On a 27" iMac, Mid 2011, OS 10.13.3. Its running slow and showing the spinning ball when launching new apps or opening files. This iMac does have several User logins that I can delete if needed.

Below are the etrecheck results. I would appreciate any advice you can provide based on these results.

Thanks.

Taking this iMac from a previous user at my office

The best way would be to start with a clean slate; a fresh install of the OS on an erased disk. No traces of previous use. Can you make a copy (or Time Machine backup) of all your important documents, e-mail, applications, etc. to allow for such a fresh start? I don’t know how long you have had the Mac in use, so it might be a lot of work, or very little work. The alternative is hunting down the weird ones one-by-one.

ChmodBPF is easy: EtreCheck lists the path. Remove the file in Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems/

EtreCheck mentions ‘dymo’ multiple times. Perhaps a Dymo LabelWriter printer was installed?

EtreCheck mentions ‘IDrive’ components. Perhaps that cloud backup system was installed but no longer in use?

EtreCheck mentions ‘xquartz’ from 2012. That is part of the X11 cross platform code that was part of Mac OS X until Lion. Current version is from 2016, and no longer part of the default OS. Perhaps the only reason that launch agent/launch deamon is running, is that the Mac once ran an older OS.

EtreCheck mentions several Adobe launch agents/launch deamons. Which is perhaps needed for the creative apps to run, although some components may be old/from previous versions.

EtreCheck mentions ‘Intel HAXM’ components, which may have been part of an Android emulator.

EtreCheck mentions ‘Xamarin’ components, software to develop mobile apps.

EtreCheck mentions ‘VirtualBox’ components, software to run another OS on top of macOS.

While all those should be removed if you have no use for them, I see no reason to suspect a specific one of them as reason for the slowdown.

The launch agents and launch deamons are okay if they are needed for software that you do use. But for software that you do not use, those components should not be there and should not consume CPU cycles. But with older machines, the appropriate uninstallers are likely nowhere to be found.

Thanks for the quick response.

Taking this iMac from a previous user at my office so not sure what some of your suggestions mean.

There was a clock face by the iCloud drive in Finder. I checked and could only see on iCloud account, but it showed over 14GBs of content to be uploaded. I signed out of iCloud but didn't seem to make much difference.

Where would I find the ChmodBPF file to delete it?

And where would I find the "old launch agents and deamons"?

Thanks for your help!

Stuck iCloud - This machine has a large number of pending iCloud transfers.

Could it be that some parts have a different Apple ID? Check your iCloud settings, and other places that may have your Apple ID registered. Make sure it all matches and has an active logged in status. Do you have the iCloud Drive in Finder? Does it show a clock face for certain files? The ‘bird’ process (your top CPU eater) handles iCloud transfers. "bird" process is taking over

Some other stuff: Your Flash is listed as 29.0.0.134, while Adobe says 29.0.0.113 is current. Unless you are part of a beta program, that could be suspicious.

ChmodBPF Startup Item - Do you need to capture network packets all the time?

A lot of really old launch agents and deamons. Do you still use the these tools, or are they relics?

You seem to have a Java 7 (2012). Uninstall it or update it.
