Iphone 8 plus microphone issues

The microphone on my iphone 8 plus is constantly fading in and out. I may have a perfectly fine conversation over the phone for 10 minutes or so, but in the end I always end up having to switch to the speaker because the people on the other end can’t hear me.

Anyone else experience this? What can I do?

I did a few things that seems to have helped quite a bit. I set LTE to data only and disabled the background noise filter as others have suggested. I don't have anyone complaining now when I'm on speaker or not. I'm suspecting that the LTE thing is the culprit and not necessarily the microphone. The reason is that all other applications not making calls were able to hear just fine. I also downloaded a spectacular app called Lirum info. There is a lite version for free but you need to pay the 2.99 for the full version to test your microphones. Its a very complete diagnostic app that gives you access to nearly everything on the phone and full diagnostics. The tech at the genius bar was even a bit amazed when I brought my old Ip 6 plus in for a new battery! Anyhow I'm not trying to sell the app, but I tested all the microphones using it. They are all functioning perfectly. So, I know that disabling the LTE for calls was most likely what was causing the problem. At least in my case. I'm not sure what the LTE on calls does, but disabling it did nothing that I can detect to call quality or performance. But it did seem to fix the muffled mic issue for me. Apple needs to look at this.

Getting nasty is really not me. I am a Diplomat and not part of my fabric but emergencies are hourly and being unheard is dangerous. ATT is not the common carrier issue. I am in Spain on business and walked into Apple Store here. Three Apple Associates acknowledged the issues to my face yet said not carrier related and speculated Mic problem and not software issue. Glad you are running. Wondering about the other people on the previous 5 pages complaining same issues. Oh well, guess we are the minirity. 😏 best to you.

When I fixed the microphone problem, it became a great phone. IOS is much better then android.

But I'am disappointed in apple to have this mic problem in the first place.

But especially,

I took it too the apple-store just after 14 days of testing, calling customer service, trying settings, updating etc.

They diagnosed the iPhone and said there was nothing wrong.

But still I insisted to sent for repairs anyway, because I couldn't use the phone.

After about 7-14 days it got back and I went to the shop to get it.

Nothing was repaired and the call quality for the receiver was still very bad.

So did a test for 15 minutes in the shop. I called my self on the iPhone and got voicemail.

Put another phone with a talk program aside. The recorded voicemail was very very poor and they agreed to that.

But still, because they had sent it to repairs and nothing was found, I had to pay 40 bucks!

Spent about 2-3 hours in that shop till closing time.

Later I got through another channel the phone replaced, and the new iphone 8 had the same problem but a bit less.

Ever since Verizon changed my Sim card and a few settings I seem to have no problem. Because of all the past issues and the months of frustration and hours and hours of dealing with this situation has left me with a tainted attitude toward this phone.

I probably should’ve spent an extra hundred dollars I’ve gotten the tan because I really need good photos. This phone is supposed to have good photos but the 6S photos are just as good.

I don’t like the portrait mode and I don’t take many videos which apparently this phone is good for. I don’t know what kind of issues the 10 has.

Where do you live? I live in New York. Maybe that could be the reason my issue was finally solved. I have seen messages from Australia and other parts of the country complaining of the same issue. I really hope that you get the problems with your phone resolved.

I can’t get rid of the worry that this microphone will go berserk again. Every time someone asks me to repeat myself or tells me they can’t hear me I question them as to exactly what they are hearing.

It seems silly to say that this whole episode was rather traumatic because it is only a phone however I was really going over the edge with this. I can only imagine how you must feel and I am incredibly sorry you are still experiencing the frustrations and anxiety caused by this situation. Not to mention the time wasted.

Welcome to the many who are experiencing everything you are and more. Firstly, go to carrier and get them to replace SIM Card. It more than likely will do nothing. But it one less item Apple will try to say it is YOUR issue over there’s. You will not get any relief. Then go and back up your phone and let Apple replace it. Again, you will notice no difference. Then call Tech Support and ask for a Level III Tech Support Engineer. They will get you to restart the phone, then remove iTunes and replace it. Then check settings. Then check the Mic with the internal system of voice messages. Plan on packing lunch and dinner with water and maybe beer as you will need it. Plan on spending 5 hours of pure back and forth and no relief at all. Welcome to the many who are experiencing the same issues with zero fix in sight. Lastly, my 6 (went through 4 until the right one worked) and miss that phone. Really regret the upgrade to my 8S+. The web is full of reports on this yet at Apple, they act like you are the first one to report this.

Been there, done that and nothing. Best thing to do is keep calling Apple, ramp up complaints to Level III and get case numbers. They must address this sooner than later. Seen many very disappointed consumers who are talking other actions and utilizing certain rights and rememdies to elevate the awareness. This is totally unacceptable and even the ATT carrier is tired of the complaints and consumers walking in extremely angry. Press on and at some Point in time we believe Apple will be forced to address it. Good luck. To us all.

I have had issues with Mary 8+ phone from the get go! I am on my third phone. I have spent countless hours on the phone with Apple Seniors and technicians.

I have jumped through so many hoops and gone to the Apple Store until I want to take the phone and throw it in the garbage.

I thought I had the problem solved when I replaced the Sim card at Verizon.

They switched a few settings around and for the first time I was able to have a conversation without someone on the other and complaining that they couldn’t hear me, that my voice was fading in and out, that I sounded like I was in a title, that I was on Mars, or whatever.

All of a sudden today, the phone started acting up again. People can’t hear me. It is dropping calls right and left. I can’t go far from my Wi-Fi without the phone having all the old issues.

Apple will still not admit that it’s their problem although one person did mention he was aware that people were complaining.

