iphone 6 returned with shattered screen and no longer working

Has anyone else had problems sending in their iPhone for battery replacement and being told it needs additional repairs? I sent mine in and the third party repair shop said I needed $129 in additional repairs. I declined them saying it wasn’t worth it. They sent back my iPhone 6 with a shattered screen and it also won’t turn on or work. When I sent it in it was working and has a small crack in the upper right hand corner. The one sent back doesn’t even have the original crack but a completely shattered screen in the middle of the screen. What gives? Is this retaliation for turning down the $129 additional repair I didn’t need?

What country are you in? There are no AASPs authorized for repairs on phones in the US.

The screen has to be removed in order to access and change the battery. Although you may have had a small crack in the corner when removing the screen the pressure used can easily cause the crack to spread as glass is prone to do that. This is why Apple will tell you up front that you will have to pay to repair the screen prior to your battery replacement. The 3rd party shop should have done the same. So pay the $129 and get your phone repaired.

AASPs do service iPhones. I'm having a hard time with Apple's website trying to find locations though. I enter my zip code in the San Francisco Bay Area and I get Miami. I enter any city in my area (San Francisco, CA for example) and it gives me six locations in San Juan (including two Best Buys) that will service an iPhone.

This place says they're Apple authorized to service iPhones in my area.

However, from the sound of it, this shop gave back a cracked screen iPhone (with a nonfunctioning display) that didn't even have the original crack in the corner.

I didn't think there are any AASPs in the US either. Apple would in the case where a customer in the US is too far from an Apple Store, send them a box to ship the phone directly to Apple. I've never seen where Apple directed anyone in the US to a 3rd party shop. Perhaps the OP is not in the US?

I just got curious and checked with Apple Support where I could send in my iPhone 7 for a new battery. I got 19 choices, and 12 of them aren't Apple Stores. More Best Buys than any other AASP, and I wouldn't let them take a screwdriver to my phone. Some even have appointments for today. There's even an Apple Store in San Francisco that has an appointment for today.

The battery can not be replaced without removing the display. If the screen was cracked, you must pay for an out of warranty replacement of the screen.

It's possible that they attempted to do it without notifying you ahead of time, and shattered the display in the process. Either way, though, you're going to have to get the display replaced.

No AASP's in my area can service iPhones. Given that we only have a description of the what the original crack looked like we have no way of telling whether that is the OPs original screen or not. Perhaps you can enlighten us on how you determined that it was switched?

The OP mentioned this twice.

I just think it’s weird that the iPhone I sent in had a one inch crack in the top right corner and the iPhone they sent back is completely shattered in the middle of the screen and no sign of the original crack in the top right corner.

I suppose it's possible that they repaired the glass, then dropped it. However, wouldn't you find it suspicious that a device would be returned "unrepaired" but without any signs of the original damage?

I believe what the OP is finding unusual is that it doesn't work at all when it did before sending it in, and there are no signs of the cracked glass that was there before - only shattering at a different part of the glass.

And yes that's the case of an official Apple battery service with any damaged glass. Maybe they can manage to remove it, but they still have to put it back in place by pressing hard on the glass.

This is what I think happened. I sent my iPhone in for battery replacement and the iPhone had a small crack in it. So the repair shop replaced it thinking I would pay the $129 anyways. But when I refused to pay the extra $129 they smashed the screen and sent it back to me. I am just ****** about this whole situation. All I know is when I sent it in almost a month ago it was working and had a one inch crack in the top right corner where it didn’t affect what you were looking at. When it was returned the screen was smashed and it won’t turn on or take a charge. It was an authorized Apple repair shop. It was sent to a place in Elk Grove, California.

You can't really do anything about the appointments now. The issue is unprecedented demand. The vast majority of people getting these batteries don't particularly need one. When Apple started to indicate that passing the diagnostic wasn't a bar to receiving a new battery at this reduced price, that started the floodgates. I've heard that maybe 90% of people coming in have batteries that are passing the diagnostic test, but want a new battery nonetheless since Apple isn't turning them down.

They told me my battery is still at 93% and was OK, but ios was slowing me down to 600MHz. What am I supposed to do? Live with less than half the advertised performance because my local Apple genius said my battery was fine?

Sounds fishy... what is the name of the place where you sent it? AASPs that are authorized to work on iPhones in the US are few and far between... Some Best Buy Stores and do it, and I believe the carriers are authorized to replace devices (don't think they can do screen replacements though)...

Apparently the only place in Elk Grove, CA that services iPhones is Best Buy #349. I would have insisted on the closest Apple Store even if it took longer.
