retiming a clip without echo

I would like to slow down a clip (slowing both its audio and visual). I am using the "retime" option under "modify." But when i do that, the voice seems to gain an echo, as if one track is going slower, but another is staying at the old speed. help?

It's hard to say without hearing this particular instance, but 'slowing' a voice recording that has been made in a natural ambience room can have such an effect.

The near instantaneous reflections of sound at normal speed, are stretched out at slower speeds. This can create an exagerrated reverberation (not strickly echo) effect. The space, the room sounds bigger, like the speaker is in a hall.

This might be nothing to do with your issue but I thought I'd mention it.