Then he more or less deny that statement because they are all instructed not to give out any information to callers.

My next step would be to get another phone, definitely not an 8+, And go to AmericAn Express with all of my complaints and my discussions which I have saved, and try and get my money back.

And go to AmericAn Express with all of my complaints and my discussions which I have saved, and try and get my money back.

There are undoubtedly people who are happy with this phone.

I am disgusted with it and have Wasted too much time Dealing with this.

Good luck with your situation. It seems as though there are many lemons out there and we just happen to be unfortunately enough to have gotten stuck with them.

I returned my phone. I am on my third phone. They keep replacing them and making you Jump through all kinds of hoops in trying to resolve the issue.

Never happens.

I tried to get my money back but they would not give it to me. Just keep replacing my phone and making me go through all the required steps to setting it up as a new phone, bringing it back to factory settings, everything you can imagine including Hours worth of testing.

Finally replacing my Sim card from Verizon and having them switch a few settings resolve the issue for a short while but now I am having the problem again.

It’s intermittent right now but it is happening again and my phone is now dropping calls all over the place.

I will just go to AmericAn Express and try and get my money back that way. I have saved all the communications from Apple and of course I will use some of the complaints from this site. Apple of course does not recognize this site as legitimate.

I intended to supply to go out to everyone with the 8+ microphone issue.

I recently got in touch with a senior representative.

Since there was no checks for my phone and it reverted to the same miserable piece of crap that I spent $900 for I decided to stop the payment on the phone through AmericAn Express.

I decided to plead my case one more time and I finally got a sensible person.

I mentioned that I had earlier requested that I trade up to the 10.

This person obviously heard or couldn’t hear me properly and read through all my case histories.

Hopefully I will be trading this worthless piece of junk in for what I hope will be something that behaves like a phone.

It is either that or they can get the phone back when I give It to them after I stop paying for it. That includes the case for which I have no use for what good is a case for the 8+.

I understand that there are people who are happy with this particular phone. This probably has to do with the fact that certain components for this faulty microphone in many of these phones are probably being manufactured by One particular company.

I personally know people who have had a microphone issue with the 8+ have moved up to the 10.

I only hope that I can end this nightmare As soon as possible.

I have seen so many communications about this phone.

I bought my phone from the upper Eastside Apple store in Manhattan On January 25 of this year.

I left the city to go to my other home. I had a problem immediately. Same issues as everyone else on this site.

I have undergone months of aggravation and excruciating lengthy phone calls. I don’t know what’s going on with Apple products lately because I am on a brand new iPad which is not letting me write properly. I have already shut it down and restarted so it looks like another Apple conversation. I am forced to use Siri which is lousy! I had a total of three phones. I finally got so disgusted I called AmericAn Express and said I’m not paying for this phone any longer I want my money back. Apple finally move me to the 10. They will never admit that it is their problem. It’s Verizon. It’s your location. It’s your Wi-Fi. It’s your fault. There are way too many complaints about this phone for them not to acknowledge that there is a serious issue with the microphone. It does not affect every single 8+ but as far as I’m concerned I’ve had three with the same issue and there are many out there who are complaining. That indicates that there is a part being made somewhere which is causing the problem.I probably should’ve done this phone and got an android. I can’t even go back and correct the grammar on this lousy iPad and will have to call Apple to find out what the problem is. Could be that they don’t like people communicating on this site because there are too many complaints.

I am on my third 8s+ with the exact same issues. People cannot hear me, say I’m breaking up, fading in and out. It is extremely frustrating and it’s taking a toll on my business. 90% of the time I’m talking away and the person on the other end can’t even hear me. Apple needs to fix this known problem. It’s totally unacceptable that they are doing nothing.

~I have had same problem with both my 6+ and my 7+....

**Microphones had to be replaced by apple 2X (TWO TIMES!!) on 6+ and they say its fine on my 7+ (IT IS NOT!)

~The speakers are crap as well and i can no longer hear podcasts or ANY audible app, well, unless a silent environment.

~Since the 11.3 iOS update my calls randomly don't ring at all. I only know I am getting a call if i see it light up... not cool... and NO, DND is not on, nor is my ringer switched off...

So sick of apples BUGGY updates and security holes too.... as a user since 1987, this is NOT the same great Apple that Jobs built!

I have the same problem. No-one I call can hear me, and when they do, it's always very faint and muffled. I don't use a cover and I have cleaned the microphones so I don't think that is the issue. I did the test with the voice memo, where the voice was clear, but it still is massively unclear on calls., The first person I contacted from Apple Support said it was a problem with the carrier (completely untrue and incredibly unhelpful) as I have made the same call with the same sim switched into another phone right after the failed call (from the same spot) and there I can be heard perfectly clearly. I have had the phone for two months (brand new) and regardless of whether I call from within a building, road, park, no-one can hear me.

Regardless of all the other uses of the phone, it is completely useless as a phone if it can't be used to make and receive calls. I have also read a number of other threads going back to Oct 2017 where other Apple users complain of the same problem - mainly iphone 8+ and 7 users. I think there is a big problem with the mic in this particular phone and Apple have instructed support to fob it off with idiotic responses like "it's your carrier" and generally deflect from the problem. They even suggested I use headphones or the speaker to make a call, which is clearly NOT a solution. I have made a genius bar appt, let's see if they say anything constructive. I have begun to hate Apple and its products because with problems like this, they are simply not worth the exorbitant prices they charge. I think the quality has drastically fallen over the last few years and Apple is not what it was and this is for certain the last iPhone I will have. I've had an iphone since 2008 and until the 6 came out, never had any issues with it. Now it's the exact opposite. (The first 8+ I got broke in less than a week and they had to replace it).
