Iphone 8 plus microphone issues

The microphone on my iphone 8 plus is constantly fading in and out. I may have a perfectly fine conversation over the phone for 10 minutes or so, but in the end I always end up having to switch to the speaker because the people on the other end can’t hear me.

Anyone else experience this? What can I do?

lte data only is good (especially when traveling) and also the noise-filter disabled. But people were still complaining. What I wrote before was a true fix for me and nobody complains that they can't hear me clearly. I don't have to put it on speaker or use a headset. IOS12 is coming and that could make a difference for some.

January 25 of this year I brought by 6S iPhone to the Apple Store on the upper Eastside in New York City. The new batteries they so generously gave me for $30 rather than $79 gave out.

I decided to upgrade to the 8+. That was the beginning of 5 1/2 months of ****.

I love both in New York City and in upstate New York.

I left the city with my new phone and immediately had complaints from everyone about the sound of my voice or rather the lack of it for the most part. I had three 8+ phones.

The microphone issue was dreadful with each phone and I spent hours and hours on the phone with Apple to cheer seniors and people above. I went through agonizing tests having to use my landline because the phone was so bad.

Of course I went to Verizon and replace the Sim card. They change the LTE setting and a few other things on the third phone and I had a reprieve for about three weeks.

Then the microphone issue returned as well as others like the phone dropping calls every five minutes and not hearing the callers clearly.

Every Apple wrap and technician heard the problems which I’m sure everyone is familiar with. The voice breaking up. The voice sounding like it was in a tunnel. No voice at all. Totally unacceptable phone.

I buy everything with AmericAn Express and called American Express and started a dispute. I just continue all payments on the phone and got a credit for the expensive case that I bought because what good is a phone case when your phone is defective.

I decided to give Apple one more chance and the last representative I spoke to decided to upgrade me to a 10. It was a seamless exchange except the fact that they sent me the new phone by fed ex with no signature required and phone got lost.

Since Apple had almost $1000 of my money on hold and I had no phone I was responsible for the fact that it was not in my possession and was about to take this up with AmericAn Express except a neighbor called and luckily told me they received my phone in error.

Personally I think the iPhone X is a downgrade from the 8 plus. I originally ordered one at 3 AM blah blah. Then I went to the Apple store and looked at it. Long and skinny display. Yeah it’s oled but everything is smaller due to the width. I canceled and got the plus. If they make an X plus I might consider that an upgrade if the phone works properly. For me personally the X is not good even if it’s more expensive.

Hi all!

I happened upon this thread today as I was standing in the Verizon store trying to problem solve the exact same issues and another customer walked in and was having the EXACT same issues as described on this forum.

My 8 plus is 7 months old to the day. About two weeks ago I started to notice that anyone I spoke with on the phone said I was breaking up, or that they couldn't hear me, and there was an awful lot of feedback/resonating sound. I attempted to call my husband and it was the exact same thing. I tried a number of the recommendations on this thread (over the course of a few days) to no avail:

1. Tried recording a new voicemail greeting...

2. Tried tape over certain parts of the phone/rear microphone...

3. Restored the phone to factory settings

4. Removed SIM card and replaced...

5. Hard restart/reset...

6. Turned off noise canceling setting...

We even videoed the calls, the microphone not working at all for the voicemail recording, all complete with sound(s) or lack-thereof ;-) as documentation for Apple!

Luckily, Verizon is replacing my 8 Plus for free because it's still under warranty, but it doesn't make this any less of an issue. Frankly, it's unacceptable and poor taste that they have yet to even acknowledge it. I believe Apple is aware and is probably working on a solution to address this issue, much like the keyboard issues, iPhone battery issues, etc... I find it incredibly hard to believe that they weren't/aren't aware of this issue as it was evident a number of people are having the same problem...

Good luck! I'll update if there are any changes.

I have seen so many communications about this phone.

I bought my phone from the upper Eastside Apple store in Manhattan On January 25 of this year.

I left the city to go to my other home. I had a problem immediately. Same issues as everyone else on this site.

I have undergone months of aggravation and excruciating lengthy phone calls. I don’t know what’s going on with Apple products lately because I am on a brand new iPad which is not letting me write properly. I have already shut it down and restarted so it looks like another Apple conversation. I am forced to use Siri which is lousy! I had a total of three phones. I finally got so disgusted I called AmericAn Express and said I’m not paying for this phone any longer I want my money back. Apple finally move me to the 10. They will never admit that it is their problem. It’s Verizon. It’s your location. It’s your Wi-Fi. It’s your fault. There are way too many complaints about this phone for them not to acknowledge that there is a serious issue with the microphone. It does not affect every single 8+ but as far as I’m concerned I’ve had three with the same issue and there are many out there who are complaining. That indicates that there is a part being made somewhere which is causing the problem.I probably should’ve done this phone and got an android. I can’t even go back and correct the grammar on this lousy iPad and will have to call Apple to find out what the problem is. Could be that they don’t like people communicating on this site because there are too many complaints.

I had my 8+ phone replaced three times. Same issues except the last phone was the worst. Incoming calls were difficult to hear. The phone started dropping calls constantly. Almost every call I made had to be repeated because the first call would not go through.

