iPhone proximity sensor problems

Proximity sensor should ideally work when we answer phones.. when we pick up the phone and talk, the screen would sleep.

However, after updating to ios 11.3, irrespecive of whether i get a phone or not, proximity sensor is ON always. When i am using an app, if i just hover my hand over proximity sensor, the screen blacks out. Anyone facing this issue???

The reboot is the only thing really mentioned here; but it has NOT resolved the issue on my iPhone 7Plus. The screen blacks out when you cover over the proxmity sensor and the voice message that you started to play stops playing. I've upgraded, rebooted (cold boot) and the same thing happens. My phone is on Verizon. The only way I can listen to voice messages is turning the speaker phone on. My commute associates don't like me doing that.

5S, same problem after desperate iOS update hoping for fix of ringtone/message tone silenced during day at work in another city. New problem. Accidentally updated later again and acquired the hypersensitive proximity detector problem (about 1.5”/38 mm).

Updated to 12 hoping for fix and prox.sens. prob is gone, but silent tones problem still present and now speaker phone repeatedly turns on for incoming calls, sometimes ignoring touch screen command to turn it off.

2 cans & a string or Android phone might be a solution. I want my phone to work without software repeatedly ‘breaking’ it with new things I don’t want or can’t disable.

Maybe I got old all of a sudden...but I’m not senile...I can make that can or Android choice. Verizon & Apple are ‘unaware’ of such problems according to Verizon rep on phone last night.

Hey, there’s always snail-mail, right?
