can not sync photos with ios 11.3 and itunes 12.7.4

I downloaded itunes 12.7.4 and ios 11.3 and now I can not sync my photos to my iphone X, Iphone 8 plus, Ipod Touch or Ipad Pro with my PC running Windows 10. It gets to Step 5 of 6 and just sits there frozen at "Reading Photo's from "Pictures" and will not finish the transfer of the photos to my devices and finish the sync. I did not have a problem until the new operating system was released. Anyone having this issue and is there a fix??

iPhone X, Windows 10

So until Apple fixes this, here is a workaround: Downgrade to iTunes 12.7.3! It definitely is an iTunes 12.7.4-issue. After downgrading to 12.7.3, everything is working again.

So you have to manually uninstall 12.7.4 and download 12.7.3 from Apple (just google for the version number, you'll find it).

Problem is that you have to go back to an auto-saved iTunes Library file from when you had 12.7.3 installed. So after installing but before starting 12.7.3 you have to first rename the current "iTunes Library.itl" file to something like "iTunes Library 12-7.4.itl" and then go to the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and take the presumably latest autosaved itl-file and move it one folder up and rename it to "iTunes Library.itl".

(Of course this means that you'll lose all changes you made to your iTunes library since updating to 12.7.4)

Downgrading is relatively straightforward, at least on Windows. You would only lose the changes you made to your library since you installed 12.7.4.76.

To revert to 12.7.3.46 see the iTunes installers section of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for download links for recent builds direct from Apple, instructions on removing the current build before you reinstall, and advice on rolling back the iTunes database.

Downgrading iTunes has fixed the issue. Not going to update to iTunes until they release a new version & acknowledge this has been fixed.

I’m not annoyed that I couldn't sync photos, what really has annoyed me is Apple refusing to acknowledge it is a fault with iTunes. It’s affected enough users for them to be aware the fault is with iTunes & say a fix is on the way. The solutions offered by tech support are apologetically pointless & I suggest people either downgrade to the previous version of iTunes (be aware of risks with library versions) or wait & hope Apple releases a fix soon.

Hi all

I have had this frustrating problem synching photos from iTunes 12.7.4 to my new iPhone X.

My Apple senior adviser suggested a very simple workaround which doesn't involve downgrading to iTunes 12.7.3.

All he suggested I do was find the subfolder in my main Photos folder called "iPod Photo cache" and drop and drag it to my desktop for safe keeping. Then try the sync again as usual. It worked perfectly and now all my 18,000 photos are on my iphone X in their correct albums/subfolders.

I guess the photo cache conflicts with the itunes software, so the solution is to find somewhere else for the cache to be stored while you copy your photos.

Good luck!

Roll back to iTunes 12.7.3.46. See the iTunes installers section of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for direct download links and advice on reverting to a pre-upgrade copy of your iTunes library. You lose the changes made to the library since you installed 12.7.4.76, but there is also advice on making the library reflect the current content of the media folder.

I finally broke down and did the downgrade to 12.7.3.46:

  • Downloaded 64 bit iTunes 12.7.3.46 from here
  • Uninstalled 12.7.4.80 following instructions.
  • Rebooted PC
  • Installed 12.7.3.46
  • Rebooted PC
  • Renamed \iTunes\iTunes Library.itl to backup name.
  • Copied most recent \iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries\iTunes Library 2018-04-06.itl (your name will differ) to iTunes Library.itl in parent folder
  • Renamed Pictures\iPod Photo Cache folder
  • Rebooted iPad connected to PC
  • Ran iTunes - photo sync started right away
  • Update:
    • iPad photo sync keeps crashing.
    • After rebooting the iPad, it seems to pick up where it left off.

I manage to sync everything back to my iphone after following instructions from philipp273 remedy. Roll back itunes to 12.7.3 and everything is in order again. Having said that I think Apple should really have a patch to address this. Really thankful to philipp273 for providing the online solution. It is amazing that apple support could not identify this issue. I went to my country local apple store on 2 occassion and was told to purchase the 200GB icloud storage to address my issue! I contacted apple (Consultant based in Australia) and he even asked me to reset my iphone but to no avail. I really make me think thrice if i should promptly update my software in future!. Good luck

The blurb Apple attached to the update did not say it was issued to solve this problem so I didn't expect it to have done that. Hopefully they are still working on a fix but they would not hold up issuing a fix for other problems whilst still trying to sort the photo problem out.

Try ErgoEdbo's method of deleting (or moving to another folder) the iPod photo cache. Attach phone, unselect synch photos and synch the phone, detach from computer then re-boot phone. Re-attach phone, synch photos. Might be worth just synching over the most important albums first as the initial synch will take a while to re-add all the photos. Today I added 3 albums containing 34 photos after downloading the OS update and it took around 10 minutes to do a back up and synch those photos.

The method I used to get this working again involved clearing iPod photo cache, attaching phone and removing all photos with the first synch, disconnect phone and re-boot it, then re-synch photos to the phone. That has been working for me on iPhone 7plus, iPad Pro 9.7" for most of April. I only have max of 3000 photos on there and currently when a standard synch reaches the photos it takes longer than normal but never more than 10 minutes (but some times I'm either adding no photos or just one or two).

Hello All,

yes, I faced the same problem and answer philipp273 provided is correct. just wanted to add as most of the users are not tech savvy. I have windows 10.

1- Uninstall and install 12.7.3 version

2- when you 'll open, it 'll give error "The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." which Philip has mentioned but he has just described what to do, where to do, i was confused so writing it.

or you can find this link

https://www.technipages.com/itunes-the-file-itunes-library-itl-cannot-be-read-fi x

follow the steps and you are all set

cheers

Are your photos gone? They may not be in albums but I believe for most people clicking on the photos tab at the bottom of the app screen shows all your photos in date order.

Try this:

1. delete the ipod photos cache folder

2. uncheck photo synchronisation and synch the device acknowledging this will remove all synched photos.

3. Detach your device from the computer and do a hard reset of the device

4. Synch the device but this time tick the boxes for the photo folders you want to synch (might be worth just doing a few to start with if you have lots of pictures - my almost 3,000 took a while but less than half an hour)

So I may have found a fix to this. Rather then syncing the whole ‘My Pictures/Photos’ folder select only a few.

Exit iTunes and unplug Apple device

Delete iPod photo cache folder in My Pictures folder

Open iTunes

Select File>add folder to library

Select only required folders and OK

Once Photos are imported connected your Apple device

Select the device and press the photos tab/select ‘selected folders’ and select the folders you want

Presto it should work

I have a hunch iTunes it trying to import files in the iPod cache, so when you select all folders it includes this and loops.

Hope it works for everyone!