I am so disgusted with Apple products lately. They are way too pricey and the quality is not up to par anymore.

I buy everything on AmericAn Express because they have a great policy of standing behind their customers.

I contacted AmericAn Express and informed them of the problem and started a case against them. That’s when Apple agreed to move me up to the iPhone X without any penalty.

I give up! Apple you have killed my business and not one person can hear me when called. Saw hundreds of pages of complaints and you know about it. Ok, glad to see that in September the new and supposedly improved 9 & 10+ series with 6.1” screen is coming to market. I have called Tech Support at both Apple and ATT to alert them that I expect every penny back as I trade up to the newer model. This one is terrible. I have gone to ATT and they changed a couple of settings. Went to Apple and did same. This phone and its Mic are bad. When MIC is tested, it tests out fine. But even the Apple Engineers told me that they could not hear me and are puzzled what to do. Folks, time to upgrade but do not get spanked for discounting this poorly created phone. I will not allow them to insult me with just $200 buyback. Nope, not after spending $900. I’m upgrading as we are screwed into apple devices with iTunes and btw, they erased more than 100 paid for songs and now refuse to reinstall them back to my account. Apple, what has happened to your company?

When I was in Madrid Spain, walked into the Apple store there and showed them my phone. They looked at me and it then said: “ we know all about these issues but do not have a fix. Sorry be cannot do anything”. Nice. So it confirms to me that not only in the US are many of us aware of this issue but now in Europe or at least in Spain they were well aware. Very nice about it mind you, nevertheless, aware of the matter without any recommendations. I want a new upgraded phone the moment it comes out and switch me out of this 3rd 8+ in 6 months.

Jul 22, 2018 11:19 PM in response to Nexifer

It’s definitely not a downgrade. The camera is better. I do not like the fact that there is no home button. It’s a real pain. I don’t know what Apple thinks they’re doing but now I hear they’re going to discontinue the 10. I didn’t like the clunking size of the 8+ and prefer the slimmer 10.

I really disgusted with Apple products lately. I got a new iPad and I don’t like it. It’s just not working properly.

I think I might return the X I’ll just go get an android. I wouldn’t trust another A+ again and she’ll wear it but that it has a microphone issue and then I still wouldn’t touch it.

I’m on my 3rd new iPhone 8! I am having the same problems as others have w 8+. Apple tells me it’s a problem w Verizon (they sent booster) and now Verizon tell me it’s hardware problem w Apple mic. I can’t make business calls because they can’t hear me as they report my voice fades out!

I have spent endless hours trying to solve this issue! In addition to the time and money driving to the Verizon store(2 new SIM cards) and Apple store to restore, replor do tests in my phone. This has been going on since May 1918! I could cry 😢

I can identify with your frustrations. I bought my 8+ on January 25th at the Apple store on the upper east side in NYC. I left the city and immediately experienced problems.

No one could hear me. People get annoyed. Are you in a closet? Where are you? are you on Mars? You sound like you are under water? You voice keeps breaking up. And on and on.

I got three phones and had the same issues with the exception of the third phone.

That was the worst. Dropped calls right and left. I could not hear conversations. Nobody could hear. me.

I spent countless hours with Apple two and three tier reps and went through hours of agonizing tests. With speaker phone. without speaker. With air pods. I had did most of the talking only landline.

I finally went to American Express and started a dispute case against Apple.

Then I got a rep who felt sorry after seeing the giant file on my case.

She got Apple to send me a 10.

I dropped the case with Amex.

I now have a 10.

No voice problems however I do not like the way the phone operates.

There is no Home button which makes it very difficult to go from one app to the next. It is also a real pain to eliminate the old apps that are cluttering up the phone.

Apple is apparently getting rid of the 10 and I don't know what comes next but I will never buy another Apple phone again.

I was really nuts by May Theend of June from dealing with the situation.

Contact your credit Card Company and try to dispute the case. Stop paying for the phone unless you already own it.

Try to get an Apple Rep who is upper level management and tell them you want to upgrade to the 10.

I know that the company is aware of the situation. They just won't admit.

I finally got Apple to upgrade me to the 10 but as I had not purchased the phone but was paying for it monthly I did not need them to offer me a crappy deal on buying back this POS.

I buy everything through American Express anyway and would have definitely gotten my money back because of the huge file that Apple had on me.

I refused to pay for the phone any longer and had already stared a dispute case with Amex.

Apple offered me the 10.

I took the offer but Don't like the phone. It is difficult to operate as it does not have a home button.

I will never buy another Apple phone. I don't know what this company has done but the androids are so much better. The batter life is way longer. The camera is great and ease of operation makes it an ideal choice.

Getting use to an Android is no more difficult than using the 10 which is a real pain.

I have had it with Apple!

I am on my third 8s+ with the exact same issues. People cannot hear me, say I’m breaking up, fading in and out. It is extremely frustrating and it’s taking a toll on my business. 90% of the time I’m talking away and the person on the other end can’t even hear me. Apple needs to fix this known problem. It’s totally unacceptable that they are doing nothing.
