iTunes stuck on "Reading photos from Pictures"

Running latest iTunes (12.7.4) on a Windows 10 PC.

Trying to sync iPhone X (on iOS 11.3).

For some reason it just started hanging during sync stage 4 *reading photos from pictures".

Library has ~ 16,000 pictures and videos.

Was working fine previously.

Anyone else have this issue, or a solution?

Much thanks!

I was one of the first posters on this thread, and I am very happy to report that, after updating my IOS (IPhone 8) to 11.4 today, and updating ITunes to version 12.7.5.9 (released today), syncing my 4800 photos locally (not ICloud) through ITunes took just over 5 SECONDS. I have synced three times, just to verify, and subsequent syncs were essentially instantaneous.

I made NO other changes to my Windows 10 system, except to install these two updates from Apple. I am going to pronounce the issue resolved, at least for me.

Looks like Apple was listening after all. I just wish the tech support people knew more about what was going on in development. My experience with Apple Customer support throughout this process was essentially useless, right up to them replacing my PHONE for what was ultimately what we all knew.....a software bug in either IOS or ITunes.

I have read all the suggestions and I really appreciate all the time everyone has taken to find workarounds and write down the steps. But seriously, folks, should we have to work this hard? Come on, Apple. Just fix the bug! Ever since the Windows update that broke iTunes, I have been unable to update my photo albums or add movies to watch on the train -- and at this point I am seriously considering quitting the Apple ecosystem and getting a better-supported set of devices.

I have been told by an Apple "guru" that there are corrupted photos that aren't allowing sync to finish. I don't believe this because it has worked for years before and I've never had an issue with syncing. I think it's an update issue. My phone is only 4 months old and it has the latest update as well. If anyone has a solution please let me know as I am ready to throw my phone across the room!

Updated iTunes tonight but I still can't sync my pictures to my iPad Pro.

This is absolutely disgraceful and completely unacceptable.

Apple force us to use iTunes to add media to our devices from a PC but continually break the function leaving its customers with no way to add media to our devices in a way that we want to.

I do not wish to roll my iTunes back to an earlier version as I'll lose all the changes I made to my Library since the last update. To be honest, I don't see why I should have to.

Perhaps it's time to ditch the iPad and purchase an Android device which will actually allow me to reliably add content to my device when I want and in a way I chose.

You lack of communication about this issue and reactiveness in resolving it is completely unacceptable and appauling Apple.

For those of you having fits with this bug from ITunes 12.7.4, be very careful when going back to 12.3.76. There's a bug in THAT version that breaks all favicons in Internet Explorer 11, EVEN IF you check the box in ITunes to REPLACE Favorites in the IPhone. Why, when you are copying FROM the computer, TO the phone, all of the favicons in Internet Explorer would be overwritten and replaced with generic icons, is beyond my comprehension. The only fix for this is to have exported your favions/favorites to an html file from within IE, then after ITunes ruins everything, go to the Favorites folder, delete all content in the subfolders, then import the favorites back into IE from your html saved file. This will happen every time you sync with ITunes, so get ready. Oh, and guess what: If you sync your Safari favorites with ICloud, the local PC is fine, along with the favicons, but Safari doesn't have any favicons.

And before everyone tells me that I should be using Edge, the EXACT same thing occurs with that browser as well. Even if you import Favorites from IE11, there are no favicons in Edge at all.

I guess we'll be told that we shouldn't "need" favicons next. And if you don't know what a favicon is, you don't care about what I have just said here. 😉

ITunes has become a complete mess over the past 6 months.

I have heard that photo sync has been removed from iTunes for Windows and sync has to be done via iCloud for Windows just as app support was quietly dropped from iTunes. iCloud will take over everything in 2019 and iTunes will be dropped. Not sure how true this is though but had it from couple of sources and apparently Apple won't confirm or deny, store employee said wait for WMDC

I've had enough and have ditched my iPad for a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 (Android).

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 is on a par with my old iPad Pro but at much less the cost. Android and an expandable memory enables me to copy my media in whichever way I choose in a fraction of the time it took using iTunes (and FAR more reliably).

This situation with iTunes is wholly unacceptable and Apple don't seem to give a Monkeys. If you can part with your iPad then vote with your feet and ditch your Apple products.

Perhaps then Apple might listen and fix this problem which has already been ignored and left for an unacceptable amount of time.. I wouldn't hold your breath though..

I am sorely tempted, only thing that held me back before was that I have watch, ear pods and phone, I am incredibly disappointed with my iPhone X though, feel well ripped off, only product I have bought on pre-order and big big mistake, screen goes dark and unreadable in bright sunlight, and is too small for my eyesight, going from 7 Plus down to this when I misunderstood that screen would be bigger was massive let-down. I do like the look of Samsung products and now Android is mature and storage expandable on Android phones Apple's rigid, closed eco-system and expensive cloud storage is a real turn-off

I am with you. Simply deleting the folder then “it works”, is not happening for me. Apple lied about the battery fiasco why not now make us all use iCloud with another lie. I have lived with iPhones for the past ten years. No more, Apple hide behind their loyal customers to answer their problems with second rate iTunes software and no support. Good bye Apple, hello Samsung for me.

I actually bought a Samsung and paid £50 for a llarge memory card, only to find all my 15000 photos I like to have on my photo didn’t stay in the albums once the memory card was inserted in the phone. Alll just a big massive jumble the same with music and the only way to get my music across in the playlists was to use the phone memory so I returned the phone as Samsung don’t go a big enough memory for me. Also I like to download of Netflix etc and again you can’t do this in a memory card. So I went with the iPhone X don’t like it it’s crap, most tv apps use about two thirds of the screen I wished I’d got the 8 plus now. At a Loss what to do next as apple are not good they don’t listen to what we want and just push on with their own marketing agenda. Things like not being able to use any headphones drives me mad!
