Custom lyrics not showing iOS 11.2

After updating my iphone to 11.2 recently, I noticed I cannot look at my custom lyrics I added via iTunes on my phone anymore. There is no show lyrics button. Why is this? Is this a bug or is this how the app is for the foreseeable future? I am seriously, deeply sad and angry that this feature has been taken away. It was literally the only thing keeping me in iOS.

This is getting painful.

It worked only with difficulty in iOS11.1.2.

For me it was necessary to remove all of my music and then sync it again.

Now, even this trick does not work...

How could we get apple to get this to work???

I'm making this sound more complicated than it is 🙂

Under iTunes Options for my device I check "Manually manage music and videos" and I cut and paste files from my pc directly into the music folder of my device.

My quick testing shows when I delete files that I added just a few days ago under 11.2.2 and repaste them in now under 11.2.5, the lyrics display after going through the multistep process to view them.

Almost useless method. Lyrics are for spontaneous enjoyment while the song is playing. Nobody will drill down that way to get to lyrics. The way it used to work until iOS 10 was that you would just touch the large album art and the lyrics would display with the art tastefully faded out behind. It was refined and beautiful and flawless. It was what Apple used to be.

Will, I hear you and I'm glad it's working for you! I did my re-pasting after updating to 11.2.5, so I can't promise the update won't break your lyrics again. If it's not too much trouble why not try it, you can always re-paste. Of course even when it's working now it's not a real fix to have to jump through those convoluted hoops; it merely proves that the lyrics are there.

Well. Let's be more precise here.

I updated my ipad to 11.2.5.

After the update, nothing worked.

The method I described way back not longer worked.

I removed all of my music by syncing with no music.

I added a few playlist and synced again.

Then I can activate the lyrics by touching the line of the song playing, followed by touchig the appropriate command.

The lyrics fill my screen.

When the following song ( with lyrics ) starts, lyrics are not updated.

A lot of improvement still needs to be done.

I would like to suggest a flag: lyrics on , lyrics off.

Also the lyrics could fill the screen partially. The rest of the screen being available for controls ( shuffle, next song...)

there is another, easier way. stop using Apple's Music app and use another music app from the App Store, i.e. LeechTunes, which always shows the lyrics without any problems. personally, I use Apple's Music most of the time and switch to that app whenever I want to quickly see the lyrics. of course LeechTunes is not the only one that shows song lyrics, there are many different apps you can get from the App Store that consistently show lyrics without issues.

it's sad tho that the Music app has had this problem for so long. I don't believe they can't fix it, it just seems they don't think it important enough to deal with it. so I'm not holding my breath for any solution from Apple anytime soon. I believe it's been two years now, so if it really bothered them, they would have fixed it by now.

Hey Will,

I don't mean to be a human ad for a specific developer or company, that's why I wrote "there are many different apps you can get from the App Store that consistently show lyrics without issues".

I've tried quite a few music apps in the past few years, mostly looking for apps that easily display ratings and lyrics, and the best ones for me right now are LeechTunes and CarTunes (only a matter of personal opinion of course).

I'm not sure what issues the reviewers you saw found with LeechTunes, it's been working fine for me.

But they point I wanted to make here is that this confirms that the lyrics are indeed embedded in there, but Apple's Music app just cannot show them anymore, for some strange reason. I didn't mean to tell people they should use the app I use, far from it.

Alex

P.S. I just noticed I wrote 'i.e.' instead of 'e.g.', which completely changes the meaning, sorry for that.

I signed in to respond to someone who had an excellent work around, but can't see the answer now that I'm signed in, so I'll put the steps in here: (bear in mind I have not gone through my entire list of songs that seem to be missing the lyrics when you tap the 3 red dots, but so far so good 🙂

Play song

Tap on the 3 red dots at the bottom right

If the Lyrics option does not appear, tap on the small album artwork to the left of the name of the song

The song that is playing will be highlighted in pink. Hold your finger on the song.

You should hopefully now see the lyrics.

Hi. I posted a workaround above, but here is again...

To add to this, I tried some more songs, some of which did not load the lyrics, so the solution to that is to go into ITunes on your computer--->song--->get information---lyrics--->alter just one character in the lyrics you have (I put a space after the first line). You can now go back to your IPhone music and follow the steps above. For the most part the lyrics load, I had to do the same steps above a couple of times for a couple of songs, but they eventually appeared.

Hope this helps 🙂

oh i'm sorry, i thought you meant something new, not mentioned previously in this forum. i've tried this workaround before, it works fine.

however, it's too complicated for me, i find it easier to use Apple's Music app for everything but lyrics, then quickly switch to another app when i want to see lyrics, e.g. Musixmatch if i have an internet connection or LeechTunes if i don't

sorry, just to be clear, the way i do it is not without it's drawbacks

Musixmatch is amazing in that it shows lyrics in real time, like karaoke lyrics, but (a) it requires an internet connection and (b) it doesn't show the lyrics that i've personally added, it shows internet lyrics, which is not ideal for me, because i've taken the trouble to add some details to some of my song lyrics, e.g. who are the musicians in some of my jazz or blues songs i have

and LeechTunes takes a few seconds to load the first time you open it and you can only see lyrics with a customisable gesture (i've set it to swipe down with two fingers)

the ideal way for me would be for Apple to finally solve this problem once and for all, so i can go back to using just one app again

I have a lot of songs in my collection (~90k) and I carry about (18k) on my iPhone 8. I curate my collection very carefully (it’s a hobby), making sure the tag information is complete and correct. Fun for me and my family is gathering and playing music. Often I will get a question about a particular song. It might be about the studio, year, composer or the lyrics. The answer is usually something that can be found in the tag info or lyric. It is soooo frustrating to not be able to see that info. I carefully read through every page of this post and, unfortunately, nothing has brought back lyrics to my phone. So, a shout out to Apple, please fix this flaw in your product!

OK.

I posted a small movie a while back, explaining how I could get the lyrics.

The link is on page one of this discussion.

Unfortunately this worked with ealier versions for 11.2.

But with 11.2.5, it no longer works.

However, someone posted recently an alternate method that works with 11.2.5.

Apple what we need is some flag : lyrics on or lyrics off.

If flags is on, lyrics display if they are present (clearly they don't if lyrics are not present) , hence the lyrics change when a song change occurs.

With lyrics off, it's clear.

Not sure this will ever take place.

Let's keep our fngers crossed.
