Swashes and ligatures are always in the extended areas of a font, and rarely, if ever have a keystroke assigned to them. To access them, you need to use a character palette that will show the variations. Apple's built-in Emoji & Symbols viewer will do that. Photoshop, InDesign, Quark XPress and other professional apps have their own OpenType palettes.
For instance, here I've opened the Garamond Pro set and typed a simple line in Photoshop. With the Glyph palette open, I choose Garamond Pro, Bold Italic. I can now peruse the entire font to pick out ligatures and other items from the entire font.
For apps that don't have their own glyph palette, a dedicated viewer such as Ultra Character Map is far easier than Apple's built-in palette viewer.
