Problems with voice during CarPlay calls since iOS 11.3

Hey everybody,

since the iOS 11.3 update, I've got problems with calls in my Seat Car. When people call me and my iPhone 7 is connected via CarPlay with my car, people hear my voice distorted/ blurred which makes it hard or impossible for them to understand mr. If my phone is connected via bluetooth, the call will work perfectly and my voice is just fine.

Does anybody have the same problem oder encountered anything similar? I would really appreciate any kind of feedback!

Thanks 🙂

iPhone 7, iOS 11.3, CarPlay

Greetings, XWB!
Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having an issue with your voice to be distorted with the connection from your iPhone to your vehicle through CarPlay and I’m happy to help! I recommend taking a look at this article with steps to Set up CarPlay with your iPhone. Specifically:

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Let me know the results and have a great day!

Same problem over here with iPhone 7 (iOS 11.3) and Škoda Octavia 3 (2016). The communication partner can‘t understand me but I can understand her / him quite well.

If I make the call I disconnect from Carplay and use the Bluetooth connection at the moment. I don’t know if this process is quick enough for incoming calls yet. Very annoying!

I hope Apple is

working on a solution for this issue by now.

Hello all,

Same issue I noticed about a couple weeks ago. I have a Kenwood DDX9904S, Bluetooth works fine all apps work fine except for phone calls. When talking people complain that they cannot understand me or it sounds like alien talk. I have tried new iPhone lightning cable, resetting and different iPhone same IOS 11.3 and about everything else I can think of. This is a problem. To talk while in carplay you have to disconnect the lightning cable then Bluetooth kicks in and you can talk fine.

UPDATE: I just did a firmware update to my head unit. No good still does not work. Went back to where I had this unit installed they tested with a iPhone 8 same issue. They did say they have had some complaints. I have emailed Kenwood about this and waiting for a reply. Also did the 11.3.1 software upgrade to iPhone 6s and no good. Apple is responsible for all of this. I am ready for an upgrade and thinking about getting an Android. This is not acceptable at all.

I have exactly the same problem on my Iphone 6S since i upgraded to IOS11.3 . I can make and receive voice calls via bluetooth perfectly. But when connected to USB my carplay plays my voice distorted. I have tried all the fixes. Its definately the new version IOS problem. I tested other iphones on older version IOS and these work 100%. Come on Apple get your act together.

Have a SEAT LEON FR 2017 and an iPhone6s and have the same problem since 11.3.

Updated to 11.3.1 and still the same issue.

My wife's iPhone still on 11.2.x has no issue on the same car with the same cable.

Please correct this issue asap as it make CarPlay unusable (need to connect via Bluetooth only) and creates a potentially dangerous situation as now needing to touch the phone while driving.

I have the same issue and I’m on IOS 11.3.1with an Anker lightning cable and Kenwood head unit.

Maps & Spotify are great via Carplay. Voice calls are great via bluetooth but as soon as I try a voice call via carplay it is distorted and unintelligible.

I have tried all the usual i.e. turn on Siri, turn phone off/on, tried different lightning cables, update IOS etc.

problem persists - come on Apple what are you doing? This is a fundamental feature of carplay!

Same here on VW Golf with Discover Media 2017, on different iPhones (SE, 6S, 7) after updating them to iOS 11.3.

Older Discover Media infotainment in my wife’s VW Touran works fine. Looks like iOS 11.3 broke CarPlay audio call quality on several but not all infotainment systems.

Come on Apple, fix it quickly!

I am having the same problem as everyone else. This started the minute after upgrading to 11.3. I even tried the new upgrade to 11.3.1 with no fix.

I contacted Kenwood support to see if they knew anything and this is their response:

There is a problem we are seeing since the 11.3 update . Waiting for apple to fix and do update .

Use bluetooth till update is posted .

Thanks Rory

Same issue here. Ever since upgrading to 11.3 and now 11.3.1, CarPlay on both my Tiguan and GTI doesn’t work anymore. Calls are distorted. Other people can’t hear me. For sure it’s a Apple issue because I used a friend’s phone on 11.2.6 and the reception is all clear. Calls over Bluetooth works fine. So I don’t even bother with CarPlay anymore and just use Bluetooth. Hope there’s a fix from Apple soon.
