Iphone 8 plus microphone issues

The microphone on my iphone 8 plus is constantly fading in and out. I may have a perfectly fine conversation over the phone for 10 minutes or so, but in the end I always end up having to switch to the speaker because the people on the other end can’t hear me.

Anyone else experience this? What can I do?

Hi everyone

I have the same mic / call quality problems here, on an 8 Plus, purchased new in Poland and used with multiple carriers.

Definitely it is the phone's mic, and the easiest way to test/isolate this is to try calling a voicemail and leaving a message (as others have suggested):

- using the phone's mic

- through a headset

- through a MacBook pushing the audio (note: just the audio NOT the call itself) through FaceTime / WiFi (which by the way I find to be a really comfortable option when working at my desk)

I have tried this with people I can safely experiment on, and they confirm the 'phone mic' option is by far the worst.

Just before taking a deep breath and going for repair, I switched off noise cancelling in Accessibility, and switched LTE to 'data only' - the first couple of calls from the phone mic have gone very well. I will hold on for a few more days and let you know if the problem is resolved (at least for me).

Good luck everyone - I share your pain and frustration with problems caused by what is marketed and priced as a top-end phone.... :/

While that may work, unfortunately we're still dealing with a phone that isn't produced properly. I too am having the "I can't hear what you said, can you repeat that?" conversations with clients and family members. I've tried dusting out the microphone, cleaning the phone, blowing into it, and switching on and off all of the recommended google ideas to no avail.

I've had this issue since taking delivery of my iPhone 8+ last December -- seems when I initiate a phone call the microphone simply does not work 25-33% of the time, with or without the Moment case I'm now using. If I switch to speakerphone mode and back real quick that typically resolves the issue on a call but, for F's sake, Apple, acknowledge and resolve this issue!

I have had the same issue with my Iphone 8 since I got it in April. At first I thought it was my cell phone case when I first got my phone so I switched it which only temporarily worked. Now its happening again with a different cell phone case. My phone seems completely fine with no case on. But what are the chances that multiple different cell phone cases that are made for my specific phone are the issue? Super annoying and I dont feel comfortable always having to take my cases off to talk on the phone. Defeats the purpose.

Hello 🙂

iPhone 8 Plus 256GB here is my story

Last week , after a long chat with Apple , I got an appointment for service etc.

today I got to the Apple Store Berlin Ku'damm where I am situated now

Apple Personnel = AP

AP_1 meets me and checks me in, so I go and wait at a table

AP_2 finds me after 5' and gets my serial and an explanation of the issue

AP_3 moves me to back tables and diagnoses the problem of the device

AP_3 explains contract etc. informs that I shall take an email the following day so I can pick the device up

The AP_3 asked me to sign on the iPad screen with my finger, they don't even have Pencils for that

They are going to change the screen part and then give me back the device

The warranty is not renewed it will remain for one year and if the new part fails after the expiration I have to pay for a new one

Here I got no new iPhone just a screen exchange and in my question whether it stays waterproof or not he barely said yes

I delivered the iPhone in perfect conditions not a scratch, all except the microphone work greatly

When I get it back I shall post an update

For a device which costs that much money such a failure after 5 months of careful usage it is a disaster

Right now I am cancelling subscriptions to apps and services that do not have counterpart for other mobile OS

iMac purchase plan is cancelled

Apple does good devices if one is lucky; I do not like gambling

I just orientate to a different budget for the next device and ecosystem so as to avoid bad investments

At least next time I shall spent 1/3 of the money I did with this phone and worry less about fixing something which is presented as a very high product

I do not want to be unfair as with this phone I did a lot of things fast and easy

The point is its price tag and selling category do not allow to the producer to make similar mistakes

Absolutely no margin for bad products in the hands of customers who choose Apple for reliability

There is no excuse for Apple

Update

This morning I got an email from the Ku'Damm Apple Store and the iPhone was ready

50' later I was there

I checked in with a AP_4

AP_5 arrived and explained that everything works fine now : the screen was replaced and also the battery

the total cost 180Euro covered by the 1 year warranty

AP_5 very quickly let me alone with my iPhone

First thing I did was to say ''Hey Siri'' and she responded

Battery health 100%, the previous one was at 95% , also strange in 5 months of easy usage it lost 5% of its capacity

Anyways I am pleased to get the device back

Nevertheless , I stick to what I wrote yesterday

I have this problem as well with my iPhone 8Plus. Apple Support and the people at their Genius Bar have not been helpful at all and refuse to acknowledge there is a problem. I have already changed phones once as no one could hear me, and now with the 2nd replacement phone the same problem has started happening again after several months. Even if I shout down the phone they say my voice keeps fading in and out, to the extent that a conversation is impossible.

I have had various iPhones from the 5 onwards, and have never had any problems. So it's not me. Frustratingly the microphones work when I do the recommended tests/trouble shooting, but when it comes to making calls this phone is USELESS.

I have another appointment on Sunday 2 December 2018 at the Genius bar and will just hope they do something about it or replace my phone (yet again)

Thanks that worked! Going into cellular settings and changing LTE to “data only” fixed the problem for me. Everyone should try this first to see if that helps them too. Now I’m guessing it’s a data / connection problem, and not the microphones.

I also turned off noise cancelling and enabled WiFi calling, in case these setting changes help too.

I’ve had my iPhone 8 for over a year, and only started having this problem since the day I recently moved to a new place. I didn’t change the sim, reset the phone or settings, do any updates, or do a factory install.

I am facing the exact same issue with my iphone 8, which i bought 1 year and 1 month ago from the US. All of a sudden the speaker started mulfactioning (i.e. no sound when receiving calls, no alarm, unable to play videos, etc). Also, at times the screens blacks out and the device restarts on its own. I sent the phone to the local apple service office, and they called me back today just to tell me that the device can't be fixed and I need to pay 400euro for a replacement (half the money I paid last year to buy it). I concider this to be unacceptable really given that I have this phone for only 1 year and the damage wasn't caused from my side ( did not drop it, no contact with water, always in an original apple case and a screen protector).

I hope your problem is fixable!

Same problem only worse. I bought a pre owned iphone 8 still under warranty. No one can hear me clearly on cell calls, not on mic either. Sent it back to Apple, they cannot duplicate my problem., I told them to do a voice memo as you can hear background noise on it compared to my SE phone, Sorry cannot duplicate problem, Apple tech support via phone tells me is may be a carrier issue, My SE works perfect with same sim card but, No one can hear me on phone calls. Send it back to Apple for a second time after long arduous session...Result? cannot replicate issue.....!!! I use my phone for my business and I have spent over 10-12 hours with Apple warranty and going back and forth to have it shipped and waiting home for fedex signature required delivery. For what?? technicians at Apple can't listen to a voice memo and discern a problem??? I can't use this device as a phone.....HOrrible, horrible, horrible. yuk
