Hello John,
Where did you take it to ? apple store? I am having the same issue..

[Problem Solved]
Dear all!
If you are having the same problem as disscussed above, please find a professional iPhone repair store and ask them to check the audio IC, it’s a tiny little chip on the mother board.
I got my iPhone 7 Plus audio IC replaced today for ¥400 (around US$60), and the problem is solved! All phone functions back to normal, phone calls normal, voice memo working, etc.
Tips: If your phone is still under warranty, please search help from Apple Store. If not, get the audio IC checked, and most likely it will work for you as well.
Again, this is not a software problem, it’s the hardware issue, another new update won’t fix it!
Hello John,

How did you fix this? This happened to me barely last monday. It drives me crazy I dont know what to do. Nothing I read online helps. I noticed it happened after I upgraded my phone to ios 11.4
Same issue , whats happning to appme updates ?? Speaker icon grayed out can hear noting on a call
See when I went to the store last week they told me apple stopped fixing this problem 2 weeks ago. Sounds like apple is giving us all the run around.
Updating to iOS12 Beta now, will post if it fixes the problem. I have Applecare and made an appointment if it doesn’t.
How do you update your phone to go back without losing importnat info on your phone?
There doesn't seem to be any consistency in how Apple remedies the issue either, some people get new phones, some don't, $360 for just a repair is ridiculous.
to day mi iPhone 7plus have the same issue, I install the last version and the problem continuous speaker icon greyed out no hearing anything
Same issue with 11.4.1! Annoying!
I am concerned the same thing is about to happen with me. My phone is about to be paid off and now this. It's happened the last 3 phones!
Seems like this is a widespread issue and absolutely disappointed to see Apple not doing anything about this. My phone is not even 2 years old. Still paying it off!
any way to figure it out?
Kai
You were very fortunate as in our situation they did not resolve. They said they could give us a replacement phone for $350. Very dis
Just loaded ios12 beta10 and that’s not cured it. Thinking it’s the audio chip...... ;-(
This does not work. How was it a known issue before and people were getting phones replaced, but now customer service is now saying it’s not a known issue? Response requested.
