I have an old iPod, model A1040. I think the hard drive has crashed. Would I be able to get it repaired, or at least recover the music on it?

Cannot update ipod classic I recently updated to Big Sur 11.5.1 on a mid-2014 Macbook Pro. Since then I haven't been able to update my iPod Classic and in fact something happened which caused all my music to be wiped from the iPod. When I connect my iPod appears in Finder and if I go to System Info, it also shows there - however it gets to a point where Software: Loading.... appears in Finder and it then hangs indefinitely - I've had it connected like this for several hours and nothing happens. If I try to eject, it won't let me, so I've ended up shutting down the Mac and then removing the cable - after I did that once, I noticed all my music had gone, but apart from that the iPod itself looks fine. I've reset the iPod a few times (Menu/centre button), but that hasn't changed anything. I should note that my music lives on an external USB drive, but that's never caused update problems before. How to restore my iPod Classic 160 I have an iPod Classic 160. I connected it to my Macbook Pro to sync some podcasts but the iPod did not show up either on iTunes (12.7.4.80) or on the desktop. The iPod itself said it was connected and to eject before disconnecting.Eventually iTunes put up a message saying that the iPod was corrupted, and to either disconnect/reconnect or to restore. I tried the solutions in that order. However even when the software was extracted the iPod would not restore because it was 'busy'.I got as far as the homepage, and settings tell me that I have 0 space free, 143gb used but none of it is music, it is all 'other'.I've tried all the support help topic suggestions but to no avail.

Ipod Classic I have an iPod Classic and when I recently plugged it into my computer to sync it, all the music was wiped from it. Now it's got a software 'loading' on it and no music. I did a hard restart on the iPod but nothing changed. Help!

See Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support. Apple are not interested in servicing your obsolete device. If the hard drive has truly failed then that makes data recovery most unlikely. See Recover media from an iPod for suggestions.
