can not sync photos with ios 11.3 and itunes 12.7.4

Thanks for this write-up with detailed explanation. This is exactly what I also did to get a large photo library back on an iPhone X. But (as you already hinted at), this only works one time. Once you add add'l photos/folders and try to sync again, it's back to getting stuck on "reading photos". Hope Apple fixes soon!!

Actually, it is still successfully syncing and will continue to do so until the database gets into the same state that causes it to 'stop' syncing.. usually a few weeks with the amount of photos I'm syncing.

My question is what happens to Camera Roll and PhotosStream in your process? Does it get re-populated with the existing pix also?

It's awesome that everyone is trying to help one another here. Kinda ridiculous to have paid $1150 for 256 gig but cannot add pictures to it!

As a followup, I tried to sync again today with new pictures. It has been stuck at the "reading photos" for about 7.5 hours. It seems that the method allows some to do the sync again and others not.

The Samsung S9+ is starting to sound like my next move if this doesn't get sorted out.

For me, my device repopulated the folders - I'm using Mac. New items are getting populated on successive syncs also, but, as happened to me before, the issue comes back once the on-device database has the issue again. I'd happily ditch the iphone if I wasn't tied in to apple's crappy bloody ecosystem.

You probably all received around May 22 a promotional email from Apple entitled “Do more with iPad than ever before“. Only another lie or is it another sign of incompetence? Apple hid the truth for the slowing down of older iPhones, and they’re hiding the truth again. I can’t believe that they could not find a fix in 2 months, and since they’re not saying anything, this whole thing can only be intentional. I’ve given up calling and trying umpteen options that never work, and I’m giving up my iPad, and telling hundreds of students all the issues I’ve had with syncing since the end of 2017, but also that my first iPad mini had to be replaced because the camera wasn’t working, and my second iPad mini was replaced twice!! If you add the software problems, it’s easy to imagine the countless hours I have wasted on apple’s gadgets.

been at it since 4 pm... 8:20 pm now.... hangs at reading photos... finally goes to analyzing photo library.. to waiting to apply changes... then stops and says sync failed to finish... i have had it with apple... im done

Wish it was for me. Starting to think there is something wrong with my phone. Did all updates. Sync still will not work. Photos , music. Anything. Will not work. Going to try my iPad tomorrow night.. if that works.. restore phone ..

Has anything improved with the latest iTunes and iOS updates? I haven’t done any updates for over a month.

Did sync my iPhone last week and added only a few photos and some music. The sync took three hours.

Anybody tried IOS 11.4 with iTunes 12.7.5? it was release in my country this week, reluctant to try as it works with 12.7.3 and 11.3.1. Kindly update if the new 12.7.5 is the long awaiting bug fix for long photo synchronization.

Same here - I spent at least 4 hours on the phone diagnosing the issue with apple.. AND I STILL HAVE THE ISSUE!

I also couldn't find any reference to this fix in the update notes for ios or itunes -- given what a major issue this is for me. They are crafty sly bastar''s. I have advised them that I will be returning both iphones under consumer law as 'not fit for purpose'. You have 5 years to do this from purchase date.

Glad to hear. I have been using this method for several years now when I have this problem. No need to keep deleting the iPod photo cache, etc. and resyncing everything which takes time and only seems to work reliably once anyways. This does add a couple extra steps and syncs (with the test folders) but seems to do the trick for me and is much quicker.

Still will not work for me .... I’ve tried every work around on here aside from downgrading and restoring , restoring as a new device... I’m scared if I restore I will lose EVERYTHING on my devices... I’m disgusted with the whole thing

I tried this.... I have successfully deleted every single picture on my phone almost 22000 , not even under photos anymore.. and nothing under memories now... yet.... shows the photos still taking up 52.5 gigs on my phone... and the sync still cancels ... so I now have lost them all ...

I haven't followed that particular path, but upgrading from one build to another with several versions in between shouldn't introduce any additional problems that aren't already part and parcel of the latter build.
