iPod Classic won't verify

I've had a problem getting my iPod Classic to verify with iTunes. This just started which leads me to believe the current version of iTunes is the problem. I have the iPod Classic, 6th Generation, 120 GB. It plays just fine otherwise but now I can't connect it to make any changes or additions. It just freezes up iTunes and won't verify at all. The iPod screen just shows the revolving circle with the two arrows and won't go beyond that. Anyone else have this problem? Is it the current version of iTunes? I've looked up this issue on many sites and many solutions involve resetting the iPod back to factory settings which I absolutely will not do. I've had it for 10 years and I'm not deleting everything I've put on it in that time. It's not full, it says I've only used 37.2 GB and have 74.3 GB of space left. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use this thing quite a lot and I really need it to work with iTunes properly. Thank you to anyone who can help with this problem.

Well I've discovered that it IS the newest version of iTunes that's the culprit. I hope this won't be an issue going forward or I won't be able to update it anymore. I installed version 12.1.3.6 on my laptop and it connected just fine. I hope this isn't Apple's way of forcing people to upgrade to newer iPods because I paid $248 for this 120 GB Classic and I'm not paying twice that for less than half the space with other software already installed, taking up even more space. I certainly hope this will be fixed in later versions, if it's a glitch at all.

Regarding computer operating systems and iTunes ...

iTunes for Macs requires OS X v10.9.5 Mavericks or later and the latest version of iTunes > Get the latest version of iTunes - Apple Support

iTunes for Windows requires a PC running Windows 7 or later and the latest version of iTunes > iTunes - Download iTunes Now - Apple

Yeah, I've had the same problem. Came out of the blue. I have 2 classics, one 4 yrs old the other fairly new. Both sync the same music library. The older one causes iTunes to freeze on connect, the new one syncs fine. I'll try older version.

Syncing has always been troublesome. Most of the time iTunes doesn't recognize older iPod. I have to plug/unplug rapidly till iTunes sees it. This routine sometimes results in iPod freezing but never iTunes. As one who uses my iPod a ton, and hope to do so for a long time, I'm afraid us iPodders are being abandoned.
