late 2012 iMac slow

Any help here would be amazing, I'm at a total loss and feel like I've tried everything.

Refresh install of High Sierra and this iMac is still running really slow. It's getting to the point where it's unusable and my (work) MacBook Early 2015 is lightening fast compared. This iMac won't even keep up with my typing this out!

Not sure if the EtreCheck helps or if it's a hard drive or memory failing issue but I'd be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

James

Im so happy and excited to share with everyone how my mac is now working faster than ever. It took weeks of figuring it out. Make sure you have the basics checked off FIRST such as not having too much storage used up, not having too many automatic startup applications, etc.

Now, I must start by saying this may not be the case for you, but the problem was hidden in an Adobe download.

There’s a virus hidden there that caused my iMac to be so ridiculously slow. I deleted everything Adobe related and my computer is back to lightning speed. You can always redownload Adobe if this didn’t help.
