I recently had the same issue. I went to the Apple Store in Leawood, KS and they replaced my iPhone free of charge!!! I had the moisture sensor show “water damage.” When I explained to them that I bought my iPhone 7 in Thailand and had been residing there the last two years, they were understanding based on the humidity there (just look it up for a tropic environment)! Now, I’ll wait and see if there are any other issues, but I went from using an unusable iPhone that became a brick ro having everything restored! Don’t forget to do a backup on iTunes before!!!
[Problem Solved]
Dear all!
If you are having the same problem as disscussed above, please find a professional iPhone repair store and ask them to check the audio IC, it’s a tiny little chip on the mother board.
I got my iPhone 7 Plus audio IC replaced today for ¥400 (around US$60), and the problem is solved! All phone functions back to normal, phone calls normal, voice memo working, etc.
Tips: If your phone is still under warranty, please search help from Apple Store. If not, get the audio IC checked, and most likely it will work for you as well.
Again, this is not a software problem, it’s the hardware issue, another new update won’t fix it!
Hi there! I had the exact same problem. I went to my local Apple store and they ran diagnostics and replaced it with a brand new iPhone 7 for me. I was very happy that they honored the fact that it was their faulty hardware which would not work after iOS 11.4.
Apple just replaced my phone free for this issue, even though it was out of warranty. Take your phone to the nearest apple store for repl
Having the same issue. Did everything including complete factory restore. Nothing helped. Took it to apple today and the guy at the store said he had never heard of this issue and after conducting some diagnostics he said it is a hardware issue with my phone. Not even 2 years old and still paying it off. Ugh...
Pay attention to the call's connection. I have had this issue and Apple fixed it under the "NO SERVICE" repair. When the audio was gone and I was making a call, the call would connect BUT would not indicate it on the phone. Of course no one could hear me and I could not hear them. Working good now. Props to Apple for supporting a phone that was well outside the warranty. Samsung would not do this even if it was 1 month outside the "window", hence why I moved to Apple.
I would like to update everyone on my situation.
After chatting with Apple support, I was setup with an appointment to the Genius Bar. When it was my turn to be seen, I was pretty surprised by what the rep would tell me. I was told that it was a known issue that the software update actually triggers something in the phone so the hardware fails. Keep in mind that I did my research before hand, but during my visit I did not mention anything to the rep that was assisting me. After being told this information, the best "solution" that was offered to me was a replacement phone for around $300-$400. I walked out without taking the "solution" and actually called Apple support and managed to get in contact with a senior support rep. They managed to get me a free replacement so now all is well.
Even though my situation was fixed, I found it pretty appalling that Apple actually knows about this issue yet still refuses to offer free replacements in wake of this information.
i can confirm it is a microphone hardware issue. I got my iphone replaced today in the apple store at no extra charge (bought 1.5 years ago)
Apple replaced my phone. It’s a hardware issue with certain phones

Try resetting it(soft reset, not factory) multiple times. If this doesn't work, go to the Apple Store.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I see that you have not received an answer to your question. If you are able to provide additional information, then perhaps someone will be able to assist you. Some questions that might be helpful to answer are:
1. Is the audio option grayed out when calling different contacts?
2. Does this occur only when the iPhone is paired to a Bluetooth device, or when not paired to a Bluetooth device as well?
3. Could you tell us of any troubleshooting steps you may have tried?
Take care!

I recently experienced this issue as well. It started out that I couldn't hear my callers, and my callers couldn't hear me and then I lost all functionality to make/accept calls and my callers were expressing that my phone was going straight to voicemail.
I followed the steps in this article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204027
I turned airplane mode on/off and that solved the issue of not being able to make/accept calls, but I was still unable to hear my callers and vice versa. I tried most of the steps outlined in this article, but the step that worked for me was resetting my network settings.
I hope this helps!
I have been having the same issue. Phone calls through the phone and headphones hard wired in do not have any sound. Speaker selection is greyed out. I am on the AT&T network with iPhone 7plus 128gb.
i have reset network settings, erased phone with reset to factory settings. I have spoken with Apple Support whom recommended visiting a store to have an Apple genius look at the phone.
removing the SIM card helped. I can at least hear now after the SIM card.
this is very frustrating and not a hardware issue to warrant a visit to a store!
