iTunes freezes when I click on Recently Added

Since a couple of weeks, my iTunes in my iMac freezes when I click on Recently Added. Everything else works fine, but I can't seem to acces that view anymore.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

Thanks skye1

Did exactly the same as you. New iTunes didn't fix the issue, I signed out and back in.

iCloud Music Library automatically started updating for about a minute, and now clicking Recently Added works without freezing!

Hi mivhielveenstra,

I understand that when trying to view your Recently Added tracks on iTunes on your iMac, it stops responding. I'm happy to provide some help for this issue.

I recommend first creating a new library, then adding a few tracks and seeing if this issue continues:

Open a different iTunes Library file or create a new one - Apple Support

If everything is working properly in the new library, then you can go ahead and download your purchases to continue using this working library:

Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books from the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, and App Store - Apple Support

If a new library doesn't help, try testing this out in safe mode:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

I just now noticed an auto-update to iTunes version 12.7.4.76 on Mar 30-2018, for MacOS which has perhaps made the difference.

If you still don't have luck there you could do what I did by accepting there's still a bug, to which you can simply turn off that sidebar list option by hovering the mouse cursor over the "library" title header to reveal the "Edit" link, which when clicked allows you to check/uncheck items including "Recently added" from in that side-bar list. I did this as a workaround to prevent me from getting annoyed at it and fidgeting with it or inadvertently clicking on it. It's far more likely the update fixed it of course but maybe after trying that the above will give you some relief! Its even possible that rebooting the o/s and/or iTunes a few times may have flushed the cache. Not sure.

I should also note this could have been in conjunction with my having signed out of my iCloud ID in iTunes via the "Account" menu option and then signing back in and going to the menu flow; File>Library>Update iCloud Music Library and letting iTunes rebuild my Apple Music library, which yes is a pain but made less so by letting it run whilst you go out or overnight etc.

After I did all this it's working again.

Hope this helps, good luck!~

Try signing out of your iCloud ID in iTunes via the "Account" menu option. This should allow you to click on “Recently added” without it freezing (check that) as I think the issue is to do with an error in how iTunes updates recently added content into the library, for which I dont know the cause of.

In any case I think once you click on the recently added section it should not freeze up anymore and you should only see purchased Music, if you had any and you also should not see any content from an Apple Music subscription if you have one. This I believe clears a cache in the function that updates the content you’ve accessed through Apple Music subscription or music otherwise added from an external storage or even purchased. Any of which I think may be prone to a bug, so signing out should prevent iTunes from checking for updates to its recently added music. Which is why i think after signing back in it makes iTunes re-establish all the libraries content.

So going to the menu flow; “File>Library>Update iCloud Music Library” makes iTunes rebuild the entire music library (including recently added) to be viewable correctly everywhere again.

As I said earlier to Skye1 this is a pain to do to rebuild but made less so by letting it run whilst you go out or overnight etc and the fact it probably is the likely issue to be fixed and not the recent update I would try this as it seems like the last possible thing from a process of elimination for solutions, at least I can see. In Skye1’s case I don’t know exactly what they did; if just updating or also the above actions I suggested.

Also Im running the latest version of MacOS so results may vary if on another system or software environment.

Hope it helps food luck :)

ok, I finally fixed the issue on my side. Downloading the new iTunes did not seem to rectify the issue. Instead, I signed out of my iCloud account and then signed back in (both through the Account drop down). I then noticed an orange exclamation in the top right corner that says "The iCloud music library can't be updated right now". I hit the little refresh symbol and after thinking for a while the issue has been solved.
