Garageband not seeing Midi inputs

I have Garageband 10.2. I have an older Roland D-50 keyboard using midi to usb. When I connect it to the MacPro, a message comes up saying a new midi input is recognized. When I go to Audio Midi Controller, the D-50 is recognized. But there seems to be no opportunity to select the midi as the input to record. When i press keys on the keyboard there is no sound detected or recorded on the track. Am I missing something or is there a problem with High Sierra? TIA,

there is nothing to select, that is for Audio input devices only.


at the bottom you can see that GB has detected your MIDI device:

that's a bit more difficult to guess.


since GB shows the device as detected, it doesn't appear to be a compatibility issue


only two possibilities come to mind:


1: your MIDI to USB connection is backward, if you're using an interface (IN to OUT, OUT to IN [though GB does not support MIDI-OUT])


2: be sure a software track is selected
