Problems with voice during CarPlay calls since iOS 11.3

Hey everybody,

since the iOS 11.3 update, I've got problems with calls in my Seat Car. When people call me and my iPhone 7 is connected via CarPlay with my car, people hear my voice distorted/ blurred which makes it hard or impossible for them to understand mr. If my phone is connected via bluetooth, the call will work perfectly and my voice is just fine.

Does anybody have the same problem oder encountered anything similar? I would really appreciate any kind of feedback!

Thanks 🙂

Greetings, XWB!
Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having an issue with your voice to be distorted with the connection from your iPhone to your vehicle through CarPlay and I’m happy to help! I recommend taking a look at this article with steps to Set up CarPlay with your iPhone. Specifically:

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Let me know the results and have a great day!

I have swapped phones with my daughter who never upgraded the IOS. Works great 11.2 useless for calling on 11.3. Remember there tech support is level 1 and they go a step resolution so the ticket gets resolved and out of there que. This needs level 3+ support if not Apple engineering. If Kenwood cannot get any help the rest of us sure wont. Quick question, has anyone tried calls from 3G turning LTE off? just curious thought about that today. Have not had time to test at home.

Honestly i got bored of getting the same reply every time there is an issue with the iphone. Restart you phone, change the cable etc. We are not that stupid. It is about time Apple provides solution to our problems. I spend 850 euros for an apple car play car stereo and after 11.3 update it does not work as it should be. Maybe iir is the last time i buy an iphone

Here the same issue and i almost trie everything.

From different cable to different car nothing solves the problem. Different phone with iOS 11.2 was the only solution that worked but the rollback period for iOs is closed so that can’t solve my problem anymore. For tomorrow i have a supportcall planned with apple so I curious what they are going to say.

First off, I will refuse to buy any Apple Products until this is resolved. In the midst of this, I contacted Apple Support and talked to them for an hour and a half. After going through the predictable motions, we went through a lot of diagnostics on my phone and had to send them analytics and code that were extracted through Itunes. They say they will call again this week. We'll see.

11.3 did this in the update:

Telephony

Available for: iPhone 5s and later, and WiFi + Cellular models of iPad Air and later

Impact: A remote attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code

Description: Multiple buffer overflows were addressed with improved input validation.

CVE-2018-4148: Nico Golde of Comsecuris UG

Curious what this is? Sounds like a buffer overflow issue when the person hears you on the other end.

To all the people who want to switch to Android.

I switched to ios because Sony managed to completely destroy the Android Auto feature with an software upgrade. Although the bug was already known and solved by Google for half a year. Here at ios only the phone is not really usable, but at least the rest (podcasts, navigation, music) is still working correctly.

Connecting the smartphone to the car always causes pain. And you can only decide how much you want ...

Same issue here....iPhone 8 and Kenwood DMX7017DABS.

Works fine via bluetooth but not via CarPlay. Oddly it's not to every number. Just certain landline and mobiles. Very strange.

Took car into garage to check all leads etc and they say they are having similar issues with other users.

Onto Apple Support via Twitter and I've sent them the link to this thread.

Well thanks for posting this I was about to get an Iphone 8+ but if it is happening with it as well I guess I will wait for a fix and use my back up Android that works, I was on the phone with Apple support yesterday and they basically want to put a hold on my credit card to test my phone but I am out of warranty and not at liberty to do this, with all these complaints and the need to be safe while driving you'd think they'd add a little more effort to this and quit shoving iTunes Music down our throats

I have the same issue as everyone else except I'm running on iOS 8.4 on a 5s. When connected to CarPlay (Kenwood 573s headunit) I can hear the caller ok but my voice to them is incoherent. If I disconnect the lightning cable from the phone during the call, the phone switches over to bluetooth and everything is fine.

I've tried different cables and also networks (LTE and 3G). In CarPlay mode it's a no go 9/10 times. Strangely, sometimes it did work but I can not find any visible pattern. After reading all the comments I have noticed most are Kenwood users but not all.

I'm stumped.

Bad news spoke too soon. Upgraded to OS 11.4 Beta 3 (15F5061d) and guess what? Problem is still there. I confess I was afraid of that because some people have said that the trouble varies dependind on the number you are calling and I have experienced ut working after a reboot and then going to pieces again. Just enough wonkiness to think that whoever tried the beta with success might have just experienced a false positive. Oh well.

Hey Everybody,

In my case, sadly, iOS 11.4 Beta 3 doesn't fix the issue with the phone calls in my Seat Leon.

I'm also happy to hear that for some people iOS 11.4 was the solution so the problem is getting closer to resolving.

Good news, yesterday I had a good experience with Apple Support where they confirmed that its an issue they already know about. Unfortunately, they don't know yet what the exact cause is as the problem can manifest in multiple ways. They asked me to test calling with different phone settings and sim cards to rule everything out. After completing the tests and ruling everything out, I was asked to run a diagnostics on the Apple Carplay system while calling. Following that, I had to run diagnostics on my phone and return the files to Apple.

I now have a permanent contact from support and he will call me back in four days regardless if there are any updates/news as he said he depends on the information he receives from the software engineers.
