iTunes stuck on "Reading photos from Pictures"

Running latest iTunes (12.7.4) on a Windows 10 PC.

Trying to sync iPhone X (on iOS 11.3).

For some reason it just started hanging during sync stage 4 *reading photos from pictures".

Library has ~ 16,000 pictures and videos.

Was working fine previously.

Anyone else have this issue, or a solution?

Much thanks!

I was one of the first posters on this thread, and I am very happy to report that, after updating my IOS (IPhone 8) to 11.4 today, and updating ITunes to version 12.7.5.9 (released today), syncing my 4800 photos locally (not ICloud) through ITunes took just over 5 SECONDS. I have synced three times, just to verify, and subsequent syncs were essentially instantaneous.

I made NO other changes to my Windows 10 system, except to install these two updates from Apple. I am going to pronounce the issue resolved, at least for me.

Looks like Apple was listening after all. I just wish the tech support people knew more about what was going on in development. My experience with Apple Customer support throughout this process was essentially useless, right up to them replacing my PHONE for what was ultimately what we all knew.....a software bug in either IOS or ITunes.

Actually... this is NOT a fix... it seemed to work. But nothing synced. Also now all my "albums" from the PC are now gone! This is really not good. Pictures that transferred to phone are now all over the place in the iPhone.

Also spent an hour working with support on this. First they claimed to not know about it... then oh... development knows about this and are working on a fix. I asked if they need logs to show what is happening... No, we don't. Not hopeful here!!!

I have this problem too and its doing my head in. I hate iTunes with a passion, its Apples biggest let down and its why most people turn to Spotify. The only time i use iTunes is to sync photos and now they’ve screwed that up too without even a fix in over a month. I dread updating Apple software, it causes more problems than a fix. If it aint broke dont fix it.

This is becoming very, very annoying. I have spent hours and hours either on the phone to the Apple support people or online trying to sort this mess out myself. Apple just don't appear to want to know. The attitude of their staff in my local Apple shop was one of "go away". They just wouldn't admit there is a problem.

I'm in the UK . We have "Trading Standards" people who might be interested. After all, we have been sold a product that doesn't work.

Why no mention in the press? Surely they must use Ipads and Iphones?

Come on Apple, please act like a responsible company.

I have been told numerous times there is not a problem and they haven't come across it before, others tell me its a Windows problem because it works fine on a Mac, and I have also been told to use iCloud as that is designed for photos. Its like perpetually banging your head against the proverbial brick wall. I have contacted the BBC and sent the links to this forum and also to iPod and iPhone User Magazine but have no idea if they are going to pursue it.

Hello all ... I’m getting nowhere either. I still can’t believe that this has been going on since the beginning of April.

I’ve always been a fan of the iPad since it’s introduction... now on my third. ...I’m not too sure if I’ll still be loyal after this fiasco. I, like everyone else, paid good money for this product.

My Apple advisor has assured me that it is being worked on but has absolutely no idea when they will have a fix... if at all.

Fingers crossed it’ll be soon.

Ian, after 6 hours reading only 200 pictures from the iPhone camera roll I gave up. It should not take that long. I had already tried deleting the cache, then starting a fresh synch. I selected only 4 folders from my computer and iTunes synched only 2 folders, then stopped. If I retry the synch, it gets stuck again on reading the pictures. It was never like this before, and I have been synching my 9,000 pictures effortlessly for months. Something did change.

Thanks for this information. This should help Apple understand that there's more to this than simply extremely slow operations.

I understand that this is an Apple user forum that does not necessarily benefit from Apple contributions. However, I'm sure Apple have not ignored this thread. The more user cases that can be ACCURATELY documented, the more there exists the possibility that this issue can be resolved.

Thanks to ftagin and others who have tried to provide forensically useful information to help resolve this issue. For others who have contributed "this does not work" without providing detailed contextual data, please try to help this community with detailed information that might help the rest of us.

Cheers

Ian

Can you keep photos in folders in Android? If so I will switch to Android. When Apple removed support for Apps from iTunes they just vanished and Apple kept silent, is this the end of Photos on iTunes?? There were rumours that iTunes was going completely sometime in 2019.

Unfortunately Apple products don't work as seamlessly as they used to, in my opinion they have totally abandoned Steve Job's mantra of KISS and now have too many products which are no longer perfect. They know they can ignore their customer base as most will still stay and are so entrapped in the expensive Apple eco-system that they cannot afford to change and buy new phone, watch, tablet, laptop and various apps, ebooks, music, subscriptions etc.

Same here! Another issue I've discussed with senior advisers is that there is no option to organize photos by anything but date. I'm a graphic designer so I sync all of my photos into designated folders when synced, but still have to scroll through a ton to find a specific image.

iCloud is useless for this and I had to rely on a 3rd-party app, but a while ago the updates changed so the app was no longer working with iTunes. You'd think that a very basic thing like photo organization when syncing would be available, right?
