Macbook Pro Keyboard completely unresponsive.

Problem:

The keyboard on my MacBook is completely unresponsive. No keys register when pressed. The backlight still works fine and the touch bar is intact as well. The trackpad also is fine. I had to connect an external keyboard to just enter my password and write this question up. This laptop was fine last night while I was watching Netflix and it died after I fell asleep. I woke up today and plugged it in to charge and when I got to the login screen I found that keyboard didn't work at all.

I got this laptop in December and really don't want to drive 50 minutes to my nearest apple store to have this fixed... Any one know of a fix to this problem or what could be causing it?

Hey there, John!

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. If I understand your issue, the built-in keyboard on your MacBook Pro does not respond, even though the Touch Bar and trackpad do. I would be happy to help troubleshoot with you!

To start, I would recommend resetting the System Management Controller (also know as the SMC), which can help with keyboard issues. You can get more information on the SMC, and how to reset it for your particular computer, in this article: How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support .

If resetting the SMC does not solve the issue, the next step would be to boot into safe mode and test the issue there. Booting to safe mode takes a bit longer than usual, because the computer runs a series of checks and repairs what it can during that boot process. Sometimes, this by itself can solve an issue, and in general safe mode is great to help isolate the issue further. The following article explains safe mode in more detail, and walks you through how to boot to it: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support .

Should the issue continue after testing in safe mode, I would suggest booting to macOS Recovery, and checking if the keyboard works there: About macOS Recovery - Apple Support .

Don't hesitate to respond back if you still need some help. If you do, please just include your results from the above testing.

Cheers!
