problem ? When it’s cold outside my iPhone 8+ Flash isn’t working. Even when it’s dark no flash when taking a picture. As soon as I’m inside my house and the phone gets warmer the flash works again. The flashlight is working normal.

Hi djtwok,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you are having some issues with the flash on your iPhone when it is cold out. I'm not sure how cold we are talking, but you may want to make sure that you are using your iPhone within the range outlined below:

Environmental Requirements

  • Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
  • Nonoperating temperature: −4° to 113° F (−20° to 45° C)
  • Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
  • Operating altitude: tested up to 10,000 feet (3000 m)

iPhone 8 - Technical Specifications - Apple

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures.

Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support
Regards.

I gave up. I went for a walk in not so cold weather and it was doing it again. Showed the Apple “Genius” in the Apple store.

Me: See what I’m talking about I had to run in here to show you because once the phone warms up it starts working normal again (the flash)

Apple tech: You might wanna get that checked out man make an appointment.

Me: yea I did that they swapped it out 5 minutes of me leaving the Apple store walking home temperature was 51° out it was doing it again.

Apple tech: I would still make an appointment and get it checked out man..

Me: But that’s what I did 4 days ago and they swapped it out it still has the same issue!

Apple tech: I would make the appointment and see if they can fix it

Me: 💀💀💀 But what’s the point? Get another replacement for it to happen again? Are you going to replace my screen protector because Apple didn’t the first time.

Apple Tech: yea man make that appointment see what’s going on

Me: subconsciously contacted ufo and flew out Apple Store

At this point I don’t think this is a hardware issue. I spoke to Apple Support spoke to a Senior Advisor 2 weeks ago took my analysis data from my phone I sent it to him he said he would send to the engineers so they can figure out what’s going on. Told me someone would contact me regarding this that was high than a Senior Advisor the next day at 4PM I get a call at 4PM me thinking it was going to be a engineer. Nope! It was another Senior Advisor who said she couldn’t help me and someone would be contacting me above her. This was 2 weeks ago and no one never contacted me at all.

Brother works for Apple I showed him because when I went in there that day I had that conversation above my brother just walked in I said LOOK! He’s like yea that’s abnormal. But nothing he can do.

I asked him tonight 12/28 did you get any cases with flash acting weird when the phone gets a little cold but not unbearably cold?

Him: no

But think about it no one is really using their flash in the cold or in a dark place outside I’ve been telling people with a 8+ that I know to try and I’m still waiting to hear feedback I guess people forget.

This is not something that can be fixed with swapping your phone out for another one. So if you plan on swapping your phone don’t waste your time and having to go buy a screen protector gathering all the information from the forums and personal experience this is something happening even with swapped phones.

I call this issue #Flashgate we need to spread the word I emailed Macrumors and sent them this link to this forum because it seems like all of us have been getting the run around or get a BS answer. I explained to MacRumors the situation and told them to check the forums. Haven’t seen anything yet on their page. Probably doing some research [hopefully] to write a well thought out article. **** I’ll even write it for them.

But this is really ridiculous at this point.

I am also getting the same problem. This is highly stressful. The phone is brand new (bought yesterday, 8+) and when I went outside in 2’C the flash stopped working on the camera and was only functional when using it as a flashlight. What can be done about this considering I never experienced the same problems with my IPhone 7. I would expect better from Apple especially when the prices of IPhones is increasing A LOT

Thanks

I have an iPhone 8+ 256gb, I thought I was the only one, I contacted Apple with their customer support app but they said it was an isolated issue and that my flash was probably exposed to some vapor resulting the vapor to freeze in cold environment and causing a problem with the camer-flash connection they said I needed to take my iPhone to a service center.

We need to let Apple know of this issue, everyone that has this issue send Apple a link to this thread to let them know that a lot of people are having this issue.

I talked to Verizon, who I bought the phone from technically, and they transferred me to Apple. They are actually are aware of the problem they told me and opened a case, and they believe they can repair this problem with a software update eventually when they figure it out. I would recommend everyone who has this problem contact Apple directly about this as I think the more people that complain, the more quickly it’ll be fixed.

Yep I had the same problem, had 3 iPhone 8 pluses now all the same problem, never replaced my screen protectors so I spent £30 on screen protectors within a week they wouldn’t give me a new one as I didn’t purchase from Apple!! Such a joke. I wanted my contract cancelling but where I got my phone from won’t cancel because it’s been more than 30 days I only got this phone because of the camera doing the portrait mode to take amazing pics of my son on so I really am not happy I can’t take pictures of him outside in the dark occasions like bonfire night , Halloween, holidays if I go somewhere cold, the excuse I got was it operates like this to protect the battery my case has been thobbed off I’m now stuck with a phone I don’t want living in hope it gets sorted , otherwise I’m stuck with this phone for the next two or so years.. if it doesn’t get sorted I very much doubt I will be getting another iPhone after this I loved my first ever iPhone that’s why I decided to upgrade once that contract ended and now after the way I’ve been treated and people on store laughing at me looking like some crazy person coming in saying my phone camera flash isn’t working because my phOnes cold, making me feel like a laughing stock.. I’m really not happy with anybody who has dealt with me the fact after all their trouble couldn’t even give me a screen protector. My partner has the iPhone X his does exactly the same thing all though his flash works longer in cold weather it still aventually stops working .. also starts working again faster than my 8 plus once in doors , a tip for you though turn flashlight on for about 30/40 secs flash should work again until cold x

It is 36 degrees Fahrenheit, actually kind of above the normal weather today and no snow and the flash on my iphone 8 plus won't work outside? I go inside and it works fine. My phone is on inside pocket of my coat next to my body, so it's probably warmer than 36 degrees. I am on my 4th iphone (Had 4,5,6 plus, and now 8plus) I've never had this problem with any of my phones. Is it a defect? Should I take my phone in? I live in the North (Northern Indiana) where it's always cold in the winter LOL Ridiculous.

Yes! I just got my iPhone 8 Plus 256gb 3 days ago. I took my kids out for a walk and it is not too cold, only -2C (29F) and my camera flash wasn’t working. It gets dark here early in the winter so I couldn’t use it. I tried to do a hard reset and test everything and nothing would make it work. As soon as I got home and the phone warmed up (2 minutes) it worked like there is no problem. So sad because my iPhone 6s I had before I upgraded to this would die in the cold and it would be like 30% battery life but turn on when it got warm again and turn on to that 30%. I’m just sad that iPhones don’t do well in colder weather. My iPhone 3 and 4 never had issues in cold weather.
