Music skipping on iPhone

The title says it all, really.

Since I've updated my iPhone to iOS 11.3, audio intermittently skips.

It does this with both the native music player and Spotify. Never had it before to this degree, but it's doing it quite frequently now (once every 15-ish minutes or so). Audio files haven't changed and the music appears to play normally in iTunes on my Mac. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Although there is a chance it is simply a bug only you are having, I have an idea to why this is happening.

1. Are you listening to music through headphones? If so, try another pair of headphones or play the audio through your iPhone’s speaker and see if the problem persists. I have had this problem before with a pair of headphones and it turned out it was the headphones having a faulty remote/mic control.

2. If number 1 didn’t help, make sure you are running the latest public release iOS version (iOS 11.4.1). You can check by heading to Settings > General > Software Update

3. If that didn’t help, I would suggest erasing your phone to factory settings and setting up again. Remember to make an iCloud or iTunes backup first. Details on how to do this can be found here:

Step 1: Backup - How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Step 2: Erase - How to erase your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

4. As a last resort if all 3 suggested steps didn’t help, the best thing to do would to get on the phone with Apple and schedule a Genius Bar appointment. There is a chance there could be a hardware fault with the device which they would need to repair, or replace your device.

Hope this helps.

has anyone been able to get this problem rectified via Genius Bar yet? Apple's chat support is absolutely useless, they are barely a notch above outsourced Dell tech support in India. This issue is becoming increasingly frustrating... literally all audio output is FUBAR. Can't make calls reliably, can't listen to podcasts or music. The level of QC and testing Apple does with each subsequent iOS release is shoddier and shoddier... but thanks for those emojis Tim!

Did you mean you've had NO issues with skips since doing the restore? When I restored, I got about 2 days of clean audio before it returned.

If you have success, would you share exactly what steps did you did? e.g. Full ERASE from inside the iPhone? Just RESTORE from iTunes?

I did a RESTORE from iTunes and then did a restore from backup. Two different separate steps.

I am having this problem too and it is driving me INSANE. It happens with the podcast app and spotify, basically any audio. I thought it was maybe interference or a bad wifi connection, but it also happens with music i have stored on my phone in itunes. i heavily rely on podcasts and music during my work days, and i have been suffering through this for 3 weeks now.

As I mentioned before, I did a full restore from iTunes to 11.3.1 on Monday, April 30. Everything went fine until this morning when I had two more instances of the skipping issue.

I'll say that in all cases it seems to happen within about 30 seconds of locking phone. Listening to podcast with no issues, unlock phone to look at something, lock phone, within about 30 seconds there's skipping. Not ever time, clearly, but there seems to be some correlation there.

This is a totally crazy situation.

The idea that a customer would have to spend 3+ hours of their time, re-downloading all their apps, music, and podcasts, to maybe fix a problem affecting one of the core function of a smart phone.

This crippling problem was caused by a normal update. It would be more infuriating if it wasn't so hilariously incompetent.

Update - 22/06/18

Having done a full reset and resynch'd all the podcasts, I appeared to have overcome the skipping issues.

But, several weeks on (and after another Apple update), they are back. What is more, podcasts routinely stop 3" from the end of each episode, meaning I have to press play again several times before replay continues and it moves to the next podcast; infuriating and not always practicable if driving, etc.

It beggars belief that these audio playback issues have not been addressed, indeed have deteriorated further over recent weeks.

Apple, I don't want much - a phone that does email, calls, a bit of online surfing and audio playback of music and podcasts. Stop adding no-value add-ons and fix the BASICS that every phone user expects, or lose us forever.

This issue started happening to me a few days ago.

I am using iPhone SE 11.4, the latest available update I believe.

But to be clear, the issue was occurring both before and after I updated to the latest software.

It was in the native music player I first noticed. I thought maybe some of the music I transferred from iTunes had a bug or something! But then, I tried Spotify and noticed it was happening while playing music on this app too.

What is so infuriating is that it seems like music playback is working totally fine - then, I lock the iPhone and put it in my pocket, and begin walking/going about my business, and then the start/stopping begins happening. As well as this, Siri is appearing on and off though I haven't requested her!

Currently disappointed and disgusted with Apple. (Have been an iPod user for years - but this is my first iPhone)

Have an upcoming trip this weekend and not looking forward to being unable to enjoy music while travelling. 😟

In an attempt to keep this topic relevant, I am having this issue as well.

Audio skips/pauses after 30 seconds of starting Apple Music or Podcasts over my bluetooth headphones. The problem can be worse in with CarPlay. Using a Apple connection, the same skip/pause happens, but if I am trying to use another app, like Maps or sending a text the audio will sometimes completely degrade, and start crackling, like static. Unplugging my phone from my car and waiting 5 seconds before plugging it back in usually fixes the crackling issues, ** the audio will then skip again.
