monitor brightness changes after restart with High Sierra 10.13.4

High Sierra version 10.13.4 does not retain monitor brightness after a restart. This is critical for photography. Has anyone been confronted with this issue and can it be fixed?

10.13.6 finally fixes this issue! Or rather, the firmware update that's bundled with the software update fixes the issue. I guess they did not have time to finalize the new boot rom for iMac pro before 10.13.5 rolled out. Take a look at your Boot Rom version. It's now 15.16.6059.0.0,0.

By the way, I just ran the delta update, not the combo update, which is not out yet.

Wanted to update everyone regarding Apple's response to this issue. I was informed at the end of last week that engineering was able to duplicate the issue on their end. They finally realized based on numerous complaints that this a problem that was caused with their last update. They said that the problem will probably be resolved with the next major update. I asked them to contact me immediately when it has been resolved.

I concur with the "not surprising" part, but not because of the update's focus on security fixes. Apple has known about this issue -- which clearly disrupts workflows of many iMac Pro owners -- for at least 2 months now. The fact that they did not deem the issue to be important enough to include a fix in 10.13.5 is egregious, but, I agree, not surprising.

Thank you Eau for your response. I didn't fully explain my issue with my initial post. The monitor is calibrated with x-rite software and equipment. It has been since the beginning. The problem is with the brightness control. Everything was working just fine until I did the latest update of the OS and the problem then started. I have done everything possible to correct the issue including a reinstall of the OS and that has not resolved the issue. Apple support has tried to assist and they are also confused.

Eau, thanks again for the advice. Removing the system preference file did not do the trick. I received another call from support today, just to tell me that the engineers are now looking into this. I hope they are getting plenty of complaints so they can prioritize in resolving this issue. I am starting to reconsider the option of applying updates when they come out. Since High Sierra came out, I have been having issues with the software. As an example, taking a screen shot or downloading a simple pdf takes really long to appear on the my desktop. These are minor issues, but non the less they are annoying, especially when you are limited in time.

Thanks. Keep us posted. I think they broke something in the Apple.Backlight.kext or Apple.BacklightExpert.kext. or both. But who knows... I fear we will probably have to live with this until the next High Sierra update (or maybe supplemental update.) Frankly it's perplexing that after so many betas, the final release breaks Apple's flagship product.

I wanted to reply and let everyone know that I worked with Apple this past Friday. No solution was provided. Several plist files were deleted, but that didn't help. I had to send an actual video of the problem occurring after a restart. Guess they didn't believe my assessment of the problem. This is now back to engineering. Lets see what they attempt next.

Hi Gene,

Thank you for pointing it out to me regarding the Auto Brightness Adjustment. I didn't realize it was checked. You are absolutely right, the problem hasn't gone away. I just called Apple and left a message. Hopefully the person assign to my case will inform engineering. Stay tune for further developments. In regards to your question, the clean install took me to version 10.13.4 and I did not have to update the software on my system.
