contacts on mac says no cards
MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), Contacts problem
Have you tried turning off Contacts under iCloud System Preferences (untick box), it should ask if you wish to save data on your machine, say no. Wait a minute then open the Contacts App and check if it's empty, if not, delete manually, then close. Lastly go back and turn on iCloud Contacts (re tick the box) so your data can sync back down again from the cloud, wait a minute then open Contacts and see if your data is back again.
“Sorry if this obvious, but is there some text in the search box?“
Thanks. No, there is no text in the search box. But good q nonetheless.
“Wait a minute then open the Contacts App and check if it's empty, if not, delete manually,”
Can I check please? Do you mean check if Contacts has any data in it - in this case meaning contact names as cards are not present anyway. When you say ‘delete manually’ do you mean remove all names, groups etc so that Contacts has no data in it?
Sorry to be specific.
Cheers
Pete
Yep, all Contacts are fine across iCloud, iPhone and iPad. As I detailed, entries can be made on any of these platforms and sync will happen fine including on OS X except that in the OS X database only the card’s name will show, none of the details will be available.
Will follow the TM suggestion
Many thanks.
You are using advanced Mac cleaner in your Mac see this manual method to remove each file of it , I suggested malware bytes anti malware for Mac because it removes the files of the app in moments and both manual method or using malware bytes deletes it .

You have to enter it correctly the app is removed permanently with its remnants also .
If you have installed the older version the remnants of it could be different .
Macs are not compatible with third party applications , softwares, even App Store apps ( outsourced ) or any kind of anti virus .
In case they are installed these issues will always occur .
Creating a new user account is very easy ( yes the first user account can get corrupted or glitches will start ) and if the data is stored in iCloud server the user is not be worried for its mails , notes , contacts , etc they get download once again , the only condition is open the application for some time say an hour or two if the data is huge and connectivity to wifi is essential .
The old user account can be deleted once you are sure that each and every thing is saved in your new user account .
Generally Apple ID is kept same as web mail address ( gmail services work fine but some prefer other services ) and the user must be signed in with Apple ID in iCloud account .
The contacts will take time to download if they are large in number and the user must keep the application opened .
The login items is always kept as empty not a single app is to be saved here and what is PIA , there is need to save iTunes here , you can use spotlight to open iTunes , good Mac users keep safari extensions as off .
I understand that you wish me to remove Advanced Mac Cleaner amongst other items. I haven't actually used AMC since installing it but I do understand that these types of softwares sometimes come with attendant issues. By the same logic, why should malwarebytes be any more trustworthy?
Yes, interesting that one of the main culprits identified here (Advanced Mac Cleaner) hadn’t spread itself around in the new account and was virtually absent in Application Support, Logs, Cache etc., Following the manual removal instructions for AMC in my old account it was certainly everywhere.
I certainly see your point about careful vetting of new apps but not using Adobe products could be a big ask for some people I know!
I’m going to have to upgrade my computer in the near future - I’m starting to wonder if moving to Windows wouldn’t be more cost effective. If the Apple ecology is just as sensitive to incursion what’s the point of spending all the extra cash?
I don’t think there is a hard or fast rule on what you should do with respect to loading Apps, because each wants something different from there machines, I just believe a little common sense can go a long way towards limiting issues.
I used Adobe only as an example of a programme that from prior experience seemed to be somewhat “free” on how much of itself it spread around, that in itself probably doesn’t result in any problems because it’s more than likely well coded, neither the less it can still be trouble some to remove if you later want to do so because of that fact.
Another is Toast which I admit is still on my system because years ago I produced dvd’s of home videos, but now it’s all streaming so the App is largely redundant, should I try and remove it, not sure, because again it appears to be all over the place. I’ve left things alone at the moment because all performs well and also from the fear that in trying to get rid of it I could do more harm than good.
I don’t believe macOS is any more sensitive to this issue than say Windows, in fact I’ve not had to reinstall my system for well over 5 years now, which can’t be said for my nephew’s Windows machine which seems as though he has to do something every 12 months!
But systems are getting more complicated and as such may be more prone to these sort of conflicts arising when pushed, lets face it, you don’t have to have any third party software installed and issues can still exist just because it’s so involved by being connected to “everything”, just compare what was going on under the hood of Snow Leopard to that of High Sierra now, it really is caulk and cheese.
I have the same problem but here is a little something interesting... I can share a contact/vCard via mail and all the vCard information is there!. Additionally, my iMessage has no contact info displayed but has "Maybe:" then a contact name displayed.
I have tried restoring contacts from iCloud, updating software, restarting. I have all my contacts on my MacBook, iPad and iPhone. I also don't have any information displayed in my "Me" card.
I also did an etrecheck.

I am pretty sure that I don't have any contact names in iMessage (on my Mac only) because I don't have any info in my contacts! Makes sense... I am just kind of going crazy with this... especially since I can email the vCard and the information is there! Ugh!!! I wish someone had the remedy. Wish me luck!
Thanks.
I FIXED MY PROBLEM!!!
Found this solution from another user on an old board from Mountain Lion and it worked for me.
Quit Contacts.
In System Preferences uncheck all items in iCloud. From the Finder menu click >Option Go which shows the Home Library Folder in the pull down menu. Open the Folder Application Support find the Folder Address Book and Trash it with all its content. (YES! I DID THAT!)
Return to the System Prefs re-activate Contacts, mail and anything else previously checked.
Then (after iCloud reloads) login to your iCloud account on your browser. Settings all the way down on the bottom left. Choose "Restore Contacts". After it finishes updating, I opened contacts and everything was repopulated!!
Additionally, all my iMessage names are back (just as I suspected)!
I so relieved this worked. I can get something else done now...
Hope this helps someone!
Cheers!
I also run 'Informant' v1.02 (50397) - is this some app used in Mac , use https://etrecheck.com/
And post the results .
You do not need to install anything to remove "Advanced Mac Cleaner". Follow the instructions posted in this Discussion:
Glad you managed to sort, the search can be very useful sometimes, and it's surprising how so many issues have a habit of coming around again!
TM could be you best option from what was discussed in the other post, but tygb comment on removing certain third party apps is a good idea as well.
This issue didn’t start after installing or running one of those apps by any chance, some can really mess with your system.
As a general rule it’s best not to use any “cleaners”, I do occasionally use iTrash but always check which files it’s going to remove first and only allow if they are definitely associated with the app I’m trying to delete, otherwise I untick and leave them on my system.
I believe because your iDevices and Cloud all show the data complete the issue does probably exist with in your Mac itself, but tracking it down specifically could be hard and time consuming, hopefully TM will make it easier by restoring a previous state before all this started to happen.
I am extremely grateful for all of the time and thought that has been put into this discussion. I now have a new account set up which is running everything well and I have successfully transferred across iCloud settings etc., I accept that according to Etrecheck there may be bigger underlying problems that will inevitably show themselves in time the more I use this new account. I also see the value of regularly checking my computer for malware and that there are proprietary apps out there to assist me in this (although, if I use Malwarebytes, whatever its provenence, won't I be using a third party app?).
Nonetheless, there appears to be a much bigger agenda underlying this discussion which I'm finding really challenging - namely, that there are 'good' Mac users, that never use third party Apps and who only configure their Macs in one, acceptable way. So, I'm confused.
For example, I use Ableton Live for music composition, I also use Plex for media management as well as Google Chrome as my main browser. Conversely, I still use Mail as my main email client, Calendar and iTunes etc etc., I use these apps, Apple or otherwise, because they are the best for the job that I've found (in my opinion). Up until this version of OS X I have never had any of the problems that have come up in this discussion and I have never heard of this 'exclusive' Mac orthodoxy, although I am aware of the additional hoops that Apple make us jump through in order to open apps from third parties.
Is this the 'majority view now - that we should stay exclusively 'in-house' or suffer the consequences?
